Will Ellis Hobbs take over Samuels number one corner spot by next season? (Assuming no free agents are signed).

So, you've given up on Asante, I take it.
A little soon for that, I think. Asante has made some great plays for us.
Certainly room for improvement but I think he still has a chance.

    #24 Jersey

I think Samuel will be the best nickel/slot CB in the league. Hobbs and Warfield will be the outside guys.

And where does my man Blue slip to? I don't really like him at dime - I'd still prefer a Poteat, Hawkins, or Sanders there.

Good question. I guess he's battling with Warfield. It's a heck of a problem if these guys stay healthy.

We don't have a #1. We have a starting LCB and a starting RCB.

I think he has already taken over as the number one CB.

Not at all, just seeing how high everyone here is on Ellis makes me wonder what the expectations are for him.

Asante just doesn't have the speed for a number 1 corner, he'd be an amazing number 2, but his skillset isn't fit for a number 1. Ellis, doesn't really have the height for a number one, but he has a nice vertical, is strong, is physical, has good ball skills, and in my opinion, one of the best backpedals in the league. He has all the skills needed to be a shutdown corner, think a shorter Ty Law...

Well then, RCB, where the better reciever usually lines up.

No, he'd be an amazing #3. Jumping routes, not having to deal with the top, stud WR who can still get matched up against either "starting" CB. I look for a great year from Asante playing against the #3 WR and being on the field 60+% of the time.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ellis Hobbs. I think he showed some great talent, especially during the middle third of the season. He showed more heart, especially in the running D (anyone remember when he broke two outside run plays against the Bills by literally throwing himself on the ground and screwing up the blocking).

I just have to take into account that maybe we are overating him just a little because of the position he took when he started. I mean, we were all absolutely devastated by the multitude of secondary injuries, and here comes this 3rd round pick, size-limited, youngster take on some very solid WR's. Maybe, in the hype of it all, we overrated him just a little. Don't get me wrong, I think he could EASILY develope into a #1 CB, but I dont think he's there quite yet. Anyone remember him getting beat pretty badly in the Denver game? The Rod Smith TD is one example.

I think he's a very very good excellent #2, but I think it's a bit too early to put him over Asante. The first few games should solidify his spot at #3, #2, or possibly #1.

Good stuff fgssand, just think of what his contract would have been if they extended him in April 2006...

    No Jersey Selected

    Wow, what a find.

Reading these names being discussed at CB makes me feel better (less bad)about what we have now.

Now everyone is giving up on hobbs like we did asante back then. IMO Hobbs will step up to be a really good #1

Our top cornerback is in college now. If we do well, I think Hobbs is a nickel, maybe a #2.

Been really boring around here this week so it good FGS that you you took the time to search and recycle from the archives.

One thing for sure, our Defensive backfield changes next season and I guess it is long overdue, out the door go Asante, Gay & Wilson - two former starters and a nickle. Sticking around are Hobbs, Sanders, Merriweather & Harrison (I know Richardson, Ventrone & Scott were around in some form last year).

Add to the mix a new coach, welcome Dom Capers we are looking forward to your help, a few free agents and a few draft choices (possibly a one and most likely a 2 and / or 3).

The question should now be whether Ellis Hobbs is better than

    Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders?

That's actually not a question, should be a statement.
