CHFF: Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

Since Brady, the team is 3-5 in the "win it all" category, and they haven't won since 2004. Taking the field is the smart play, as it usually is when you bet football.
Taking the field in any betting venture is always the smart play, but that's not what I was suggesting. My point was that, in my opinion, if you bet against them every time they're in a "win it all" game in the next 6-7 years you'll come up short.

wait..... this year or Next..... Pats are going to be playing great again

Draft DE's..... or RT's or LT's

That would be a terrible idea. Our best bet to see a defense like the old one is to draft some big, fast, physical, and mean linebackers in the mold of a Ted Johnson or a Tedy Bruschi. So far we've done that we Jerod Mayo and we have it in A.D. and Seau. However, Seau can't be expected to play every down and A.D. has underperformed considering his contract. Guyton is good, but he is not in that mold. If we improve our linebacking corps in the offseason, I believe this defense improves dramatically next season.

3-5 since Brady?

But what type of defense do they want to run - a 3-4 or 4-3? Of course you'd want them to run both, but it's been hard enough for BB to settle for LB's that fit his system and can make an impact in a 3-4. At this point, I'd say it would be easier for the Pats to continue to build around a 4-3 type defense and focus on drafting pass rushing DE's. Assuming McKenzie regains his form, he could be a great fit as an OLB in a 4-3.

Regarding AT, I think he's played his last season with the Pats. He flat out hasn't played well in a 4-3 or 3-4 for the Pats. In addition, although Guyton isn't the greatest at setting the edge, he's good in coverage and I like him as the other OLB in a 4-3 defense.

In the end, with a potential uncapped year in 2010, the Pats can very well shore up their pass rush by signing a veteran (Julius Peppers) and draft a couple in the 2010 draft. Assuming the Pats re-sign Wilfork and make a splash in FA, their defense can finally take it to the next level.

BB wants to run a 3-4. That's his bread and butter. IMO, the only reason that he's currently running a 4-3 is because of said linebacker issues.

I, personally, really wanted Larry Foote in this defense. I thought he would have been a good fit everything considered. BB, apparently, thought otherwise.

Not in the shutdown days of Law, Milloy, and Samuel, it wasn't.

Actually it was, it simply didn't break as often. Kerry is just being a pile on prick here to feather his national appeal after years of Brady is better than Manning you idiots tomes. As he pointed out himself, the Rams put up 14 unanswered points in rapid succession in the 4th quarter of that first SB win. Had Brady and someone fans here often refer to nowadays as Vinatraitor not risen to the occasion... 2002 says hey, you guys all forgotten me just 'cause I didn't make the playoffs?? 0-31 to 31-0 start and end to the 2003 season and .500 after 4 games and most were ready to pronounce this team a flash in the superbowl pan. Then of course they played the shutout to shootout SB where the incomparable Jake Delhomme shredded them once Brady got them up by 7 and the last team holding the ball won by a FG... The Philly bowl game would have been closer than it already seemed had McNabb and Reid not puked away close and late as is their history.

2005 really had nothing to do with the D. Turnovers killed that team born in part of 3 in 4 fatigue. What nerve...

Amazing this team can win a game it should have lost (SD thanks to Troy Brown) and lose a game it then should have won (Indy). That's revisionist history. They had a shot for sure but they also had lots of issues on both sides of the ball that get conveniently fotgotten for argument sake.

When this team again goes 5-11 (as opposed to 11-5 with a backup to his HOF HS QB starting 15 games) someone can holla fork 'em and begin to enlighten me on how Belichick has lost his mojo.

Recounting the pats' history in the 4th quarter in big games make two key revelations:

One: BB is a master of game planing, from Monday to Saturday he is the best in creating a defensive game plan that will distrupt opponent offense. Evidences are the leads Pats were able to build at the half and often till the 4th quarter, even against top tier teams.

Two. In game adjustment, epsecially late game adjustment, he is clearly at a disadvantage against top-tier opponents. It could be the factor of lower talent and inexperience on his staff. He maybe valuing loyalty and cohersion over coaching ability and experiences.

When opposition eventually and inevitablly find out the right counter move, we were not able to limit it to a small success, ie yield no more than 2 TDs in 4th qrtr. The failures listed we yielded 17 points, 21 points, and more. And often making no defensive plays in last 10 minutes while pulling all stops.

Now the solutions:

a. Play calling not peak too early. can we not show all hands in first 3 quarters and save something as counter to the counter. save defensive package for end of game series and give them something new in last 5 minutes.

b. Personell not peak too early. Can we save personel for 4th qrtr, ie save say wilfolk and warren and who ever is most effective, for late game. That means more rotation and more subs playing in first 3 qrtr, and smaller lead or no lead into the 4th. But it's worth it, limiting opposition's pattern recognition process; as different personel may use different techniques.

c. Better game management, better in-game counters by pats, Bill may need help here.

d. save offensive plays for end-of game situations (gadge plays) to extend our offense scoring and control of clock

f. better situational awareness, save timeouts for end of game; be willing and ready to take a penalty (on 1st or 2nd down) or run a basis run play; never use a timeout until it's the must-make or last down. Hopefully it never comes to that and we have all 3 time outs in last 2 minutes. This way we can dictate the game and the other team's play selections.
