Kirwin on Sirius today says Cassel is the focus of attention this week in New England and has alot of pressure to show if he has what it takes now since he has had extra time off for the bye week.

Pat expects BB and McDaniels to plan an air attack and try and get Matt comfortable in passing situations down the road and starting with this game - Pat sees the dink and dunk not being used as much but more longer passes down the field to open up the offense as he sees it crucial that the team gets it done now with this game and one that may dictate how successful the team will be for the rest of this season.

I thought it would be more of the Lamont Jordan show but Kirwan sees otherwise.

Nope, he still won't.

Then it will be predicted for the 4th week in a row that he'll consistently go deeper.

NFL coaches cannot predict what BB is going to do, I doubt Pat Kirwan can.

Although I hope he does air it out more often, I doubt Kirwan is actually right on this one. Dink and dunk all the way.

I wouldn't be surprised if they air it out a bit more. They said on WEEI today that Moss and Cassel were supposably working extra together during the bye to get their timing down. At some point they are going to let Cassel air it out since I think they were playing conservative to let Cassel get acclimated to the speed of the NFL.

Not saying that there is no pressure from fans and media, but I sincerely doubt it will have any effect on what BB does.

I agree that the game plan will be mostly short passes. I know Cassel's first pass was a huge 50+ yard completion on third and 11 from their own 1/2 inch line, but teams have taken away Moss from Cassel, just like they did from Brady in the playoffs.

Furthermore, Brady did not throw deep very often in his first few starts - his first year, in fact - and I doubt Cassel will either. Cassel so far has been much more effective that Brady was in his first two starts, and I see no reason for BB to change because of a few maroons in the media and fan base.

Until Randy Moss is put back into double coverage by the opposition OR, in the alternative, sent consistently over the middle by us, he will be useless. Cassel needs to re-open Moss as an effective weapon.

I'm not saying bombs-away but bombs need to be thrown, at least once a quarter ........ even if they're incompletions. I remember Brady was forced to throw downfield by the offensive staff in 2001 (starting in Buffalo) ............ eventually he started to connect AND that was throwing to Patten.

Balance and the Bomb.

Here's a longshot. Lane Kiffin arrives as Cassel QB coach in coming weeks. Kiffin played QB for BB's friend Pat Hill at Fresno State. Then Kiffin went on to coach Cassel and the offense at USC under Pete Carroll. I believe Kiffin was the receivers coach while Cassel was at USC. Since the Pats have no QB coach, and if they are committed to Cassel for this season, Kiffin may make some sense.

Hopefully, Randy Moss will have more receptions than Nate Clements.

Makes sense to me....if only for mechanics and special attention, not to mention pissing off AL (just whine baby) Davis.

I think hiring Kiffin would do Al in. Dont believe the Pats would do that. Not sure how Randy and Lane got along. But now that they are both removed from that toxic waste site things could be ok.

Pat Kirwin is a former colleague of BB and a guy who doesn't throw out "stuff" without reason. He likes BB and the Pats and has been a supporter through all of the BS of the last 12 months. Anyone who dismisses his opinion does so at her/his own peril.

If he can't throw the ball more than 12-15 yrds; he should not be the QB. We won't win many games with any QB like that.

Fortunately you said "If". I cannot believe that any Patriots fan who pays any attention to the coach's philosophy would for one moment think that BB would keep a QB on the roster who could not complete a 40+ yard pass.

Example: Cassel's pass to Moss from the 2 yd line under blitz pressure in game one

I agree 100% with this and would like to add the possibility that Moss draws a PI call.

Nice post, dude. I had failed to connect the dots myself.

Of course, the only thing preventing it from becoming a 'great' post on this site is your abject failure to demean another poster, or tell people what they should or shouldn't post, or, at the very least, insist we are all unworthy of doubting anything Patriots. :singing:

How many times are some of you going to hold on to one decent sized pass from Cassel made over 10 quarters ago in play?

He has not thrown anything even half of that distance in the following 2 games so stop continuing with the 1 play of long so far - He is getting paid to make much more than 1 50 yard pass in the season and he better come through soon with several more or he won't be there at the #1 spot by December.
