Report: Raiders to cut Michael Huff

If the Raiders do cut him, any thoughts on whether he'd be worth a flyer given our needs at S? He has great athletic ability. Moss might have some insight on whether he's a potentially goood player in a bad system or a true bust. There would probably be some demand, but after the Raiders he might consider going to a team with a history of successfully taking on Raiders misfits such as Moss and Lamont Jordan.

No thanks. I think being only a few years away from being the #7 pick in the draft, someone will offer him alot of money. Regardless of his past performances, some coaches and scouts will blame the poorly managed and coached Raiders as the reason for his failure to play up to his potential. Im sure playing on the Raiders could be a good reason for his poor play, but I still think someone will give him alot of money.

Id much rather have Sean Jones from Cleveland. I think he would be perfect next to Merriweather in the secondary. And I think he would cost less then Huff. And if Huff gets released maybe it pushes Jones a step further down the free agent list of safeties which seems to be deep this year. And thats one less position we need to worry about in the draft, at least in the first few rounds.

He must be worth a flyer, worst comes to worst we cut him after training camp. I love the idea, he was a beast out of college and everyone sucks while on the raiders (see moss).

Considering some of the stiffs that we've brought into camp the last few years, it would seem lik e a no brainer to me.
If nothing else, maybe they could try plugging him in to the hybrid position where Tank Williams was working.

Does anyone know that if a player is released before FA begins, is he free to sign with anyone right now or does he have to wait till FA begins? Also because he has been in the league for a short time is he part of the waiver process?

I am pretty sure if you are released from a contract you do have to clear waivers.

I didn't much care for him coming out of college and I still don't. I'd rather find someone in the draft, especially if Moore slips into the second round.

I am pretty sure if you are released from a contract you do have to clear waivers.

If a player has four years of service and is placed on waivers between February 1 and the trading deadline, he's free to work out any deal with any team without going through waivers. The only time waivers kicks in is if a veteran is cut late in the season, or if it's a guy with three or less years of playing time.

Huff's rookie season was 2006, so since that's three years I take it that he would have to clear waivers first. However, I doubt anybody would claim him on waivers since that means they have to honor his contract if I'm not mistaken. I don't know what he's due to make this year but his rookie contract was for $43 mil total.

Before people get too excited about this "opportunity," let's examine the players New England has had from the Raiders:

- Moss: A big money Free Agency signing by the Raiders, he was one of the elite WRs in the NFL prior to being 'Raiderized.'
- Jorden: A big money Free Agency signing by the Raiders, he was a dependable reserve RB behind Curtis Martin who had some very big games against New England and had a big first season as the Raiders' feature back prior to his 'Raiderization.'
- Gabriel: Drafted by Oakland, he was all potential with minimal production.

When assessing Huff, which profile above more closely fits his situation?

He did not start but a few games and played in a very dysfunctional team under two head coaches in 2008. This kid was a good player in 2007 when he was a SS for much of the season. Then they switched him to FS. You can see his game went down. He is 207 LBS. Can't tackle? What? He had 85 tackles in 2007. Our starting safety Mr. Sanders had 64 tackles. In 2006 Huff had 64 tackles as a rookie.

Can't cover? What ? He had 11 PDefs in 2007 and an INT. Our staring saftey Mr. Sanders had 5 PDefs.

He has been bounced around by that team like a ping pong ball from CB to SS to FS. He is only 25 years old.

To all of you "no thanks" dudes. Thanks for your input and opinions. I believe he is an upgrade and might work well with Merriweather.

Seems like the kind of underperforming former high draft pick that Dan Snyder loves collecting.

I'm not -- along with probably 95% of this board -- qualified to talk about Huff's play, as the few times I've seen Raiders games the past three years I haven't exactly been scouting their defensive backfield.

But I'd expect BB to do his due diligence on the guy ...
