Aaron Curry, Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe would all work for me - not that I think we'll be making this kind of trade.

We're not going to take the #3 pick in trade unless a second trade to dump it is also already done.

This trade will be mind-boggling and make both parties happy, if you can imagine.

The value the Patriots want is going to simply be the best that they can get for him. If it's only a 2nd, it's still a good deal.

This is about what I expect the Patriots will get for Cassel. There

are too many teams unwilling to tie up a lot of money in a quarterback

plus have to give up a high draft pick.

So is it true that Cassel agent was able to negotiate in between the decision to franchise Matt and the submission of the tender acceptance letter to the NFL?

Time for negotiating with another club, 2 days, "but" by NFL rules, Cassel's old contract with the NE Patriots remains in effect until Feb 27, any contact between Cassel and another club would be "tampering" unless NE had received and granted a request to open talks with Cassel and his agent. What we think we know: there are 31 teams salivating for a chance to trade for Cassel.

What we know: Cassel is the property of the New England Patriots and 31 other teams are looking at their QB prospects and wondering how they can acquire Tom Brady.

So while my presumption that Dunn could start cooking regardless, I believe he has been encouraged by the Pats to do so, that bit of my theory is moot.
A deal gets done within 48 hours of the start of FA or my name isn't Jim.

That's not how they operate. They set a value for a player and stick to it. If the value of a player that played as well as Matt Cassel is higher than a 2nd rounder than he is too valuable for the team to part with and is of better use as a backup QB.

I'm not saying he is or isn't worth a 2nd rounder, that's just a hypothetical value for the sake of discussion.

Agreed. How quickly we forget Drew Bledsoe. Who thought we could get a 1st rounder for an aging veteran QB who had 'cement feet' syndrome? The Pats won't sell low on Cassel. They won't have to for a potential franchise QB that is just coming into his prime.

That's not how they operate. They set a value for a player and stick to it. If the value of a player that played as well as Matt Cassel is higher than a 2nd rounder than he is too valuable for the team to part with and is of better use as a backup QB.

If you think the salary cap implications of paying a backup QB $14 million aren't going to factor into the decision, then I think you are crazy. Assuming there is a salary cap in the future, there is a certain financial aspect to team building that cannot be ignored.

IMO, if KC's (or any other team's) 2nd, 3rd or even 4th round pick is the highest offer, there is no way BB is going to refuse the deal because he thinks Cassell grades as a first rounder. The bottom line is ANY pick BB gets for Cassell is gravy, since the other alternative was to simply say good bye to Cassell in FA.
