"Scattered" thoughts...

Re: "scattered" thoughts....

You're wrong. Chung was aiming for the chest.

He might have been aiming for his chest but that is not how it played out. Review showed Henne's head snapping back from the top of Chung's helmet hitting the lower front of Henne's facemask. That's a flag every time.

Re: "scattered" thoughts....

When you say "crown" of his helmet, are you referring to the top of his helmet, like in a spear? If you are than you are just wrong. He put his facemask in his CHEST. The top of his helmet NEVER hit Henne. If it has, I wouldn't complain. BUT HE DIDN'T. Not even close. Maybe someone can find a clip on UTube

The top of Chung's helmet hit Henne in the chin. It was pretty clear on the replay.

I thought the dopey announcers totally missed the illegal substitution call on Miami. Looked to me that Brady quick snapped recognizing there was a substitution still trying to get off the field. They chalked it up to complex defensive play calling.

BTW- interesting situation for the Pats at the end. Do you go for it on 4th down and an inch. You are moving the ball on the ground. You only need an inch to end the game, and even if you fail, the offense would have to go 83 yds in a about 80 seconds with NO TO's.

Then again you have to think you can execute a 40 yd FG to win/ice a game. Personally I go for it for all the reason's above, but i'm interested in what others think

I'm a big fan of going for it on 4th down, but in that situation, putting a team down two scores with under a minute and a half to go (and no timeouts) pretty much ends the game as well. 83 yards in 80 seconds is unlikely, I agree, but you never know. I was fine with the kick, though I would have understood if they went for it too. But the penalty made it moot.

4. The announcers were brutal, they didn't know whose ass to kiss first. However they did make some unusal calls. When they show the replay of the last play in the half, it clearly shows that there WAS one second left when the ball hit off Randy's hands. Yet the announcers make it sound like the Pats got away with something. What's up with that?????

I liked Dierdorf saying, "They're going for it! (awkward silence) And why not? It's third down..."

5. The Phins had ONE drive when they ran the ball well. The rest of the time the Pats stuffed a good running teams run pretty well. The Pat White version of the wildcat looked great for the ONE drive, but after that it did NOTHING. Nice job of the Pats staff to make the correct adjustment, and the players to execute it.

The Pats did a pretty good job overall against a very good rushing attack, though during that one drive, we looked totally lost. I wish we would have called a timeout at some point to re-group. I don't know if it would have made a difference, but the defense was reeling for that entire drive.

Do you even read the other posts? Chung aimed for the chest but ended up contacting the facemask. That's poor technique.

And blatant roughing the passer.

I don't agree that he aimed for the chest though. He came in too high.

Re: "scattered" thoughts....

Please tell me why.

I had the original post, so here is my explanation as to why I think you're wrong.

The ruling was that Henne threw the ball forward and the announcers said it would be overturned because he was strong enough to continue his motion after getting hit. Therefore this is a forward pass rather than a fumble. During a forward pass you cannot hit an offensive lineman. If a quarterback is throwing a forward pass, even if he is intending to throw it to a receiver, and it accidentally grazes his lineman, it is a penalty. Otherwise this would not be a penalty since a quarterback almost never TARGETS the lineman.

Again, I think this was a missed call.

Re: "scattered" thoughts....

Because the Lineman is an ineligble receiver. they can only touch the ball if its tipped.

yeah he "touched" it with the back of his helmet.

Re: "scattered" thoughts....

Maroney had 2 No-Gains. He did not lose yardage once.

That is whats so great about Maroney: no matter how screwed up the play is, he NEVER loses yards.

Maroney is an enigma. He played very well today in my opinion. He was much more decisive in his reads and cuts and did a good job after initial contact. Give credit to the offensive line looks like they got a really good push of the snap.

Whenever you go head first into the QB around the head, you are going to get the penalty flag. It was a good call. Chung was at fault and will probably be fined.

Besides, it wouldn't have mattered. The Pats had another penalty on that play although it was a 5 yard holding call, but it was still an automatic first down.

Right but the contact was incidental (hitting the lineman in the back of the helmet). There is an incidental clause within the definition of the forward pass that becomes incomplete where the Quarterback is in the process of being sacked yet is able to get off a forward pass. If the ineligible lineman knowingly receives or interferes with the flight of the ball, that is a penalty.

However you can clearly tell that Henne's throwing motion was interferred with.

The point on which i disagree with you is that he went in there intending to rough the passer. That will just get him into BB's doghouse.

Is that the equivalent of throwing a flag against me? Ok, I probably did not read all the posts. That said, poor technique or not, Chung's helmet made contact with the QB's head (on the initial hit). Like it or not that will elicit a flag almost every time.

I can find no such reference to an incidental clause in any documentation of the "illegal touching" penalty.

Please provide a reference.

Regarding the measurement, I thought the same, but you cant tell from the Camera angle, it will be a slanted view
