Heh!! I tend to agree: God LOVE Coach B, but he hasn't a CLUE as to how to draft Wide Outs...

My admiration ~ and that of a few others, here ~ is already on the record, in this Thread, regarding Greg Childs. He's a Day 3 option that would seem to offer TREMENDOUS upside for minimal risk.

I've always maintained that you can consistently pick up exceptional Wide Outs on Day 3, or Beyond.

From my perspective, it all boils down to Processing Speed: We've all watched, with frustration and anger, as Wide Out after Wide Out with excellent resumes and/or potential has flamed out, here...

I really get the strong sense that if we can discern ~ via Tape, via Test, or via Interview ~ who the guys are who can best Rapidly Read + React...we will start PRODUCING NFL caliber Wide Outs, rather than BURN them!!

I view processing ability like software and the physical skills like hardware, I don't know why BB has been unable to find good combination, I'd really like to know more about why Price failed.

That's a pretty good correlation!!

I cannot FATHOM why I didn't mention Diagnostic Acuity in my previous post: The ability to Rapidly Read + React is, of course, pretty close to useless if one does not also come equipped with the capacity to diagnose what one is reading and reacting to...The two Talents often go hand in hand, but not allways: I, for one, boast the Diagnostic Acuity of a GOD, and the Processing Speed of a Blue Fish.

I like Keyshawn Martin from MSU. Projected 7th rounder. 5'10 190 lbs. Runs all routes. Returns punts.

Reminds me of Dieon Branch.

GREAT eye, Brother Ninja!! :rocker:

BIG fan of KeShawn Martin!!

I can't believe we lost on a hitting the punter penalty. Keshawn has a monster game. He returned the punt to the 2 for the win. K-mart has some ridiculous speed though. He hits the second gear instantly.

I think the combination of those 2 attributes, diagnostics and processing speed, are what earthlings refer to as "football instincts", they know it when they see it but don't know how to define it, and defining it helps with the process of measuring it.

I have some ideas on that, I just need to have a conversation with Caserio, do you think he'd forgive being drugged and kidnapped if he got some really good skill assessing ideas out of it?

I can't imagine why not. :snob:

Marvin Jones is a senior wide receiver for the Cal Golden Bears. He will enter the draft. I think you're confusing him with USC's Robert Woods. He broke the Pac-12 single season record for catches with 111. Woods is a true sophomore, so he won't be draft eligbile until 2013.

Oh ye, my mistake, it was Woods I meant. Thanks for the correction.

Is it just me or is anyone else falling in love with Childs picture in this thread ? Seems like a beast and good value pick with alot of upside.

Have seen some Arkansas game but never noticed him to be honest. What was that injury he had last year ? Anything longterm or serious setbackish ?

He suffered a torn patella tendon, which like all serious knee injuries takes time to heal. That is why he really hasn't had much of an impact this year (16 rec, 192 yards and 0 TDs compared to 46 rec, 659 yards and 6 TDs in 2010 and 48 rec, 894 yards and 7 TDs in 2009). Generally it takes a full season to fully recover and be confident after a knee injury, so hopefully Childs will be good to go in 2012.

Because of the injury I haven't even bothered to look at his 2011 tape because I don't think its a fair assesment of the guy that will play in the NFL. Based on his 2010 tape I loved the guy. He's got good size and speed, has good hands and is very good after the catch making. I also like his natural ability to gain seperation, especially against press man coverage. He is similar to my other favourite WR in this draft Juron Criner from Arizona.

Greg Childs of Arkansas ~ 6.3/216

Greg Childs is an intriguing Prospect, indeed.

A torn Patellar Tendon ended his outstanding 2010 season, and he's been far less than 100% this year, as a result of which his statistics and his Market Value have collapsed.

Yet here we have a big, tough Chain Mover who consistently beats the Press, who Navigates the Field with remarkable Savvy, commands more Lateral Agility than most men his size, fights for the FootBall, and is adept at hitting the Catch at full speed, allowing him to send random Defenders flying, as he breaks DownField.

And he is a reliably tenacious Blocker, with occasional feats of sweet, sweet Brutality.

Because of his dramatic statistical drop off, this year, Greg Childs has seen his Market Value plummet all the way down to the 6th or 7th Round.

I find that both astonishing and exhilarating.

This is a guy who will consistently Move The Chains for you, both as a Receiver and as a Blocker, and is precisely the kind of eternally unheralded Hero who is quietly and brutally integral to the process of forging Championships.

Juron Criner of Arizona ~ 6.4/216

Juron Criner brings an intriguing fusion of Power, Strength, and Agility to the position.

He's tough to contain in Press Coverage.

His Long Speed is pedestrian, but his Short Speed is remarkable: He's Quick and Crispy, in and out'f'is Breaks, and while his Fluidity isn't exceptional, his Ricochet is outstanding.

He's a decent Blocker, though he's got the potential to be much more.

Criner's current Market Value appears to be in the 6th or 7th Round, and I find that startling: This is a guy with the Skill Set to consistently beat Press, make plays, and Move The Chains. Most will call that a Possession Receiver.

Fine by me.

What I call him is a Chain Mover who's integral to the process of winning games and competing for Championships.

Each to their own.

Notes

1 ~ Ty Hilton ~ yes, I know his name's not REALLY "Ty"!! :D ~ is the only guy I could bring myself to give the Beast label to, so far. My fellow Draft Freaks will know his name, of course, but despite a remarkable rise, this year, he still seems to be floating around in the 3rd to 5th Round range, which I find astonishing...Seems to me to be a classic case of Small School Discount. He's my favorite Slot End in the entire Draft, at this juncture.

2 ~ Justin Criner and Greg Childs are of particular interest to me. Possession Receivers aren't sexy, but they win Games and Championships. And these guys have 6th or 7th Round Market Values. If we can pick up those Picks, I'd love to snatch these guys.

Great Minds, Brother Wilfork!! :rocker:

Great Minds.

Maybe it's just because he put up 6/166/1 the night after Price was released (when I decided that the Pats have a huge need at WR this offseason), but I really like Kendall Wright. He's going to be a mid-late first round pick, but with a little refinement in his route running, he could very easily be that "Branch Plus" I was talking about all of last offseason, the guy who can run the entire route tree PLUS beat a defense deep. I don't want a deep threat unless he can do everything else as well, and Wright can. Ultra productive in college (101/1572/13 this season) as well. Let all the other teams fight over the 6'4" guys. I'll gladly wait for Wright at the bottom of the first. Who knows though, he might not make it even that far when it's all said and done. Biggest knocks on him are his size (which is almost irrelevant in the Pats' system) and finer details of route running, but he's got the athleticism and hands to make it onto the field in certain situations while he works on those routes. He has experience in the slot and out wide, too, which is good since the Pats' outwide WR spot is a lot more slot-like than it is for a lot of teams.

Love him. Fast, good hands, a special teams contributor (at a very high level) and a Saban guy.

Ryan Broyles would a have been my top WR* if he hadn't blown out his knee. Now Maze is at least in the conversation.

* Of the guys we have a reasonable shot at.

I'LL take the 6.4 guys, thank you very much!!

But you won't get any argument from ME about Kendall Wright.

LOVE that kid.

Nice thread Guys keep it up...BB and his Draft Brass should be keeping a close eye of this thread.

Amen, Brother Grid!

I think the emphasis on precision has allowed us to drift too much towards finesse, which works fine in the regular season but it doesn’t help you win in the playoffs against defenses that will be physical and use press coverage. I want a man-beater WR that can smack around a DB foolish enough to tango with him, which can lay a nasty hit on a DB and will block like it’s going out of style. It’s that old-school, hard-nosed football that would best serve us in the post-season.

Even though I hate the guy I respect the hell out of Plaxico Buress’s physical style of play, look at how he abused Al Harris, who is not a small DB.

Plaxico Burress vs Al Harris - YouTube

This is not to say that a smaller WR can’t be physical (Steve Smith) or that a bigger WR isn’t a finesse WR (Moss) because it ultimately comes from their attitude.

Regarding Wright, I love watching him but he’s going to be far too gourmet for my taste, I’d much rather take a shot on Marvin McNutt (who could be an absolute STEAL given his limited time at WR) and/or Greg Childs.

BRAVO, Brother Snake!! :rocker:

1 ~ Much's I love Wright, my policy against drafting for Glamor Positions in the 1st is WELL documented. :snob:

2 ~ I have precisely FOUR Split Ends on my short list, and Marvin McNutt + Greg Childs are 2'fm!!

He makes plays every game I watched this season. He might not have the length we want but its not always about size you know :)

I like Kendall Wright because of his speed, route running & he makes great catches on the sidelines, which alot of receivers can't negotiate.

For those of you that want size in a receiver, how about a real sleeper-
Brian Bostick WR Newberry College 6-4 230 40-4.55, with our last pick take a shot.

Might be wrong, but I think Wright will go in upper tier 2nd rd.
