Zappe waived (Edit: so was Malik!)

Maybe I'm wrong but just feels like it might be a rough season...

People on the board attacked the media for staying Bill neglected the offense. And here we are a week before the season with a poor OL, one QB and only 2 running backs.

And couldn't tell if the offense was any better in the preseason because the OL was a sieve.

Sure to change. But not exactly forebodes well.

The line has got all of it's parts back and added a few intriguing but raw reinforcements. I'd wager that they're more likely to be a decent line than a poor one and that they will get stronger as the year goes on.

RB - The Patriots have an excellent pair of backs and I suspect that they'll be able to add decent backups later today.

QB - They obviously will have another QB on the roster later today, perhaps Zappe and/or Malik. I'm indifferent on Zappe, I thought he could be a serviceable backup, but his struggles in preseason were real. I'll reserve the right to panic after I see who they sign today, and hopefully whomever it is won't play a snap this year.

I'm curious to see how this works out. It seems like Bill and Klemm are in mad scientist mode trying to figure out the line right now. But I'm feeling a lot better about the depth on this line than I did a week or so ago.

If they sign Zappe to the practice squad they can elevate him on game day for a few games before adding him to the 53 man roster.

I don’t follow the Cunningham as backup QB hype train. He barely played the position in camp or in preseason games. A month ago everyone wanted him to be a wide receiver.

It is amazing to me that people are acually applauding this move because they want to be right about Mac being better than Zappe. There is zero reason Zappe should have been cut yesterday. Zero.

Zappe showed last season that he could win us games when called upon as a rookie. We had 3 years left on his next to nothing contract and Bill just took that and literally tossed it to the league and said have at him.

Now we wait to see if we sign some retread like McCoy or Wentz who have zero experience in our system when we could have actually signed one of those guys weeks ago when it was apparent to Bill that Zappe was going to be cut. He continues to make decisions that go against any barometer of reasonable. As someone else posted, he could have got Mac some help with a 4th round pick; instead gets a backup QB (even after Mac had a good first season) then dumps him the next year. And on top, we couldn't tell if the offense was any better in the preseason because the OL was a disaster so much so that just a few days ago we went bargain basement shopping using draft capital to try stop the bleeding.

Literally we had 4 Qbs yesterday, and now we have one. This is so mind boggling that X exploded yesterday with rumors/dreams that we are going to sign Brady! That is how bad this is.

This again is another huge mismanagement of assets by Bill at the most important position.

This is the ridiculous state Bill has left us all in. I really don't know anymore what it is going to take for people to see that the game has passed Bill by and while he was once a savant at making moves that were one step ahead of everyone else, he has now become the court jester still trying to muster the old act while his peers are laughing at him.

Relax ! Zappe will be back on the roster when they will IR the guys they wanted to keep.

Bill gamble that the league will not claim Zappe and if someone does there is enough cheap backup QB on the market that can be as good as Zappe. That’s not that hard to do

Disagree. I’m not applauding the move because of anything about Mac. I’m applauding because Zappe stunk. He was playing for his job against the Titans and he laid a big turd. He, and you, need to study the Carl Davis Jr instagram posts about accountability.

It‘s not what Zappe did last year. It’s about what he’s done recently. He changed his throwing motion over the off season. Experimented with sidearm. That experiment failed. He messed himself up, regressed, got steadily worse through camp. He earned his cut.

I don’t care if he comes back to the PS, or if some other team claims him more power to them both. There are backup QBs available and sad as it is Zappe is no more special than any other fringe NFL QB.

Relax, Zappe will be back on the PS.
I really don't think anyone will steal him on waivers. He's not that intriguing.
But, make no mistake, we need a decent vet QB - Zappe was pretty obvious that he's not there to be supportive and friendly with Mac.
He's a ****y self-defined Alpha. And it's about time BB makes a clear statement on the starting QB.
I think Siemian is the best option for our type of QB2, and maybe even McCarron - who did play well in the XFL this spring.

Are you Siemian brother or what? Are you paid everytime you put his name in a post?

If Mac can’t handle that I am not sure I want him to lead this team. Maybe if the other is supportive and friendly and let us win

why make that gamble with your back up quarterback? A quarterback who you have on your roster for the next three years for peanuts? A quarterback who as a rookie won you games!?

The "we want Zappe back" is pure fluff.

They're giving the entire league a chance to take him, they don't want him and even if he makes it to the practice squad it'll be short lived.

How many teams waive a quarterback they want?

Because he felt that the players they needed to keep on the roster to put on IR were more important than Zappe.

You can find on the market more competent backup than Zappe that are not that expensive.

I feel like this is obvious but..

There is no player on the roster more important than your quarterbacks. Zappe proved as a rookie that he could win us games and we have him for the next three years for peanuts. To go out and now bring in a veteran QB like a McCoy or a Wentz is just bad football business. You’re going to have to pay them, much more than you were paying Zappe and they don’t have any experience in the system much less have shown the ability to win games for us.

Not much out there that are free agents. A bunch of old guys and then camp fodder QBs under 30. It's too bad that Carson Wentz is a cancer on any team. He's the most talented one with lots of tread on the tires.

Well, the Patriots will have to make a couple of decisions about the OL in the coming week, freeing up space for two-three more veterans as the dust settles.

Looking at the 53, though, I like what I see at every level of the defense, at RB, at TE and WR. If the Patriots can add a solid QB and get some stability on the OL, they'll be a handful for the AFC East.

I like what they did on the OL this week, getting younger. The front office wasted opportunities signing so many journeymen over the summer. Adrian Klemm has a busy 10 days ahead of him. If Sidy Sow is up to the task, the starting could be fine.
Trevor Siemian is a QB who has won in the league with bad teams. He fairly young and supposedly is a good guy. He'd be an upgrade on Zappe and a veteran who can have Mac's ear like he had with Hoyer.

Anyway I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the "OMG we have no back up QB" crowd while their heads explode with selfriteous anger, ,meanwhile this thing sorts itself out.

I'm not panicking yet, but it seems to me that if this was the situation they were seeing in camp with Bailey, they probably should have started to deal with it at least at the same time as they started scooping up tackles.

From the top of my head if I remember correctly they’ve done that multiple times with Hoyer.

Hoyer wasn't subject to waivers at cutdown before, so they could make a handshake deal to keep him around or on the PS. This is a bit riskier because any team can claim Bailey.

You know you've written the same basic post, EVERYTIME you commented on this thread and I've only read 2 pages, I can't imagine how many times you've said the same thing over and over. You've made your point. We are clear about where you stand. Move on.
