Yes, breaking down the opposing teams as we head into the season is just silly.

If they were actually good, then maybe. However, the Bills, Dolphins and especially the Jets aren't going to be any threat to the Pats.

I would think a franchise that has 12 playoff appearances in 49 years would sing the priases of the coach who led them to 3 of them in 5 years.
Isn't Herman Edwards worthy of enshrinement in the Jets Hall of Fame? Other than Webb Ewbank, he is probably the most successful coach in the history of the franchise.
So careful when you make sarcastic remarks about Edwards being good, he's one of the best you've ever had.
This is the biggest loser mentality you can have as a sports fan. Sorry I dont enshrine or accept mediocrity. Herm was a ****y head coach who got by w/ parcells players and teams. The history of the Jets has nothing to do w/ how I judge head coaches. I have been a fan since 98 not 69. I dont really get wrapped up in the whole ****ty history thing as much as people blow it out of proportion. In my lifetime as an NFL fan the Jets have been a middle of the pack team in the NFL. In that same span I can think of nearly a dozen teams I would rather be a Jets fan then

Ok, thanks for your opinion on the matter. Feel free not to read threads that you think involve teams that aren't a threat to the Patriots.

Back to the heavy and uptight are we man? All these negative waves? Why can't you dig that the sun is shining?

I just made that statement to reference that you cant just look at stats and declare Mangini a good coach. I think he still has potential to be an exceptional coach, however come game day he has 0 clue for the game. He is too much of a thinker that it hinders his ability to make decisions come gameday which involve gut feelings of the game as it progresses.

Yes and no. Wins and losses go a very long way in judging a coach.
In Mangini's case, I think the other factors work in his favor. The team he took over was awful and headed in the wrong direction. He took over a franchsie that had 11 winning seasons in 46 years, and went on to have 2 winning seasons in 3.
Every coach has strengths and weaknesses. Every loss results in a coaches decisions being criticized. In game decisions are not the sole judgment of a good or bad coach.

Then there are no coaches that belong in the Jets Hall of Fame?

I agree with that. It's like people are satisfied with a Patriots team that should win the super bowl every season but come up short. However, I'll give them a pass for 2008. Ever since their last super bowl win, they are quickly becoming the Atlanta Braves of the NFL; always win the division, go far in the playoffs but find a way to come up short. People hate on me because I have such high expectations for the Pats. But when you not only the best QB, coach and possibly WR of all-time, you should win the super bowl almost every season. Even with out Moss, they were better than every other team in the NFL. Since 2004, the Pats organization has reminded me of the Chicago Bulls when they had Jordan, Phil Jackson and Scottie Pippen. They were simply unstoppable. In fact, there was a huge gap between the Bulls and rest of the NBA. In addition, the only way teams were able to beat the Bulls is if there were injuries or when Jordan and Jackson retired. However, I'm obviously wrong in my analysis because the Pats are acting more like the Braves example than the Chicago Bulls example.

There you go Deus, I just made this thread more interesting.

I agree that mangini took on a bare bones team but we disagree on one thing. he didnt take on a team w/ 11 winning years in 46 seasons. What does Glenn Foley, Neil O'Donnell or Ray Lucas have anything to do w/ his teams? He took a squad in 08 in which he underachieved w/ given where we were after 12 weeks. He made countless bone head decisions on game day including turning his D vanilla in foxboro and nearly costing us that game

Agree, excellence is the ultimate goal of sports, if you aren't striving for greatness your basically jerking off.

Then there are no coaches that belong in the Jets Hall of Fame?

I dont pretend to be a Jets history buff but I know Weeb Ewbank won a SB and was thought of as impactful figure in the AFL transitioning to NFL days. Besides him, none.

How is it that Mangini gets your team to 8-3 then the QB that was chosen for him stinks up the joint, and the last 5 games belong ot Mangini but the first 11 dont?
The truth is he had them overachieving for 11 weeks, not underachiving for 5.
Its ironic that you lambaste him for a strategic move in a VICTORY because it almost cost you the game. Wouldnt the sum total of his strategy be postive since the result was a win?

New York Jets 2009 Preview
June 29, 2009 by Andy Benoit

Two things in pro football excite the media (especially the rabid New York media): a brash, garrulous head coach, and a sexy, high-profile quarterback. The 2009 New York Jets offer both. The coach is longtime NFL assistant Rex Ryan, one of the most respected and creative defensive innovators in today’s game. The quarterback is No. 5 overall pick Mark Sanchez, a polished though inexperienced Southern Cal star.

Predicted: 4th AFC East

I dont feel its ironic I blasted him even in victory. Isnt that the whole mantra of BB and the Pats? The humble pie even in victory we have a ton to improve upon? He coached like a mangina and made mind numbingly bad call after another. Check the seahawks game last year as another point of reference. His refusal to put the ball in Leon Washington's hand or become more run oriented once Favre got dinged up is beyond me. A team victory does not mean you cant be critical. Let me be frank that even at 8-3 I hated his style. The collapse was just the conclusion of his putrid coaching in my book not the beginning

That's fine, but you're using where they were after week 12 to argue that he underachieved. If they sucked even then, then he didn't underachieve. If they were playing well, then they underachieved down the stretch, but he still deserves credit for getting a team to play over its head for 11 weeks.

In my opinion Favre and the Jets run game carried his sorry ass to 8-3. It is possible to have a good team w/ a god awful coach. The Jets from earlier this decade say hi especially 04

A few gems; some humor:
TE: Bubba Franks Look, Bubba, we love ya––how could we not love a guy named Bubba?––but it’s time to hang ‘em up. Your 40-time will soon surpass your weight.
a surprise assessment on a former Pat:
RT: Damien Woody Has looked more like the former Patriot version of Damien Woody than the former Lion version. Can he stay figuratively, but not literally, hungry?
and some contract details that I did not know about:
CB: Lito Sheppard* Looking for a fresh start after ugly ending to Philly career. He’d better play well––the Jets have a $10 million option on him next year.
while this sums up their draft:
Over the course of one weekend, the Jets traded basically their entire draft in order to get Sanchez and third-round power running back Shonn Greene. These are good building blocks.

Even if Sheppard plays well, realistically is there any way that the Jets pay $10M for him next year? Reminds me of when the Pats signed Stallworth before 2007- IIRC, they had a $10M option on him for 2008, but unsurprisingly they didn't pick it up.

You are totally backward here.
He played more conservative than YOU thought he should, but that was a winning formula in that game. That is what its about not style points.

Its also possible to have a mediocre team coached up.

A mediocre team w/ the following pro bowl players: Revis, Mangold, Jenkins, Washington, Faneca, Jones, Favre (its a joke he made the pro bowl but up until the titans game he was a deserving player), the Jets were not a mediocre team last year w/ the talent they possessed.

Good observation. The eagles also get a 2nd rd'er from us if we pickup the option. What probably will happen is that if he is good we will try and work out a new deal w/ him to sign day one of FA. At worst were trading a 5th rd'er and using 3 mil to take a shot on a once pro bowl corner.

OK, if we are digressing to judging the quality of a team based on the probowl voting process, we might was well start discussing the opera.
You agree Favre is a joke on that list.
That leaves you a s/ter, 3 offensive players and 2 defensive players.
If you seriously think that 5 players can determine the quality of a team, you have no clue what you are talking about.
Medicority in a football team comes from the middle and bottom of the roster, not the 5 top players.
I can name 5 good players on any medicore team.

Where was that talent in the last 5 weeks? I dont think a team that is 'better than medicore' is capable of finishing a season 1-4.
