Money talks and if the Jets offer ends up being that much better, I wouldn't bank on it.Pats can't and i don't think will let Revis go to the rivals. He is stating pat IMO
which is why they jetisoned wilfork. to clear space for McCourty/Revis imo
I think it's much more likely that they simply don't see 50% of the value of Wilfork's current pact/cap hit, so they released him. Yes, it frees up a nice chunk of money, but they will probably have to use some of that to either attempt to re-sign him after he's fielded other offers, or replace him with another vet.
After all, whether Revis is extended or released--it automatically frees up lots of money anyway. They'll either save 20m on the cap (release), or about 10m on the cap (extension) for the 2015 season.
My guess is that they have multiple negotiations going on simultaneously and we could see radical changes around their cap numbers over the next week to week and a half. Releasing VW saved around 8 and a Revis deal could save another 10 plus. They can redo Mayo and save a few more, and they can also look at Arrington and Amendola to gain another 3-5 million. I really can't wait for the deals to start dropping, should be fascinating.
Question.
How many good players are worth losing just to bring back this one player?

I agree with your remarks but don't know if the Patriots do. Mike Reiss indicates that no dialog isGiven their ability to find quality players even during the season at bargain prices I would say two to three. However what you get in return is a player that makes their unit, their side of the ball, and the team as a whole considerably better and that is what makes the trade off worth it. If they don't then you shouldn't make that deal. Brady is one of those players he is just unique in that he doesn't care about being at the top of the pay scale, a luxury afforded by his unique circumstances. Reggie White was one of those players, as was Ed Reed and as much as we can't stand him Ray Lewis. It's a trait that goes hand in hand with the status of being a first ballot Hall of Fame caliber player. Revis is such a player. He makes the secondary much better, he makes the defense much better, and he makes the team much better and is a big reason they won their division, won the AFC, and won another Super Bowl. And as much as I like most of the players on this team I would fill some of their shoes with more affordable options to make sure he remains a part of this team. He is a difference maker and his presence increases the value and play of everyone around him, that's why he deserves the big money, because the team is significantly better with him out there. Very few players rise to this level but Revis is one of them that's why you pay him what the Patriots are getting ready to pay him.
I agree with your remarks but don't know if the Patriots do. Mike Reiss indicates that no dialog is
taking place between the Patriots and Revis's agents. Apparently, the Patriots want him to test the waters.
I would prefer that they try to reach agreement by March 9th or pick up the option. The option
is the only leverage the Patriots have.

so Howe/Curran said that the pats/revis have been negotiating constantly since the combine...yet reiss says no? makes no sense to me. who is right?
Ya Reiss says chance at extension long shot before tuesday. With no real news coming out i am leaning to that now
I wonder do they pick up the option then? if you cut him and re-sign you still have the 5million dead money. I dont see them letting him get to FA

I tend to agree with you. It makes no sense to cut him, carry that 5 million dollar cap hit, and then turn around and re-sign him to some huge deal (thus eating up more cap space). The Pats would be better off picking up the 20 million, spend the year trying to extend him, get another season out of him (could he really complain about playing for 20 million?), and then get the 3rd round comp pick if he leaves after next year.
