I have no idea as I am not affiliated with the organization other than I'm a fan. But my gut is telling me Matt starts this weekend. It's Wednesday and he'll miss some practice but my gut is saying that it'll once again be Matt Cassel time.

Yeah. That's my gut as well. But, like you, I have no affiliation that enables me to know that.

Not judging him in any way but that would be very surprising to me.

More importantly, even if this were true, why would the Patriots announce it today?

They wouldn't announce it. If it's true, and I have no idea if the report is true at all, but it would be some team source with a big mouth.

I have a feeling it's just someone making an assumption based on Cassel having left the team.

I feel Matt will play to honor his father. It's good that his dad got to see him finally be an NFL starting QB and have so much success.

I don't see Matt not playing with so much on the line and his teammates depending on him.

where is he from ? Calif? he went to USC but is he from Cali?
Yes, from Northridge, California, best known as the center of a big earthquake in 1994. Hopefully, it will become best known as the hometown of Matt Cassel.

From the irrelevant football stats department:

The Raiders are winless when playing at home against a QB whose father passed away the preceding week, giving up on average one passing TD per quarter.

Logistically, the chances of him missing a game is much lower with him spending the entire week on the West Coast this particular week. Had this happened, say next Wednesday, it's tough to imagine he wouldn't miss the following Sunday's game at home.

Thought this quote from Dan Koppen (yesterday) could indicate Cassel will be back in practice today.

O’Connell Under Center

Until Cassel returns, rookie Kevin O’Connell will be the first-team QB.

“He’s got to step up and take the reins for the day,” Koppen said. “He’s very capable.”

“In practice, he definitely has a strong arm – can throw the deep ball, can throw the intermediate routes,” Hobbs agreed. “Just like any quarterback we have, they’re great in the system. They can put the ball wherever we need it to get to.”

Yes, a terrible loss indeed, but the fact that he was already on the West Coast certainly eases the travel. All indications are that this was not sudden, more of a long term illness. I could see Cassel back in practice today or tomorrow and playing Sunday. Then maybe staying back in Cali. an extra day or two to address whatever family needs to which he needs to attend.

Thoughts remain with the family.

I'm not so sure about that. That may be a reference to an injury he suffered after being thrown from a horse earlier this year that required reconstructive shoulder surgery. [He also passed away in his home, although that is by no means proof either way.]

Culpepper.

Oh, wait. He's putting Detroit back in the win column.

Seriously who's gonna start. I don't see Cassel starting this week. I guess it's the kid?

Obviously O'Connell starts if Cassel doesn't.

Question is, if O'Connell were to go down, who plays QB then? Faulk? Or does Gut dress as the emergency QB?

Gutz is always the 3rd QB, listed as inactive but can be activated during the game.

On a somewhat tangential note, does anybody else find the prospect of, say, Vince Wilfork (who apparently played QB in HS. . . . ) taking a snap or two at QB amusing?

Imagine trying to sack the guy. The QB sneak would be good for about 5 yards every time. lol

Marc Wilson said he's ready to go

You know, I know we are all Patriots fans and everything..but this is one of those times I PRAY the players and coaches DONT read sites likes this.
This thread seems a little creepy to me. The guys father just died. Whatever happens Sunday happens. We will all live. And I support Matt in whatever way he needs to handle this situation.

OTOH, Favre's father passed away about 24 hours before, so he didn't miss any practices.

Good point. While Cassel may have taken care of family business before Sunday, his preparation for the game is in doubt until we hear otherwise.
