"Scattered" thoughts...

It's getting to the point when we, as fans, have to wait for Clownboy Pereira to issue his "takes" on Wednesday before we find out what the hell is the real rule and what isn't. Pathetic....all this because Jetdell insists on trying to fix what ain't broke

I am going to agree with the NFL that QBs should not be hit hard, and that these players should be penalized until they figure out a better way of getting the QB down.

They will figure it out in time. They have been trained to hit hard as a form of intimidation, but they will learn a new way now.

I played rugby in college, and most of the players were ex-football guys from high school. First thing we learned is a different tackling technique, but it was really hard to break our instincts. So, we took a tour of Scotland to play teams. All the Scot teams were undersized by comparison, and the game match and we just started nailing them left and right, hitting them harder (they said) than they were hit before. But we were on the ground with guys that had already passed the ball, and before we knew it the ball was on the wings, and they were scoring. They annihilated us.

We came back to the states and really practiced the new tackling techniques so that we wouldn't take ourselves out of the play when we stopped a rugby player (by the way, I think this is the reason rugby guys get by without pads, since it's really difficult to get a clean hit in rugby).

This is a long-winded way of saying that, instead of trying to pound the QB, in the future players will be going for the QBs arms and wrapping him up.

Re: "scattered" thoughts....

Don't know where he was aiming for, and it doesn't really matter IMO. The end result was the crown of his helmet in Henne's chin, and that will and should get called (and fined) every time.

You're not even allowed to hit the QB in the head with your hand, so of course that's going to get called.

This is for all of you that think that Chung hit him in the chin. Do you have that opinion b/c you saw Chung hit him in the chin or b/c the announcer said he hit him in the chin?

We'll call this an interesting study on the effect of media.

I've replayed the play on my DVR and while I admit the angle isn't perfect, it doesn't appear that Chung ever hit any part of Henne's head. Not his chin, nothing. Instead it was a brutal hit to the chest, the force of which caused Henne's head to snap back violently. It was picture perfect form tackle.

I found the Dierdorf's performance today to be horrible. It actually ruined the game. I was going to transfer the game from my dvr to dvd but I don't ever want to hear that announcing crew again. That guy is really bad.

That's gonna be a 25 K fine for Chung. Did you guys see Henne's helmet jerk backwards afterwards--that was nuts! Don't know if the fines are as severe for rookies tho

Seabass did a great job at tackle and Chung had one of the biggest plays on defense with his sack on Henne that pushed the Dolphins out of FG range. Plus A.D. and Mayo did a good job stopping the wildcat as the game went on, the phins only had one real impressive drive running it

Penalty/fine or not, I'd like to see a couple of shots like that on Peyton next week - nothing cheap, but good and hard. Other than keeping him off the field, the key is to be physical and knock him around. He's not the same once his bell has been rung a few times.

My scattered thought is what the hell were the Bears thinking letting McGowan go? Our safeties have gone from James Sanders probably being the best one, to him being #4 on the depth chart, in just a year.

Reading through this thread the most interesting observation I come away with is it's interesting how much the booth commentary effects what fans subsequently assume/believe they saw. I don't have DVR but my initial impression at game speed was that the overall force of the blow to his chest on the hit caused his head to snap back in a whiplash effect and the crown of his helmet never hit anything.

Every week we see players ripped for all manner of indiscretions from poor throws to bad decisions to sheer ineptitude based almost exclusively on off the cuff/spur of the moment observations or evaluations fueled by guys sitting in a booth being paid to sound like they know what they're talking about when in fact they are making an educated guess, at best, at what just transpired and blathering to fill dead air to create the illusion of being knowledgable, at worst.

So. . . I haven't re-watched the hit, but I can't figure out how his head would move BACK if he got hit in the chest. . . wouldn't that require his neck to be more rigid than his chest? Just basic physics/anatomy here. . . ?

Ever been in a fender bender??

whiplash...force to body transfers force to object on a flexible spine...in this case his head...voila...bad whiplash

BTW, I have it on DVR and I've seen it on the net...good hard LEGAL hit....more bullcrap from Mike "The Fixer" Carey

I won't matter if they could fine Meriweather for taunting will he was laying face down they can and will fine Chung for that hit, its getting out of hand.

When a person is standing still and gets his body hit from the front, his head wants to remain where it is as the body moves away from the impact. It gives the appearance of the head moving forward. Most whiplash injuries occur when a person in a car is impacted from the rear causing the head to snap backwards. Many times we have seen a QB hit the ground when tackled from the front and see his head hit the ground with force because when the body comes to rest the head snaps rearward. I don't see how a player that is standing still can receive an impact from a would be tackler in the chest that would cause his head to move backwards if his head is untouched.

thank you. ;-)

spin it any way you want to make your goo gee gaa gaa point...the videotape does NOT lie....if you took the time to view it instead of posting all these little girly protestations that it WAS a head shot, you'd SEE the crown of Chung's helmet did NOT hit his chest, nevermind his head...but don't let that stop another good fairy story by the "graduates of the Joey Porter School For The Insane".

Hijacked thread -- Can someone post a video link of the hit? I swore the initial contact was in the chest.

This is an excellent point.

I don't have DVR and can't find a clip of this anywhere. Nothing on youtube, etc.
