RUMOR: Revis "to hit the market?"

Pats can't and i don't think will let Revis go to the rivals. He is stating pat IMO

which is why they jetisoned wilfork. to clear space for McCourty/Revis imo

I think it's much more likely that they simply don't see 50% of the value of Wilfork's current pact/cap hit, so they released him. Yes, it frees up a nice chunk of money, but they will probably have to use some of that to either attempt to re-sign him after he's fielded other offers, or replace him with another vet.

After all, whether Revis is extended or released--it automatically frees up lots of money anyway. They'll either save 20m on the cap (release), or about 10m on the cap (extension) for the 2015 season.

My guess is that they have multiple negotiations going on simultaneously and we could see radical changes around their cap numbers over the next week to week and a half. Releasing VW saved around 8 and a Revis deal could save another 10 plus. They can redo Mayo and save a few more, and they can also look at Arrington and Amendola to gain another 3-5 million. I really can't wait for the deals to start dropping, should be fascinating.

Can't do anything with Mayo until he passes a physical, which isn't expected to happen for another 2+ months, so he likely won't be coming into the equation for awhile.

Question.

How many good players are worth losing just to bring back this one player?

depends what you consider "good players" Bill Belchck MO has usually been...keep Elite players you cant replace their talent. and replace guys who are "good" but not "elite" and replace them with FA's, Draft

Revis is in that elite group.

guys like Vereen, ayers are in the second. McCourty might be in the middle. Wilfork slipped from that elite goup to the second

and I would say losing Revis alone has a bigger effect than losing those guys

Given their ability to find quality players even during the season at bargain prices I would say two to three. However what you get in return is a player that makes their unit, their side of the ball, and the team as a whole considerably better and that is what makes the trade off worth it. If they don't then you shouldn't make that deal. Brady is one of those players he is just unique in that he doesn't care about being at the top of the pay scale, a luxury afforded by his unique circumstances. Reggie White was one of those players, as was Ed Reed and as much as we can't stand him Ray Lewis. It's a trait that goes hand in hand with the status of being a first ballot Hall of Fame caliber player. Revis is such a player. He makes the secondary much better, he makes the defense much better, and he makes the team much better and is a big reason they won their division, won the AFC, and won another Super Bowl. And as much as I like most of the players on this team I would fill some of their shoes with more affordable options to make sure he remains a part of this team. He is a difference maker and his presence increases the value and play of everyone around him, that's why he deserves the big money, because the team is significantly better with him out there. Very few players rise to this level but Revis is one of them that's why you pay him what the Patriots are getting ready to pay him.

I agree with your remarks but don't know if the Patriots do. Mike Reiss indicates that no dialog is
taking place between the Patriots and Revis's agents. Apparently, the Patriots want him to test the waters.
I would prefer that they try to reach agreement by March 9th or pick up the option. The option
is the only leverage the Patriots have.

That actually sucks to hear, I have a bad feeling he's home if he hits the market.

My guess is he was never going to renegotiate prior to free agency. That's probably why that second year is there: It prevents the Patriots from franchising him at a number lower than top of the market, and basically forces the Patriots to either pay him $20m or let him test free agency. Redoing his deal before getting a chance to field offers was never part of Revis' plan, and I'm pretty sure the Patriots knew this the day they signed the deal.

How do you know that the Pats want Revis to test the market? If the cut Revis the Pats lose $5m in cap space.

This is a complex negotiation. Lots of posturing and maneuvering....

so Howe/Curran said that the pats/revis have been negotiating constantly since the combine...yet reiss says no? makes no sense to me. who is right?

Ya Reiss says chance at extension long shot before tuesday. With no real news coming out i am leaning to that now

I wonder do they pick up the option then? if you cut him and re-sign you still have the 5million dead money. I dont see them letting him get to FA

I agree nothing happens before FA, why would Revis do that? he got a ring, that was his goal, glad he helped the Pats get another one. But I personally see a whole new defense this year, when you have the cap issues the Pats have you have no choice and look the good thing is they did what was required last year to get that 4th SB win, it worked.

I tend to agree with you. It makes no sense to cut him, carry that 5 million dollar cap hit, and then turn around and re-sign him to some huge deal (thus eating up more cap space). The Pats would be better off picking up the 20 million, spend the year trying to extend him, get another season out of him (could he really complain about playing for 20 million?), and then get the 3rd round comp pick if he leaves after next year.

So the Patriots are going to let Revis walk for the sake of finding out what he can get in the open market? Thats the most absurd stupid comment I have heard yet. Patriots are not that arrogant. If Revis walks it means they did not value him/position at what Revis wanted to get paid. Its nothing new its the way the Pats are and most likely always will be while Kraft and BB are running this team.

Negotiations are silent.. which they should be between Pats and Revis and not through the idiotic media who practically had them burning at the stake a month ago..

Both sides are staying quiet and I am more than fine with that.

This standpoint is really interesting to me.
Building a team in a capped league is 100% about value. That doesn't mean cheap players, it means you get back what you pay for or more.
If you are willing to pay a player what you feel his value is and that is not enough, you hurt your team by paying him more. At the same time, if he wants more than he is worth, you would like him to go to your biggest rival, because then he is hurting them.
Sure adding a player like Revis helps any team, but if you pay him more than what he is worth, you hurt your team more in what you lose because of that contract.
A smart team should never, ever take a stance that they MUST HAVE someone, or CANT LOSE someone. Then they overpay, and hurt the overall quality of the team, compared to if they walked away and spent the money elsewhere.
This fact is why you never see the teams that are racing to sign players and pay 'whatever it takes' to get them off the market as soon as FA starts win Super Bowls.

That's kinda how I'm looking at it as well.
