The Way We Hear It - Maualuga

People fail to remember that Rey Rey ran his slow 40 times at the Combine with a tweaked hamstring. Dude, shouldn't have run.

He's 250 pounds, runs a 4.6, and is possibly one of the biggest and most vicious hitters to enter the draft in some time (until next year when S Taylor Mays graduates) with his biggest negatives are overpursuing and not wrapping up tacklers, both issues caused by being too aggressive.

Why wouldn't we want this future bust.

I posted this thread because I thought it was noteworthy, not because it is my opinion. I have been agnostic on Maualuga - I'm not convinced he is a 3-down SILB for the Pats or that he has the instincts, pass coverage ability, or ability to grasp our complex schemes that is required. On the other hand, he has intriguing ability as a 3-4 SILB, and other than Brandon Spikes I don't see anyone being a clear improvement on him.

Total agreement on Spikes. I think that he is the guy to pair with Mayo inside. In fact, moving out of 23 like the situation I talked about in the trade thread would be a move that could facilitate the tradeup that results in Spikes. Maualuga...to be honest, I just don't know what to think about him. I saw him lining up super deep in that 46, taking wide open streaks to the ball, and frankly never saw him make the kind of play that screamed Patriots to me. I also saw him put on his ass an awful lot for a guy of his size and alleged agression. I just don't have anything that makes me drool about him, and the fact that he is so hyped up yet doesn't show up on film makes me really question his ability.

Why I wouldn't mind seeing us trade into next years first with any of the following: Detroit, Bills, SF, Texans, Chicago (just think they will cave this year...lets call it a hunch...so great time for y'all to go place bets on them winning the superbowl!), etc. Then trade up and sign that SOB!

I've never heard of anyone talking about moving Curry to ILB. The three USC guys, I agree. But, not Curry.

Aaron Curry can play outside or inside in a 3-4 primarily outside in a 4-3. Walterfootball has him listed in both the OLB rankings and ILB rankings. Scouting reports say he can play either inside this is from Walterfootball: "Extreme versatility to play 4-3 SAM and 4-3 or 3-4 ILB, but can also occasionally play 3-4 OLB ". He is the most Versatile LB in this draft.:D

On a side note, to everybody who is questioning Maualuga's wonderlic score and his ability to "grasp" our system, wait until you see Brandon Spikes wonderlic next year lmao! and I am a gator fan.

I think Maualuga is the only ILB that fits what the Pats need next to Mayo. People are worried about him only being a 2down lb but is that so bad? We need somebody to replace Tedy in that position, even if Mau only becomes a 2down lb we have Guyton that could play on passing downs while Mau helps being that thumper lb we havent had since Ted Johnson. Mayo Muauluga and Guyton could be a nice trio for a long time to come. Mayo the 3down lb who can do it all, Mau the thumper who can play the run and hit like a ton of bricks and is a faster version of Ted J, and Guyton who has great speed and can play on passing downs.

If Mau is there at 23 and if the Pats like him I hope they get him even if Barwin is there, Barwin could last until 34 but even if he dont im sure a Clay Matthews or English, Brown, or Maybin will still be available.

Consider Paul Kruger or Brinkley. Check the stats and combine/pro day. Maybe more upside but at a later round.

Exactly, I don't think Rey Rey will be wearing the green-dotted helmet, that's for Mayo. Rey Rey will be the crazy man back there.

EXACTLY this is a quote from ESPN and Scouts Inc.:Height-Weight-Speed 1 Displays an outstanding combination of speed and size.

the scale is acsending meaning a 1 is the highest and a 5 is the lowest. His overall grade from scouts Inc. a 91 of 100. 1s and 2s across the board. IMO Eric Berry is a better saftey than T.Mays.

Anyone know the wonderlic on Lewis? Just curious.

TJ was a runstufffer. Such ILBs are an anachronism. TJ was no longer a full time on player for BB, as far back as 2003. If you insist in having a specialist runstuffer for 3-1 and 4-1 plays, use an extra DL or draft Jasper Brinkley in th 3rd -5th round. You don't use the First Round for a reserve specialist!

Spikes was my early lead candidate for #23. Spikes at 23, Barwin at 34 (or a small trade up if necessary) and Delmas (probably with a trade up from 47) would have been my dream scenario.

In my current dream scenario, we trade 23 and 58 to the Giants for 29 and 45, get Barwin at 29, and then trade #45 for a 2010 1st round pick (possibly with some late round or conditional pick thrown in on our side). Spikes would be one of the lead targets for 2010 with an extra 1st.

Like I said If you are dissapointed with Maualuga's Wonderlic and his ability to "Grasp" our system then you are going to be very dissapointed with Spikes next year!

It ain't about the wonderlic, it's about the ability to read and diagnose plays from three yards deep. Name one play where Maualuga made a read, crashed a gap and made a play from three yards deep completely unsheltered.

The 46 is designed for ******s. Just look at sexy rexy.

I don't care what Spikes' wonderlic is. What I do care about is the following:

1. Prior to the 2008 season Meyer went to him and openly challenged him with becoming the leader of a young defense. Spikes responded.

2. Spikes has showed excellent ability to take on OT's, including Andre Smith. He is strong, physical, and excellent at shedding blockers.

3. Spikes shows excellent ability to read defenses and drop into coverage. He is a much better pass defender than Maualuga and is able to cover TEs.

If you really think he's never made a play like that in all his time at SC, then you should be careful throwing that word around. Thing about Rey is that people focus on his big interceptions and hits. You think he'd get all this hype if all he was was a big hitter.

Yeah, yeah I do actually. If I'm wrong then please do a swot on him and prove me wrong.

So this is a bad write-up?
Analysis
Positives: Good initial quickness off the snap. ... Quickly gets to top speed, flashing rare downhill explosiveness for the position. ... Reads the action quickly. ... Willing to take on blocks and has the strength and hand technique to shed quickly. ... Good lateral quickness to evade blockers and has the speed to beat backs to the flanks. ... Gets good depth on his pass drop and is quick to close on the ball. ... Punishing hitter with four career forced fumbles. ... Productive pass rusher with the speed to close on even mobile quarterbacks. ... Can break down in space to make the secure open-field tackle.

Negatives: Has a tendency to overpursue, opening holes in the defense for quick and savvy ballcarriers to exploit. ... Too often relies on his explosive hitting to knock down ballcarriers, rather than wrapping up to make secure tackles.
