Today on WEEI they were talking about what type of tender the Pats will
    give RFA Steven Gostkowski.

    According to Tom Curran
    A 1st & 3rd round tender will cost 2.3 million
A 2nd round tender will cost 1.8 million.

They said that if the Pats go with the 2nd round tender, another
team may swoop in and scoop him up, like we did when we got Welker.

I say roll the dice and give him the 2nd round tender.....
If we lose him, we gain a 2nd round pick.

This is a deep draft, another 2nd round pick would be sweet.

If he accepts the tender or another team does not make him an offer
we save 500k (even though it is a uncapped year).

Give him the high tender, we can't afford to lose him.

I expect that he'll get the high tender.

Considering some average kickers got franchised last week, Gostkowski is going to get the highest tender. Too much of a risk to give him much lower.

I certainly hope he gets the high tender.

Last thing we need is yet another hole to fill.

Tom Curran is, of course, not a regular on Miguel's pages:

So the difference between a 1 and a 3 and just a 2 is actually $1.5M, not $500K, and there is a halfway point between them.

Personally, I'd give both Mankins and Gostkowski the highest tender, and work to sign both of them long term. In any case, a second-rounder would be small compensation for potentially handing the Colts a solution to their kicking problems for the next 10-15 years.

Where are all those people telling me I was nuts to think a late picking, kicker poor team like Indy would consider stealing Gostkowski if the compensation was only a second round pick? Funny what the market looks like when lesser kickers start getting franchised. :snob:

The Pats should be doing everything reasonable to keep this guy. First Round tender for sure, but I'd like to see a long term deal when it can be done. For any team, the idea that it could pick up a proven, highly reliable Pro Bowl K, who will be around for at least another seven or eight seasons, for a Second Rounder is such a no brainer as to be silly.

If you going to tender him at 2.5 or 2.8 why not just put the 2.8m franchise tag on him? (I'm assuming the Pats can even after giving it to wilfork)

I would put the 2nd round tender on him. If a team wants to give up a 2nd round for a kicker then I'll take it. Especially if the Pats like the kickers that are coming out in the draft this year.

    (A) It's too late to franchise anyone for 2010.
    (B) From what I've seen, I'd be really surprised if the Pats like any of the Ks in this year's draft enough to let Gostkowski go.

I'd want to see what another team would sign him for, then have the option of matching that or taking the second. In this draft, teams are not going to want to give up second round picks that readily, meaning they won't want to pay a lot of money and give up a 2. This team has a lot of holes. They may be able to fill a bigger hole than the kicker would leave behind.

To be honest, can everyone get rid of a second round for a Kicker?

2nd round tender. I ll be happy if he goes out. Another 2 round mean a lot for this team . Gostkowsky is a nice kicker and has strong leg, but he chokes often .

Top 10 in the league, BTW I ll take a 2nd round over a Kicker always .

I understand (A), but if you take a time machine back before the tag deadline why not tag Ghost instead of tendering him to a 1st round pick? It's about the same amount of money and you dont have to worry about other teams matching or putting poison pill in there. But they didn't tag him so that tells me they are probably thinking 2nd round or less.

No, it means they didn't want to risk Vince Wilfork walking away when FA begins, because you only get one franchise tag per team. [The second tag is transition-only, and therefore useless.]

We are NOT giving up the best kicker in football for a 2nd. It's not happening. We will tender Gostkowski at one of the two highest levels. I expect the highest level as a positive gesture toward Gost with the idea of signing him long term. If the team doiesn't think that a long term arrangement is possible, then I would expect a second level tender (requiring a first as compensation).

Mankins will clearly get the highest tender. Even at that, someone might very well give up a 1st and 3rd for him. After all, a low first and third is worth no more than our 1st round pick. Certainly, I would give our pick in a second for a long-term contract with a player as good as Mankins. After all, we are talking about drafting a guard!

If BB thought that he had the best kicker in football, he wouldn't have gone for it on 4th and 11, or whatever it was.

I would do the first rounder. Much as I think we need him, if we lose him for a 1st rounder I wouldn't be too devastated about that.

All this talk about tenders is making me hungry

Best kicker in game doesnt choke everytime we are losing a game.

I dont care about how many FG of 50+ yards he hits when we are winning 40-3 over the Titans
