Gaffney Released

I really hate this move. I know, in BB we trust, but I still do not like it.

Not a lot of home run hitting, game breakers on this offense. Stallworth and Gaffney at least offered something in that department. Outside of Lloyd, what regular has that take it to the house ability?

Ocho

The Pats have an open roster spot.

So much for that wide receiver depth discussed at great lengths back in March:

Gaffney
Stallworth
Gonzalez
Ochocinco

To say I'm shocked by this, would be a huge understatement. I really don't understand this. Gaffney is a Brady favorite, coming off of his best season ever. He knows the offense, is still relatively young and productive. This was the perfect signing, and a shocking cut.

I understand he has a nagging injury that has kept him out of games, but to choose a waiver wire nobody and Holley over Gaffney just makes no sense. Obviously some other team is gonna pick him up (Jets ?), that's why Belichick cut him now instead of a late cut, we have certainly seen the last of Gaffney as a Patriot.

I know it "In BB we trust" but this move makes no sense. I'd love to find out why, but BB would just say "I'm trying to do what's best for the team", but I think this move will hurt the team. Branch has gotten hurt a lot lately, and the depth is not there anymore. Mind boggling move.

I don't see it that way. I cant remember a rookies wide out that has picked it up as well as Ebert. Granted nothing earth shattering here as far as play on the field. But considering all the nfl vets that come through and cant pick up the playbook, that says a lot about his intelligence. Id say I'm impressed and look forward to his progress whether it on the 53 or practice squad.

Branch 2002 number 1. Edelman maybe 2

Givens 2003 is #2... Edelman is #3

Not sure if this has been talked about but you have to think about the gameday active roster when building a 53 man roster IMO. If the coaches saw that Branch had beat out Gaffney for the #3 spot, Gaffney is a #4 WR that doesn't have special teams value. With Slater and Edelman locks to play each week, that's 5 WRs right there. There's no way we can activate 6 WRs, considering the multiple TE looks we want to use each week. Do you keep Gaffney to be an inactive every week, or do you try to get a young player you can develop on the roster?

Cutting both Gaffney and Stallworth makes only marginally more sense to me than cutting both Meriweather and Sanders did last year. Let's hope that the results aren't nearly as bad.

Unimpressed was probable the wrong word. I just haven't seen enough to justify a spot on the 53 but would like to see him make it to the practice squad.

This is the thinking

Does Demps start to line up on the outside now and threaten defences with speed that is world class ?

Kinda of a very raw Mike Wallace without the $$$ commitment :)

ya, I dont really like the move....on paper, we should be fine....your main 3 guys are going to be lloyd, welker, Hernandez with Branch

but, if theres injures to any of those main 3, I dont like the depth chart after that.

maybe it bodes well for Edelman...by all accounts he had a great offseason, and he looked great in the first pre-season game.

and lets not forget Woodhead(500yards 2 years ago) or even ridley/vereen or Fells on the receiving end of passes

One scenario via Bedard and a follower on Twitter:

I'd lean that way RT @Sully6827: Ebert on roster now, plays Wednesday, cut before season and Gaffney re-signed at that point is my guess.

The Hut could be re-signed after week one with no obligation for a full yr salary hit

Count me in the hate column.

I can see it now.

Collinsworth: "Since Brandon Lloyd went down with the injury.....defenses have been able to clog the middle of the field without a real threat outside the numbers..... Defenses are just sitting in short zones in the middle of the field taking a way Welker, Gronk, and Hernandez.

They better sign another receiver that can be a real threat......and don't give me Edelman or Branch

makes sense to me......brady never like him all that much as a target the first time around......he just may not fit

also, I think what demps showed last weekend may have shaken up more than just the RB group.....I really think that between welker, lloyd, and branch, that they are going to commit to getting younger guys into the mix more......thye already have enough 31 year old WR's on the team.

Damn. I was really looking forward to seeing Jab back with Brady. I would have liked to see Branch, Welker and Gaffney together in a few sets to see what it looks like to have three experienced wideouts who know the system and have chemistry with Brady.

It's not nearly as bad as cutting Meriweather and Sanders last year. The Pats still have three solid WRs with veteran experience. Barring injuries, Stallworth would have never seen the field and (assuming Branch plays like played in the preseason thus far) Gaffney would rarely see the field.

With Gronk and Hernandez, this team doesn't need the depth at WR as other teams especially if McDaniels uses Hernandez more as a WR than he has been used in the past. Viscanco and/or Fells could fill out the 5 wide set especially if Hernandez is outside.

I am shocked Gaffney was released, but I feel the depth we had at WR going into the preseason was more of a luxury than a necessity. I felt that Lloyd was an necessity. I even thought Gaffney would be a necessity because I feared that Branch was close to done, but since Branch has proved himself in the last game that changed.

With the safety position last year, Belichick left the team with no clear cut starter opposite Chung with little depth. The WR position still has two starters who are capable of getting over 80 passes and 1,000 yards and a #3 WR who was this team's #2 last year. I don't think the comparisons are close.

I'm not a fan of the move, but as other have said this might be a handshake agreement that the team calls him some time after the first game to come back when he is fully healed. I think the waiver wire will have some decent WRs who can fill in at the #4 WR role.

"Jab could do everything well. I think that’s his versatility, he’s got good size, he’s got long arms, he’s got good speed, he’s got good quickness, he plays every position, he’s smart. He’s just one of those guys that, from the day we got him here, he was just so reliable and dependable because he knew what to do and he did it well. You gain a lot of trust from the quarterback when all those things matchup. I was bummed when he went to Denver and I was bummed when he went to Washington and here we are playing them."
