I was going to do another Mock Draft using the NEP Draft Big Board - but i love theirs so much i won't bother!

I would attach the link to their site - but i do not have the post count...

Here are the first two rounds...

1a Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama.
1b Devon Still, DL, Penn St.
2a Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor.
2b Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas.

I would add that if we can trade into 2013, we do so with our back up QB's. If we can trade Hoyer for a 2012 2nd and Mallett for a 2013 1st i will be delighted. With these picks and FA we should be able to come back stronger in 2012, and still have a lot of 2013 draft capital.

For the record, in FA i would target V.Jax or D.Jax, as well as Leron Landry. I would re-sign or F-tag Wes Welker, and let Branch walk.

As well as the "monster" names, I like Courtland Finnegan at CB, but i think he is too valuble to the Titans and would not fit in cap space.

CBSsports has a new mock out. Rang is coming around. He slots us Nick Perry - DE - USC and Fletcher Cox -DT Miss St. Cox looks like he'd be a tackle in a 4-3 or end in a 3-4. Rang is coming around after some lousy early mocks. Reuter just mails it in. I think he gives us Chase Minnifield every week. And, now Brandon Lindsay. Ugh.

NFL Draft - 2012 Mock Drafts - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

I'm having a hard time targeting my draft/free agent hopes. After the game. I wanted all defense. 1st de and olb. 2nd. fs and cb. Then, I watch NO and GB play. Are we better off building the best offense in the league with TFB? Definitely, doable. Just need a couple tweeks. FA WR along with keeping Welker. Draft a C and WR. Just bleeping wing it next year. Or, do you try to plug holes on the defense? I'm beginning to think that's not the best way because everytime we plug a leak. Another one pops up somewhere else? Our offense is good enough to win it with a good defense. Are we capable of becoming a good defense? Doesn't have to be as good as Pittsburgh or Baltimore. Just good.

As far as your draft like the talent. But for some reason and i don't know why i am just not that high on Still he could prove me wrong he just seems to play very upright. Like what i have seen from wright but haven't seen alot of varco i am sorry to say so can't comment.

As far as FA i think realistically a low 2 high 3 might be had for Hoyer but i don't think we'll be trading Mallet any time soon his talent was a bit of a steal for where we got him.

Offense: WW is main priority for WR, VJax would be great but i don't see us spending the $ on 2 top WR's. I can see us staying with Ocho, Branch and WW with a draft pick mixed in for Offense. I can however see the possibility of us letting BJGE walk if the $ are too high which would see us pick up a low round/FA RB of the bruiser mold in the draft.

Defense: The best Safety out there would be my priority if we don't believe there is one in the draft. Finnegan would be nice to but as you said i don't know about the $ after signing Mayo to a new contract as well.

Love the thoughts tho always good to see where other fans heads are at combining draft and FA

Random Blasphemy VII ~ Tight Ends!!

1 ~ It's no secret that I am obsessed with Tight Ends ~ Flex Ends + Wing Backs, to be specific.

NE has 2 TEs, we play way too much 2/3 TE formation to not find another TE drafty who can start right away.

2 ~ I believe that the more options your 11 offer you, the deadlier your Offense is.

Nate Solder might not play tackle in the near future. He might just play TE and tackle forever, we need to draft a future tackle. Let Nate be the man he is (depth at tackle and TE.)

3 ~ There is no position on the Offense that offers the Deadly Duality that Flex Ends and Wing Backs do.

Finding depth at TE would be great for NE.

4 ~ I also find Wide Receivers vastly overrated, one-dimensional, and extremely risky to spend heavy Draft Capital on.

We need to find the next Wes Welker.

5 ~ Furthermore, WideOuts usually take 2 or 3 years to incubate ~ to contribute substantially.

So do offensive line men.

6 ~ Tight Ends, on the other hand...tend to get On Line rapidly.

So long as they are capable of blocking.

7 ~ I know I'm virtually all alone on this, but I'm gonna keep pounding the table, baby!!

I want more tight ends in NE.

8 ~ What I want is to draft Wing Backs Coby Fleener and Michael Egnew!!

We need to draft what ever gives us the ability to run the ball better. I want a younger o-line.

9 ~ HELL...I want Evan Rodriguez on Day 3, as well!! :rocker:

I don't watch collage football.

10 ~ I believe that those guys would start rocking immediately, just like Aaron + Gronk did.

More TE would be good for the team in the near future as well as in the long run.

***

I see the Tight End Complex as doing nothing short of revolutionizing the game.

BB would go down as an offensive genius if he implemented the magic 3 and won a SB.

IF somebody in power sees it the same way.

The message is to short if I use your quote, so I had to write this.

And I agree.

Heh!! Excellent Flow of Thought, Brother Penn...

I believe the direction of your thoughts is correct: Plugging Holes is not merely ineffective, but actually courts disaster, as it tempts one to persuade one's self that a square peg is a round peg...as a result of which we not only end up missing a great Opportunity elsewhere, but end up still missing that round peg.

I've allways felt that if you consistently prioritize Grizzlies on both sides of the line, the Defensive Front 7, and QB ~ those 13 Positions ~ then you impact the team so disproportionately with those guys that your Championship Quest can go a long way with relative JAGS at the other 39 spots.

It All Starts In The Trenches, baby.

I agree that WW is the priority - injury aside he is a no risk pick up (and should be F-Tagged if need be).

Branch can walk - he is on a whacking great salary i think.

I like V.Jax as a receiver because we have become a "mis-match" offence. WW is too fast, nimble and precice, and the Gronk is to big, fast and strong! Adding V.Jax would give us a guy who can stretch the field on occasion, and can reach over the top of the DB's to get the ball.

As for a FA Safety - we need a leader in the defensive backfield - that is what we should get. If we can pick up another pass-rusher that would also be a good thing.

What do you think we can get for Mallett down the stretch?

I couldn't be a carpenter today, it rained, so I started to post and it just grew. OOPS..

Its tough watching the defense this year, there was a lot of hope in the preseason. The front 4 looked to be dominate, and I felt the pressure from the d-line, would help our young DBs in the passing game. Now in week 13 its obvious that we are too banged up to stop even a 1st year starter at QB, and even if we weren't banged up we don't have any experience in the back field to stop much, and the front 4 cannot move the pocket in a way which would benefit their ability to put pressure on the QB.

It would be reasonable for us to draft needs on the defense. It would be great to get a pass rush, and try to find some better cover guys at FS, SS, CB and at LB. But thats a whole lot of wishing. What people are proposing is an overhaul of the defense. People even feel as BB would attempt to play a 3-4 next year. I don't see it.

Our core players are not experienced enough to play the 3-4, and I don't even think we have the talent on the defensive side of the ball to play 3-4.

In order to get back to the good old days, we would need to find at least 2 good line backers who can fall in to coverage and actually block a pass. WE would need 2 smart DE who are experienced enough to fill gaps, forcing running backs to freelance out to the side lines. And, we need 2 smart safeties, who can impact the run game as well as to make sure receivers don't find their way deep, 1 on 1 with a corner. And thats just to start.

All of this isn't coming out of the draft and even if BB did find a way to draft a defense it would be at least 2 or 3 years before they played up to BB's standards. You will not see BB blitz much if he knows his team is incapable of picking up the open receivers.

So yeah the defense is a work in progress and until BB finds players worth building a defense around, you will not see much progress on that side of the ball. We win with the offense so if we don't continue to add depth around Brady, things will get worse quickly.

For example we play a 2/3 TE formation so often its shocking to know we only carry 2 TEs on this team. Thats risky if you ask me. If Arron and Gronk go down to injury, thats the last time you will see the 2 TE formation, and it would be devastating to our run game.

What I hope BB does in this current draft. First, improve the run game. We have a lot of depth at RB, they even have talent. Right now NE is ranked 21st at running the ball, its was not long ago that we were ranked 10th in the league. If BB stuck to the running game the numbers would be better, but we have Brady and so its not shocking that the offense would want Brady to throw as much as as he does. But...

Thats where the problem starts, teams play against Brady, not against the running game. Its shocking to see a run game only go for 4 or 5 yards when the defense is playing against the pass. Where are the huge gains on the ground that are common on teams that have effective run games. Its rare, really rare to see NE rush for 15 yards, even more rare to see a TD come from a 20+ rushing gain.

I think the problem with the run game starts with the o-line, and our inability to get blockers down field to pick up potential tacklers. Now its tough to claim where improvement can be made. Nate might take over for Light. Cannon might take over of waters. Koppen might be healthy next year. Its a mixed bag between too young, too old and the fact that the unit hasn't play much together on the field.

WE have even brought in some FA to fill voids on the o-line, who knows if BB likes these guys enough to keep them on the team next year, at least until the roster is cut down to 52.

The problem with the run game might not even be a player issue, it could just be a coaching issue, or our running scheme just doesn't allow the big gain.

Brady is getting older and he will need a more effective run game if he wishes to prolong his tenure in this league. So something needs to change. There are many people on this forum who feel that the TE formations might be the answer. More TEs on the field, means more blockers. I feel they are right and would support their claims.

Nate Solder has even shown an ability to get down field and lay blocks on DBs and line backers when he is in at TE on the 3 TE formation. If Nate becomes a starter at tackle, we loose his ability to play TE. Nate is a great player. I think it would be best if we drafted an additional tackle, let Nate be the versatile player he is. He adds depth for the o-line when an injury comes along, and when a situation calls for him to play TE, we have the ability to get him involved in the run game. In the short term it will have a big impact. In the long term, who knows, he might eventually just play tackle in place of Light when that time comes.

Its apparent to me that BB will need to address the depth at TE. So some how he will need to address that. Getting it done in FA would be much harder than it would be to do it early in the draft, but the kid would have to be coached up to be a starter on this team. Directly he would have to have instinctual blocking skills and power, if he wants to take Nate's job. BB has brought in many TEs, even Robs brother, Dan Gronkowski, but in the end BB gave Nate the roll. Which mean to me that if you can't block as a TE and create running lanes, you will not be in NE long.

In the end I see BB picking up a tackle and a good pass catching run blocking TE in the 1st round. In the 2nd round we pick up another corner/ safety and a center. The 3rd round pick would be a wide receiver. The majority of the defensive issues would be addressed after the first 3 rounds.

I see BB playing a 4-3 defense next year. More 2/3 TE formations, with a better commitment to the run game.

The only picks I care for is OT Riley Reiff, Iowa, and TE Dwayne Allen, Clemson
Having 1 Nate Solder is great having 2 is awesome.
RT and LT secure for the future.
Both Nate and Riley have played TE.
Allen brings good blocking to the team and he has good receiving hands. Good player in the red zone.

35. Bruce Irvin - OLB - West Va
36. Riley Reiff – OL – Iowa
37. Dwayne Allen - TE - Clemson

Here's a link to the AFCA all American team. Somethings that caught my eye:

Konz over Brewster for C.

WR Jordan White from Western Michigan. 6-0 215. Never heard of him but could be a nice sleeper.

Mark Barron S Ala makes team. Also a team captain, playa for Saban and has nice size.

Kheeston Randal gets beaten out by teammate Okafor for best DL on Texas.

Jerel Worthy only 300+ lb DL on team.

Lamichael James 1 of 2 players to make team 2 straight years. Would take a flier on him.

Here is my latest attempt.

This has to be a draft that prioritises defense and I see much better value in rounds 2-3 for the Patriots than in round one. This is a draft where we may well embrace trading back. To that end:

1A

Traded for Washington's second and fourth. The Redskins, having drafted RGIII in the first trade up for his partner in crime Kendall wright.

1B

Traded for Steelers' 1st, 4th, 6th

Steelers trade up (with our defense, it's more likely the Steelers will be in the superbowl than ourselves ) to snag Dont'a Hightower ahead of the Ravens.

1C (The Steelers pick)

DE/DT/OLB Melvin Ingram S Carolina

Ingram is athletic, versatile and talented enough to be used in different ways on all three downs.

2A (From Redskins)

S Mark Barron Alabama

The complaint will be that he's not good enough in coverage. My reply would be that almost anyone would be better than what we've got right now. Barron is intelligent and a film rat, traits BB will love. He's a plus for our run defense, I imagine can contribute on special teams and is an upgrade on what we have manning the safety positions right now. I'd prefer to take him later but there are a lot of teams out there looking for safeties and I think Barron is the most BB-friendly of them.

2B

DT Fletcher Cox Mississippi St.

Defensive lineman of the week four times in the defense heavy SEC must mean something. Still a touch raw but has lots of upside. An inside pass rusher initially and at 6'4" and 295lb's could project as a 5-tech in the future.

2C

CB Cameron Hayward Vanderbilt

Excellent in zone coverage, had success covering SEC receivers. Also a good tackler, saw him take down Trent Richardson 1 on 1. Somehow, someway, we need to find a secondary that can, you know, cover a receiver.

3

DE/OLB Cam Johnson Virginia

At 6'4" and 270lb's could he be an elephant backer?

4A (from Redskins)

WR Greg Childs Arkansas

Got to go offense eventually right. I would love Childs to be a Patriot providing he checks out medically. Seems like a perfect Patriot type guy.

4B

MLB Emmanuel Acho Texas

Excellent value if available at this spot. Very good coverage MLB that can tackle too.

4C (from Steelers)

DE/DT Derek Wolfe Cincinnati

A potential 5-tech getting a lot of buzz. Good value at this point.

6 (from Steelers)

S Tramain Thomas Arkansas

Doesn't have outstanding measurables but I've only seen positives written about him.

This will probably be far from my final attempt at a mock but I've been compelled to make it out of frustration at some no-name from Indianapolis and Rex Grossman at times making our ordinary defense look even moreso. I think there's equally good defensive talent in the second and third rounds as there is in our end of the first. Unless BB loves Upshaw, Hightower or Kendall Wright, I think trading both our firsts back into the second is the best route as of now. And if you don't like the names I've selected then you can have some equally good alternatives (I'd have loved to select Vinny Curry for example).

This draft might not be good enough to substantially improve the play of our defense but it could be the basis for our defense of the future.

Right, I am going to have another go at a mock. Using NEP Big board as of now, and the below picks. In my scenario, we trade Hoyer for a 2013 #2nd rounder.

In this scenario, our free agency activities mean there is no "need" for a WR, we also get a veteran at S and LB. We do not loose any "key" personel.

First Round

No. 27.
New England Patriots TRADE this pick with the Redskins for a 2013 #1st round, and a high second in 2012 (#39 OVR). The Redskins select WR Sanu to pair with new franchise QB (RGIII).

No. 31
New England Patriots TRADE this pick with Seattle for 2013 ~1st and a 2012 Second (#45 OVR). Seattle use the pick to select Landry Jones, QB, OAK).

Second Round

No. 39
Jared Crick, DE, Nebraska. Crick has fallen out of the first round due to his Pectoral injury, and allows BB to make a value pick at the top of the second. He will eventually become a starter in the Pats 3-4 allignment, and can slip inside next to Vince when the Pats switch to 4-3.

No. 45
Peter Konz, OC, Wisconsin. Completes the re-tooling of the Pats starting O-line. A Line of Solder-Mankins-Konz-Cannon-Vollmer will start the 2013 season. In the meantime, Waters, Light and Koppen remain involved in protecting Brady.

No. 55 (trade up using pick 4)
Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas. Due to a Veteran FA pick up, Vaccaro has time to settle and develop within the rotation.

No. 63
Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois. Has fallem to the pats, who make another value selection on a pass-rusher.

Third Round
No. 94

Donte Paige-Moss, DE/OLB, UNC. Another Value selection. DPM should have stayed in school and worked towards the 2013 draft, but he decided to declare anyway. He finds himself in a good situation and is allowed to develop as a 3-4 OLB.

The draft strategy here was to look to pick up a number of picks and try to address some of the obviousl problems on defence. I am of the opinion that we have invested so much Draft Stock in the CB position, and in McCourty, Ras-I and Arrington we have 3 good corners, they should be given the opportunity to suceed next to decent Safety play, and a strong front 7. The object of this draft was to improve the starting front 7, and increase the quality depth. The offence, will run its self whilst TFB, WW, Gronk are in play behind that O-Line. Allowing for the growth of Vereen and Ridley the Pats also have a solid run game to work on.

This leaves the Patriots sitting on a Draft Bounty in 2013, with three first round picks, two second, a third and a fourth rounder. The huge amount of draft stock there can be used to draft "home run" key pieces moving forward post 2012.

How bout we draft K. Wright if he's available? Deion Branch isn't playing forever. We need an influx of speed at that position too.
I want to stick with the 4-3. Re-up Andre Carter.Going to need to add de and olb and S.

1A DE - Melvin Ingram - DE - So Carolina - Former rb runs like a lb. And, our defense needs speed/athleticism everywhere. He'd be a good start. Productive in the highly competitive SEC. Other possibilities include; Mercilus, Curry, Perry, Jenkins.

1B WR - Kendal Wright - WR - Baylor - Can stretch the field. I don't think we need a big wr. Just a fast one. Aaron Hernandez is really a wr. When does he line up and block someone on the LOS?

2A S - Robert Lester - Alabama - Hope he comes out. There are some other possibilities here; Vaccarro, Thomas, Martin. I'd draft Vinny Curry here if he fell and double up at that position. Get a S later.

2B DE - Andre Branch - Clemson - Want to double up this position.
Can never have enough pass rushers in this new age NFL.

3 OLB - Nigel Bradham - Florida St - Came around later in the year. Will take the occasional dumb penalty. I think we can coach that out of him. Team captain and plays special teams.

4 CB - I like a couple of backups. Ron Brooks at LSU and Menzie at Alabama. Want to see their workouts. Each is playing behind a pair of 1st rounders. Claiborne and Mathieu at LSU. Kirpatrick and Milliner at Bama. Both teams play nickel a lot with the spread. So, they're really starters.

I know we'll probably trade down. But, dang we have a lot of work to do on that defense. We're on our 4th center this year and have hardly noticed. I'd love a later round guy. But, not as big a need as many think. Especially, if we keep Koppen.

@Dobbo

I hope you are right but I think you are being a little ambitious thinking we can get a 2013 1st out of the Redskins who only move up 10 spots. However I like your thinking on the Redskins as a potential trade partner - I had the same.

While I don’t have a mock in place my official binkies are (in no particular order):

Quinton Coples
Kenny Tate
Bacarri Rambo
Ryan Broyles
Greg Childs
Marvin McNutt
Michael Williams (Alabama)
Senio Kelemete

I want ALL of them
