So the guy who played 4 plays is worth less than the guy who played zero because of something that happened on a play neither of them played?
Seriously?
Once again you appear to have a reading comprehension issue compounded by an "excessive desire to argue about anything and everything" issue.
As I said: "no less than" does not mean "greater than". Zero impact = zero impact. I am not saying Hilliard ought to be cut. I am saying that I saw no reason to think he is safe just becuase he set foot on the field and others did not. The 4 plays where Hilliard did nothing added no more, admittedly just to my non-professional eyes, than the zero plays of far less experienced developmental players.
Hilliard is a blocking fullback. On perhaps the one play where a blocking fullback was needed most, a goal line play, Connoly was used instead of Hilliard. You do not think it is significant?
Seriously? It is a very specialized role, blocking fullback. If another specialist, our long snapper for instance, were benched in favor of another long snapper in the middle of the game on crucial field goal attempt, wouldn't that be significant in evaluating the one-game performance of the starting long snapper and his possible job security?
If you think 4 plays for a blocking FB is enough to judge him useless, you are kidding yourself.
As I said, and as you ignored, one
game is just one game. A single data point is not a trend. Maybe there are behind-the-scenes explanations for the game-day worthlessness of such an experienced veteran as Hilliard on Sunday, and he has been a star in practice and he is irreplacable.
It is of course a snap judgement to evaluate someone on only 4 plays. We were discussing, however, Sunday's game and
just who might it be that will give up his roster spot, should another vet be re-signed (Branch, Gaffney, Waters, ??). Based upon an admittedly very limited amount of info, one game, Hilliard to me seems to me on a short list of players who could be on-the-bubble, perhaps even over players who did not see the field at all on Sunday but that may have more significant developmental potential.
It's an
opinion. That's what we post here.
