Ryan Mallett trade speculation

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

At this point it's just a rumor about an inquiry. But playing along...

For everybody who feels Mallett wouldn't make sense for the Colts because he's not ready now and they could just draft a successor next year, consider that Manning is due a monster option bonus at the start of next season. Even assuming that he can come back from the surgery, will he be reliable enough to plunk down that $28 million bonus?

If not, the Colts have no qb for 2012. Wouldn't you rather start grooming a talented young guy for the job NOW rather than in April?

I agree with that. I don't know if the Colts will be ready to make a high draft pick investment on a successor just yet.

At the very least, the Colts will have to give up a second round pick for Mallett. The Pats aren't going to use a 2011 3rd round pick and give him away for anything less than a second rounder in 2012.

I don't know if they would do it a few days after Manning' surgery. Right before the trade deadline might be another story because they will have over a month to evaluate Manning's recovery process.

Manning's situation might have made them realize they erred in not grooming a successor, it also increases the odds that they'll need that successor before Manning's deal is up.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

Probably not. But Mallett was a 3rd round pick less than a year ago. Assuming the rumor is legit. I'm sure the Colts aren't expecting one of their biggest rivals to bail them out and not make a tidy profit out of the deal.

Desperate teams overpay.
But paying a 1st for a guy drafted in the 3rd a few months ago is more than overpaying.
There are a lot of young QBs out there to trade for and the chance of them working out isnt dramatically different than Mallett. People are spealing as if the Colts love Mallett and he is their top and only choice.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

Why wouldnt the Colts just keep the pick and draft a QB?
Why does anyone think Mallett would be their target? They could have drafted him in the 3rd round too.

The question is other than Luck is there another QB they like more than Mallett in this upcoming draft? Are they willing to wait two to three years to groom this QB after having to tank this season? If they trade for Mallett now, he might be an above average QB next year. They wait until next year and they gotta wait at least another year.

I still doubt they will trade for Mallett, but if they really believe there is a good chance that Manning is done or won't ever be elite again they might trade for him if they feel he is as good or better than any QB prospect coming out of next year's draft not named Andrew Luck.

Why use a first round draft pick next year on a QB if they think he is not going to be as good as Mallett and they can get him this year to groom him for next year? Now, we don't know if Polian feels Mallett is better than all the QB prospects other than Luck next year, but he might.

Not they aren't. People are rightfully discussing the possibility that the Colts may have inquired about Mallett and are debating the merits of such a trade and the potential flow on affects. Nothing more and nothing less.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

By 2016, Belichick will own the entire first round of the NFL draft. Perhaps Mallett becomes Luck who becomes Herschel Walker 2.0. This ensures Belichick's eventual complete acquisition of the first round, his greatness eventually consuming and thus ending the NFL like a blackhole. So, in summary, Ryan Mallett is Quetzalcoatl.

At that point Goodell will penalize BB the entire first round for not putting Brady on the injury report today.

Who says they even like Mallett?
They wouldnt draft him in the 3rd round, and that was with Manning not being under contract and his recovery from surgery unknown.
Why would they all of a sudden think he is worth a first?

Well the discussion has gone to that extreme. People are talking about the Colts being forced to overpay FOR MALLETT. There is no evidecne they even would want him, they wouldn't spend a 3rd on him. The hysteria that they would spend a first is crazy.

There's also no evidence that they haven't inquired about him is there? Right now what people are doing is discussing the merits of a hypothetical situation where a team is in serious need of a succession plan at QB given the immediate and long term status of its franchise QB is largely unknown.

I never said he did. But what says he doesn't.

The Colts didn't even get a legitimate back up plan for Manning until a week before the start of the season. Why does not drafting Mallett tell you anything about whether they liked Mallett or not? Polian, Caldwell, and Irsay were dumb enough to believe Manning was going to be back on the team. Besides, Manning didn't have his surgery until after the draft and the Colts' brass might not have even known he was going to need the surgery because of the lack of contact with the lockout.

They may suddenly think he is worth a first because until last week, they never even entertained the idea that Manning wasn't going to be their starting QB for the next four years. Looking at his deal, they figured he was guaranteed to be their starter for at least the next three years. Now they aren't even sure he will ever play a down under his new contract. Getting a Manning successor went from probably 100 on their priority list to top 10, maybe top 5, maybe #1.

That was when they likely thought Manning was fine, his latest surgery changes the game, they NEED someone serious to take over for Manning, betting everything on the Curtis Painters of the world won't cut it for them right now.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

I would absolutely trade Mallett for Indianapolis' #1 pick. Asd good a prospect as Mallett is, I don't think he would win any more games than Collins would for the Colts. Mallet would be learning on the job, and the result would be a very high pick from the Colts, likely top 10.

Maybe the Colts are more concerned about Manning's future beyond just this season, and want to start grooming their future QB now. They likely won't be bad enough to get Andrew Luck, so this would give them a one year head start. Could be a win-win for both teams.

Pats would get an immediate return on the Mallett investment, and it would free up a valuable roster spot.

I despise Bill Polian, but really have no more animosity towards the Colts than another team.

Now the Rats on the other hand, would be a totally different story. In addition to whatever price the Pats could negotiate, I would demand an additional #1 pick since they owe us one. Sign it "From Uncle Roger".

I say it is doubtful that they will spend a first. But if you can't see that their situation has radically changed over the last week, you haven't been watching the news. They gave him a five year deal worth $24 million a year about a month ago with a $28 million roster bonus due in March next year (which possibly before they know if he can even be a decent back up ever again). Do you think they would give him this contract now?

In April, they "knew" Manning would be back and healthy and ready to be an elite QB for the next 2-3 years at least. Now they aren't even sure if he will ever play again.

Trade him for Freeney strait up

Mallett for 2012 1st and 2013 2nd or no deal.

What does that have to do with what they think about Mallett?
If they were willing to give next years #1, which they know could well be a top 10 pick for Mallett today, surely they would have spent a 3rd on him in April. Mallett isnt a better prospect because Manning is hurt.

That doesnt answer why they would want Mallett. They didnt like him enough to get him in the 3rd round in April, with question marks surrounding Manning. Why would he rise to 'have to have' on their list, when there are many other options?

Asking if there is another QB they like more than Mallett in net year's draft is a legitimate question. If they think Manning is done or they are questioning whether they are going to give Manning his $28 million option bonus in March, they have to ask themselves these types of questions.

It doesn't mean the Colts pull the trigger on a trade, but they have to start thinking about a contingency plan if Manning never returns or returns a shell of himself. The Colts ran their operation as if Manning was going to play forever. Now they got think there is a possibility that he never plays again. They are behind the eight ball in this respect because they don't even know if they have a Qb on the roster to get them through this year never mind have a future plan.

Again, I say it is doubtful that they trade for Mallett at least until close to the trade deadline, but more likely, if they do, after the season. Saying the Colts have no interest in him because they didn't draft him is silly though. They didn't care about even getting Manning a legitimate back up because he never misses games.

Andy, they didn't draft ANY quarterback, like always. In the 13 years since Manning was drafted, the Colts have devoted a total of two 6th-round picks to QBs! Polian prefers to count on Manning and not allot resources to backups. So the fact that they didn't draft Mallett tells us absolutely nothing about their opinion of him. Maybe they thought he was a bum...or maybe the Patriots weren't the only team that considered Mallett the best QB in the draft.

All we're doing in this thread is saying "IF this unconfirmed rumor is true, what would it mean? What would he be worth to the Colts, and why?" And one very logical thing it could mean is that the Colts consider Mallett the best young QB who might be available for trade to groom as a 2012 starter.

Edit: and given the full circumstances, a 2012 2nd -- simply standard draft-day trade value for the 2011 3rd -- doesn't look like adequate compensation.

And 3 posters out of a handful in the thread.
Getting a 1st from the Colts for Mallett is preposterous.
If Manning recovers they would have wasted it.
Why would they trade their #1 pick for a 3rd rounder instead of using it on a legit first rounder?
Who even says the Colts like Mallett? There are many other young QBs out there they may like better and/or wouldn't need to give up their 1st to get.
