Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

I am so glad the season is right around the corner...I can't wait

If you guys want to laufg there is a thread on the steelers forum about how the Pats will not make the playoffs...it's pretty funny

Anything to take the focus off of their scumbag QB, I guess?

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

Well this move appreciably helps the pass rush. Let's hope "The Patriot Way" reinvigorates his footballing soul and we see the best of Derrick Burgess.

A front 7 of Warren, Wilfork, Seymour, Thomas, Mayo, Guyton/Lenon/Bru and Burgess is damn sexy.

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

The man led the league in sacks with 16 on a very bad Raiders team in 2005 - That alone spells a very good deal for the Patriots and the Raiders can use those picks to continue to slowly develop into a professional football team

Yeah, but Deltha O'Neal also led the league in INT's that same year with 10 and look how he turned out for us...I'm just saying don't rely too much on what a player has done in the past...

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

This is funny. Im reading what raiders fans are saying about what they are getting for trading Burgess. They think they are getting the 3rd AND 5th for 2010 but little do they know we dont have a 5th rounder in 2010 since we traded it away to the Eagles silly raider fans hahahaha

Would you happen to have a link to that?

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

I am really excited to add Burgess to this team. He's been an excellent pass rusher on some Raider teams that did not have another pass rushing threat. Put Burgess on the same field as Thomas and Seymour and he could have a really good year. I am unsure if Burgess can make the transition to OLB at this stage in his career, even though he has played it in the past. His injury history is also a concern, but guys with his pass rush abilities are rarely available at a 2 million dollar salary and 3rd and 5th round picks.

I'll be interested if adding Burgess actually mean more 4-3 or if he's going to stand up and play OLB. If the Patriots still add Kevin Carter, I think the Pats could end up being in a 4-3 more than 50% of the time.

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

I would've happily given up a 3rd and a 4th for Burgess - not every year, but given the fact we have so many Day One picks in 2010, I'm completely fine with this, and if Lombardi's right, we got an even better deal. Love it.

Just a note. The picks would actually be Day 2 and Day 3 picks according to the new draft schedule..

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

If it's a 2010 3rd AND a 2011 5th, seems a bit high considering Oakland really wanted to get rid of him, especially after signing Ellis, but he definitely makes us a better team.

I wonder if BB would have made this deal if Crable were healthy.

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

Does this do anything to change the Kevin Carter scenario?

No. I don't believe it does. Carter would be lining up as a 3-4 DE in place of Warren or Seymour.

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

I don't know if this is the same one that he was referring to, but here's one: New England will Not make playoffs from SteelersFever. This might deserve its own thread here.

I don't care how much you hate New England, I don't see how you think this team (barring disastrous injury) doesn't make the playoffs. Reality distortion field, up!

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

3rd and a 5th huh?

Looks like both teams won with this trade.

Oakland gets rid of an unhappy player and acquires a couple picks, and the Pats get their pass rushing OLB that they needed.

I like it.

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

This is a great signing and badly needed, I think we are all set now. 16-0 regular season here we come again but this time we will add the ring at the end of it all.

Re: Pats acquire DE/OLB Derrick Burgess for draft pick

Sacks in the past 4 years:

16
11
8
3.5

You might notice a trend there, if you look. Some of us are a bit wary of overspending for a disgruntled player, given that falling statline.

Deus - Thank you for the perfect example of stats without context.

In 2005, when Burgess put up 16 sacks, he was lining up at RDE next to Warren Sapp or Ted Washington.

In 2006, when Burgess put up 11 sacks, he was lining up next to Tommy Kelly or Warren Sapp.

In 2007, when Burgess put up only 8 sacks, he was lining up next to Gerard Warren or Terdell Sands with Tommy Kelly lined up at the opposite DE..

And in 2008, when Burgess put up only 3.5 sacks, he lined up at both LDE (strong side) and RDE and was either next to Tommy Kelly (LDT) or Gerard Warren (RDT).

What I notice is that as the quality of talent that Burgess was lining up next to went down, so did his sacks. Meaning that teams were able to focus on him more with double teams.

Yikes, and the rich just get richer, no wonder why everyone hates us. Just got off the Jets board, they're freakin pissed..............

A stud D-line with great youth in Ron Brace and a motivated Seymour and Big Vince both in "$$$ prove it" years.

A hard hitting, ball-hawking "now young" and talented defensive backfield with so much damn depth now that we can't even say who are starting CBs will be it's that damn competitive and deep right now.

And now this, the one missing piece, the speed edge rusher was the one missing spice to this season and it's now been locked up. Every piece of motivation that may have been sucked out of him in the "Black hole" has now just been dusted off and re-surfaced. Welcome to greatness Derrick, we know what you can and will be motivated to do now that you are here.

To quote that dude on the couch who had just drafted "Whoooooseyourmama".

"Lock it up ---- CHAMPIONSHIP !"

wow. after reading that i think to myself about what a laugh it is to say that steelers fans are the "best" fans in football.

Re: DAM ... Belichick must be a HUGE Riaders fan ?

If you changed teams because of a logo.....we didn't want ya.

I believe he changed teams over what he felt was a slight by the owner against the fans. I was going to say that it was obvious, but clearly, from your post, it wasn't.

Re: DAM ... Belichick must be a HUGE Riaders fan ?

When you understand the rule you will realize the correct call was made.....
Actually, the correct call would have been, PERSONAL FOUL, BLOW TO THE HEAD OF THE QUARTERBACK, 15 YARDS, AUTOMATIC FIRST DOWN.

Re: DAM ... Belichick must be a HUGE Riaders fan ?

Regret .... Actually, None.

Lets say there is a WEE bit of animosty over the TuckRule/SnowJob game.
please take note of the frames at .58 & .59 seconds.
With two hands on the ball at point of contact ... bla bla bla

YouTube - The Tuck Rule

Sorry Charlie, you can't see 3D from a 2D image. It only gives the appearance of there being two hands on the ball, not to mention that its blurry as hell and nearly impossible to tell from the shadows on that film. Also, lets not forget the illegal hit to the head by Woodsen that wasn't called.
