Kind of an interesting perspective from a guy who covers the Panthers full time:

i really find it hard to see happening...the best bargaining chip the pats had was cassel and the panthers need a QB. No way BB gives the first this and next yr for peppers. he would package the first and the #34 this yr and move up and get anyone he wanted like clay matthews etc.

I think the more interesting commentary comes from the fans responding to his blog post. They seem resigned to the fact that Peppers is definitely going to be traded.

I thought about posting this, but it's not really anything we haven't been talking about. The fact that he's a beat writer is interesting, but Mike Reiss is a rare level of quality in coverage guys. And for that matter, Reiss doesn't believe the Pats will make a run at Peppers.

Still, after watching some highlights on Youtube, dang. Great football player.

I think his tag # has handcuffed them in FA just like Matt was doing with the Pats.

If somehow this trade goes down, a lot of Panthers fans will be sorely disappointed with the take, imo.

Interesting perspective and a great player, I agree. However, I don't see the Patriots breaking the bank to sign Peppers (either in draft picks or salary), especially when Wilfork needs to be signed for the long term.

It was funny to read the comments below the blog.. they all looked very familiar and I felt bad for the people posting.. Things such as 'I would take a first and a second for Peppers.. All three Patriots 2nd rounders would work.. ' etc etc.. Having just gone through it with Cassel I wanted to say - dont get your hopes up it will be better that way for you in the end hahahaha

Carolina is STUCK with Peppers and looking to Unload him for whatever they can get!

Sounds like that writer read my mind.

An old college buddy of mine is a big Carolina fan and his 'rumour' is that Peppers to NE was the talk of the combine. In his view NE have done part one by freeing up the cap/releasing Vrabel and now its how many of the day 1 picks NE have to part with to get it done. His view was both JP and BB want this bad ... and it happens in the next few days

Take it all with a lot of salt obviously but lets hope we don't give up the farm if we do go for him ... he said most Panther fans wanted/expected at least the Pats 1st and 3rd...

will give them a second round draft pick for peppers and "a player to be named later" :singing:

Well they can expect all they want. How does a 1st this year and a 3rd next year sound. Take it or leave it Carolina. Evidently a franchise tag don't mean crap anymore.

I already posted this under another thread, but the Providence Journal speculated about this happening yesterday, and suggested that the Pats are the one AFC team listed by Peppers as one of the 4 teams to which he would accept a trade:

First update: Matt Cassel headed to Kansas City | New England Patriots | projo.com | The Providence Journal

According to the article: "The return seems extremely light, especially since the Chicago Tribune reported the Pats were seeking either first- and third-round draft picks, or two second-rounders, for Cassel alone. But speculation is New England is attempting to clear cap space to make a run at a high-priced free agent or trade for a high-priced veteran.

One scenario being floated about is the Pats attempting to trade for Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers, who was given the franchise tag by the Panthers. Adam Schefter of the NFL Network has reported that New England is the only AFC team to whom Peppers will approve a trade, and it's possible that if the Panthers trade him, they want to deal him out of the NFC."

I don' know whether this is all just rumors being circulated around or if the Pats are serious about Peppers, but it isn't totally ludicrous given Carolina's salary cap issues, Peppers wanting out, and the Pats need for a pass rushing OLB. It's really the only realistic chance we have of landing a top-flight talent of his ilk. DeMarcus Ware and Terrell Suggs aren't going anywhere.

I hear the Patriots have a second round pick they can spare. Maybe if the Panthers were to throw in Adam Seward?

I would prefer Richard Marshall. :singing:

I'm pretty sure Schefter has said definitively that NE is that AFC team.

Re: Speculation from Carolina Pans going after Peppers

As all the news of this 3 way trade comes about, I'm suddenly not ok. I don't even think the addition of Peppers would help. Well, maybe a little.

I wouldn't give more than a first rounder for Peppers. Every good team needs a stable of cheap draft picks. We're holding all the cards with 6 first day picks (including likely 3rd for Asante.) Priority should be to extend Wilfork and Mankins. See what's left after that and check out the price for Peppers. In the end, I'm happy with 7 first day picks. We can move a couple of them to next year's draft and still have five quality picks. Who needs Peppers?

Adam WHO............

Do you think it's a possibility that the pats had the idea of driving down the trade market a bit on franchise players when they took a second for MC?

Before anybody jumps all over me, it's just a wild theory.

In essence we still got almost a 1st, plus BB can say "hey, we only got a second for a franchise QB... what more do you want for a DE/OLB conversion project with a $16.5 Million price tag?"

We might just be able to get him for OUR second plus some spice in the form of mid to late round picks :confused2:
