Report: Raiders to cut Michael Huff

The more I think about it, the more I want to bring this kid in so we can "kick his tires".
This is the kid from Texas, right?
Yes
DW Toys

There is no reason not to give him a try. Cheap, potenial, young, and if he doesnt work out we could just cut him.

Id much rather have Sean Jones from Cleveland. I think he would be perfect next to Merriweather in the secondary. And I think he would cost less then Huff. And if Huff gets released maybe it pushes Jones a step further down the free agent list of safeties which seems to be deep this year. And thats one less position we need to worry about in the draft, at least in the first few rounds.

YES YES YES.. Sean Jones should be seriously considered by the Pats.. Georgia product that has the nack of getting to the ball and the versatility to play towards the line..
Browns and Pats play very similar defenses.. This is almost a no-brainer!

DW toys nice info on Huff.. I like others think it wouldn't hurt to kick the tires and see what BB could do with him..

But I want to throw out another name out there for everyone.. Roy L. Williams.. Rumor has it he's getting cut..

In his 1st three years of the league he averaged around 90 tackles, 9 Pass Defends and a couple of INt's.. The past couple of years with coaching changes and philosphies, he's bulked up and see his production go down..
He hits like Harrison and he'll be 29 when the season starts..

He's terrible in coverage, though, and people here already act as if every 2 yard pass completed by the opponent was really a 100 yard touchdown pass.

I recall a few times see Eagle Wr's run by him for Td's.. But he was a talent and played at a high level for a few years.. He had a fair amt of pass defenses..

But in a way I'm glad to see people posting here that we need a serious upgrade over Sanders.. I've been preaching for a while he's a JAG at best.. Good tackler but nothing more..
Our Defense has really gone down hill due to our safety play or lack of it. With Harrison being injuried the past few years and Eugene Wilson career and talent going down the toilet, we were exposed so many times down the middle and over the top.

I don't have the same disdain for Sanders that you and Toys do. I think he's a starter in the NFL, and I think he was put in a position where failure was guaranteed last season. However, I am by no means opposed to an upgrade at safety.

He did not start but a few games and played in a very dysfunctional team under two head coaches in 2008. This kid was a good player in 2007 when he was a SS for much of the season. Then they switched him to FS. You can see his game went down. He is 207 LBS. Can't tackle? What? He had 85 tackles in 2007. Our starting safety Mr. Sanders had 64 tackles. In 2006 Huff had 64 tackles as a rookie.

Can't cover? What ? He had 11 PDefs in 2007 and an INT. Our staring saftey Mr. Sanders had 5 PDefs.

He has been bounced around by that team like a ping pong ball from CB to SS to FS. He is only 25 years old.

To all of you "no thanks" dudes. Thanks for your input and opinions. I believe he is an upgrade and might work well with Merriweather.

I think it's worth taking a look at Huff. I don't know the details of his current contract, but I think that if there is still a lot of money remaining on it he will probably clear waivers. His productivity doesn't seem to warrant picking up a big contract.

Assuming he clears waivers, giving him a look and a chance at a new start with a winning team would seem to make sense. He's young, athletic, and his good size and speed. He has the athleticism and all-around game to do well opposite Meriweather, and he did better at SS than FS for Oakland. He could be a bust, but he could also be a decent player screwed up by overly high expectations, coaching and scheme changes, etc. If he did well he could easily play his way into a starting role for a championship caliber team. It will be interesting to see if Cleveland goes after him, since they need secondary help and Bob Ryan coached him at Oakland.

Sean Jones would certainly be a good FA pickup, but it's by no means certain that we can get him. I'm not saying Huff over Jones at this point, just that Huff is another option worth looking at.

I don't think Roy Williams is an option. He's purely an in the box guy who is probably best used as a hybrid SS/LB at this point. I think we value overall play (both run and pass) too much to go for him. Can't see him covering TEs much less WRs, whereas Huff has the speed and fluidity that converting him to CB was once considered seriously.

I think Otogwe may get franchised, and if he hits FA is likely to be too pricey for us, and is more of a pure centerfielder. He's sort of the opposite of Roy Williams - nice against the pass but limited against the run. Not worth it to my mind for the $$.

Of those options, I think that Sean Jones and Huff offer the greatest likelihood of being good fits. Again, Huff may be a total bust, but it's worth a look, and I'm sure that Moss and Jordan would have good insights about him (even though I don't see Jordan coming back he seems to have had a good relationship with the Pats and would probably be able to give input).

I'd personally be ecstatic if we could resign at least one of the Sanders guys and one of the other Sanders/Sean Jones/Huff. We would be going in to the draft with 3 players at S as opposed to 1 right now. If we could resign both Sanders and one of Jones/Huff then I think we would be in really good shape, and would not be under pressure to pick up a S early in the draft.

I don't have disdain for Sanders. I think he's a solid player and would be worth keeping if we can resign him for reasonable money. But I think that we could do better at starting S opposite Meriweather, and would be happier with Sanders as a 3rd S in a rotation. We need fresh bodies and backups for injuries. I think Sean Jones would probably be an upgrade over Sanders, but he may be pricier.

Belichick seems to like Sanders. He was very complementary about his improvement during the 2007 season, and I haven't seen anything to indicate that he has soured on Sanders since then. I think it is mainly a question as to how open he is to resigning for a reasonable contract (something like $1.5-2M/year would seem about right to me; maybe $2.5M tops).

Michael Huff was the top DB out of college and he is a hidden gem.

The Raiders messed him up and didn't know how to use him.

This isn't the first time the Raiders have completely messed up a talented player, who went on to great things after they left

"Huff has been a disaster since being selected No. 7 overall in 2006. Not only has he tackled poorly, he's also been consistently beaten in coverage for the past two seasons."

He would be signed only to be cut

Disdain in such a strong word.. WE need to upgrade the position with a starter.. He would be a solid 3 Saftey/backup..

Disagree. Can you show me where this information is? In 2006 and 2007 he was better than anything we had other than Harrison perhaps. They kept switching him position wise. Disaster? Your opinion I guess, so that's fine. This year I agree, it was a tough year for Huff. Is it all his fault though? We are talking the Raiders. Look at D. Hall who was dumped to the Redskins. He played at a top level after he left. Yes or no?
This kid has an upside. It's not my final decision nor yours though.

If he comes cheap why for a try.....Trust Bill,I do...:D

I don't understand everyone's love affair with Sean Jones. IMO he is very overrated and is a liability in coverage. As McSully said, the Browns and the Pats play very similar defenses - and Jones was relegated to a spot in a rotation because Mike Adams was FAR better in coverage.

Jones is very good against the run, but he reminds me too much of Roy Williams and his inability in coverage (as well as his chronic knee problems) should be a red flag.

That being said, some team will bite and offer him a big contract. I am going to guess that it won't be the Patriots.

i just saw some college footage of this guy. i can see why he went at number 7. but in saying that i haven't really ever seen him for the raiders. but he looks like a bit of an athlete

I agree with you. He has played well and am I'm sure the skill is still there. Oakland is really good at demotivating a player.

Even if that's true, how does it hurt us. Heck we gave David Terrell a chance on the low percentage hope that he could reignite his career with Brady as his QB. If we signed Huff it would be to a cheap 1 year prove it deal. I'm not a big fan of Huff but I see it as a low risk gamble with some upside.
