Belichick will handle the Gaffney opening like he always does. He will sign a vet, and draft a replacement. The WR corps needs some youth there after the Jackson failure. Besides there were not enough balls to go around. Maybe the TEs wil get a few more catches.

I want Brian Robiskie in the late second or third.

Any of the Combine kids do anything for you?

You know Box, I just don't know that much about evaluating recievers to give a definitive, honest answer. I can tell a good one on film, but so often in college guys are getting away on athleticism alone. The one thing I think is most important to split end is suddeness. Good cuts, good burst, that sort of thing is usually what makes a guy correlate well from level to level. If you're going to play the x, you need to be able to get off pretty quick and get into slants, sluggos, posts, that sort of route off of the shorter drops. I like a guy that can crack as well, because he is usually playing opposite of the tight end. Having the option to run a quick jet-rack on a weakside pull-pitch always helps alleviate the strong side shifts and z-brackets that Moss draws.

That said, the guy I like the best for a split end is Iglesias. He seems to have good suddeness, seems to have good vision, he's a tough kid and has really good hands. His lack of 4.4 speed will probably drop him to the mid-late 2nd or 3rd. Gotta love it when measurables pop a good player into a cheap position.

What is the Tory Holt situation??? We do have draft picks and with a QB this guy has been very productive. With the amount of draft picks we have especially if Cassel is traded then we could use one on him with the cap room Cassel would leave us. He has missed 14 game in is 10 year career and at 32 I think has a couple of good years left. I think we could take a chance at a good WR class in the draft to grab some depth and ST help. Thoughts??

Iglesias is on my "safe" list and I'm really hoping NE scores big off the Cassel trade when it comes because I'd really love to target a WR in the first three rounds. I found Alphonso Smith's Combine interview to be noteworthy for the players he mentioned:

How long have you worked out with Holmes and Boldin?
"When I was a senior in high school, before I went to Wake Forest, Anquan Boldin was just coming off a Pro Bowl year, which was his rookie year. D.J, his bother, and I grew up together. We were on the same team and we were both going to Wake Forest. We were out on the field doing one-on-one's and Anquan was like, 'If I don't catch it with one hand, it doesn't count.' So it started then. I used to talk back to him and he'd talk back to me. Like, 'You have no idea.' With Holmes, it was in and out, being that he's from Belgrade. Probably sophomore, junior year in college."

You cover those two, it had to help you in college, right?
"Oh yeah. It made it easy. Trust me, it made it real easy."

Who's the toughest receiver you covered in college?
"I'll have to give you three. The best one is Calvin Johnson, obviously. Then maybe Darius Heywood-Bay and Hakeem Nicks. I got a chance to play against him my sophomore and junior year and he impressed me."

:confused2: I'm not so sure about him. I did like Dominick Goodman and Dobson Collins as UDFA options. Goodman is slow, but he's like Givens with his body; Collins has the speed to develop into a #1 WR. Jeremy Childs is a decent late round option.

I like Mike Wallace from Ole Miss as a 3rd-4th round pick. He's 6', 199#, ran a 4.33 40 and ahd a 40" vertical. Good hands, smooth. Reminds me a bit of Greg Jennings, with a splash of Deion Branch thrown in.

I don't see us panicking for a WR. Moss and Welker are gold, and with Chris Baker I see us running more 2-TE/2-WR sets. Watson has speed if nothing else and can help open up the field. I also see us using RBs out of the backfield a lot.

I don't see us spending a 1st day pick on WR, and if we can't pick up a decent one cheaply in FA before the draft we'll probably pick one up over the summer. Plus I expect to see more balance between the passing and running game.

We needed a WR before yeasterday...so??? Nothing changed except that Gaffney is no ;onger an option..There will be other vets that can dill that number 3 role. I like Aikens at 4...but I also afree they need to bring in a few young wideouts..Price might have been an option..but he went to SF...look for a few to be brought in via the draft UDFA..Nit sure they will go for a day one...a lot will depend on other additions to the team before late April.

Anyone who's been able to watch combine coverage may agree that WR is probably the best and deepest position in the draft. Lots of good day 1 talent and beyond. Personally, Id love to see us add Brian Robiskie from Ohio State. He already plays like a veteran, he's big, smooth, runs great routes and his old man is an NFL coach, so he obviously has a high football IQ. And of course there are other great WRs in the draft. But that kid is definitely on my personal short list. But "best available" player at many points in this coming draft is going to be a WR.

Robiskie is a nice safe option, but I'd rather do something more risky and see if a star is born.
