More than just a grade. Assuming no big changes take place next week. Here is where i rank Maye on the current NFL QB list for this year.
1 Allen - I think he absolutely balled out this year. Currently the best in the NFL
2 Mahomes - I can't put him lower than 2 even if an off year. Besides Allen he'd be the guy I'd want next week if i could have anyone, also his cast kind of sucks. Kelce isn't the Kelce of old and his other targets aren't good. If we point out Maye's horrible cast we need to aknowledge Mahomes hasn't had a great one either.
3 Lamar - No surprise. MVP caliber year. But a little inconsistent at times.
4 Burrow - Another MVP caliber year. Has been arguably top 5 for a while, this year he cements it, but lets be honest about how amazing his offensive cast is. People complain about his D and OL. But unless your OL is complete crap weapons can do a lot to help it and just getting the ball out fast.
5 Hurts - Not a lot of passing stats but he runs a lot so that is a bit deceiving and typically they get up early so why keep passing?
6 Goff - After a so-so start to his career he's come on as one of the better QBs in the league. Just not elite.
7 Dak - missed most of the year but Dak is still clearly a better starter than Maye.
I think these 7 are clearly ahead. Everyone below is almost certainly or probably ahead to various degrees.
8 Herbert - Let's be real here. His first 2 years he had a fairly stacked offense and even before this year had a bit of a cheat code in Ekeler (less last year but still). He really hasn't lived up to the promised showed since. Almost certainly better than Maye right now... but i could see an argument.
9 Purdy - A guy who was blessed with the best offensive cast since KC's early years and a great D to put him in position. One year with only a good cast and little D support and he turns into a bit of a pumpkin? Again, probably better. But i could see an argument to say Maye is the play.
10 Love - A good 2 year stretch for sure. But I'm not seeing any true elite play. Just very solid play. Given his cast isn't amazing, but it really is a well designed and balance group. And they are a little better than they look cause GBs likes to run more than pass. Still rank him over Maye.
I think it's safe to say these guys are above Maye but there is a question. I think after this is becomes harder to be sure who is and isn't above Maybe
.
11 Mayfield - I know right? 2 Solid years in a row make me give him the nod, but I just don't fully trust it. And he has had a great year but played a lot of crap teams with some really good weapons at times.
12 Maye. I think considering his cast and how he has played. Calling him currently the 12th ranked guy isn't an overstatement. Of course this can easily go up or down next year and is not based on his potential but his play this year.
Guys i think are below Maye others might put above.
Tua - has had a godly cast.... but maybe Hill loses 1/2 a step and now you can't get it done anymore? It was all based on 1 incredible year anyway. Outside of that he hasn't been good.
Darnold - Amazing year this year. But i don't buy it for a second. Too much baggage and too many times we've seen one year wonders.
Stafford - Guy made his name tossing to all star WRs and did very little without them. Pass.
Wilson - His offensive cast in Seattle was underrated as was his reliance on athleticism to see him through. He's older now and can't 'cook' like he use to. Pass.
Murray - We've heard about his potential for 6 years. This is what he is. Which is a decent starter, but not special. pass.
So that is all I'll list. I could list more but nah. So yeah. I guess right now I'd say all things considered I think Maye is a better than average NFL QB today. Mistake prone a bit. But all things being equal he's the 12th guy I'd want right now. However... the difference between the 3rd tier where he current sits and the 2nd tier is pretty big. Hopefully he makes that jump next year and we give him the cast he needs to support him.
