Random Blasphemy...

1 ~ Considering the harsh difficulty of finding "34" Flankers ~ OutSide LineBackers, to you Earthlings ~ who can actually Rush the Passer, Set the Edge, AND fluidly Cover the Pass...and considering that when such FREAKS come around, they generally go Top 5 or Top 10, particularly now that EVERYBODY'S playing the "34"...you can count me as 1000% behind the notion of switching to a "43" Base...to such as extent as we HAVE a "Base", of course.

2 ~ Even taking an unfettered "43" approach to the Draft, I'm having an hard time finding Defensive Ends of Elite Caliber available, either at our likely range, or even within striking distance...Last year, we had three such guys ~ those obviously being Aldon Smith, Robert Quinn, and Ryan Kerrigan ~ and all were gone by #14. This year, "Merciless" Whitney Mercilus, Vinny Curry, Devin Taylor, and Donte Moss seem like viable candidates, but it seems to me that, should any or all of them emerge as "Elite", they will most certainly follow the path of last year's trio, meaning we'd have to pay a King's Ransom to trade up to #12 or so to get them, OR spend a top Pick on someone we're less than sure of.

3 ~ Quint Coples is a unique player with the capacity to add or lose weight and play Defensive End in either the "43" or the "34", but of course he's already at an Elite level, and I highly doubt his "slippage" takes him out'f the Top 10.

4 ~ Trading from, say, the #24 to #28 range to about #12 can be expected to cost us both a 2nd Rounder AND a 3rd Rounder...Trading Up is a valid philosophical position to take, but those who advocate it should just keep that reality in mind: Such harsh prices are usually what it takes, as Falcon fans learned, last April.

5 ~ There are a number of guys who I like as developmental Mid Round "43" Defensive Ends ~ Shea McClellin, Trevor Guyton, Malik Jackson, Tyrone Crawford, and perhaps Andre Branch and some others...With Andre Carter, Mark Anderson, and Jermaine Cunningham in the fold, as well as other guys like Brandon Deaderick, I at least want to keep my mind open to passing on the earlier rounders in favor of spending light, Mid Round Capital on these kinds of guys, developing substantial Depth of Talent, while hoping that some of them make that Quantum Leap to Greatness, while we continue to maneuver for juicier 1st Rounders, going forward...Of course, were a Clay Matthews to fall into our lap, again ~ and if we are indeed employing a "43" Base ~ then that would be a VERY different story!!...I'm just not entirely confident ~ at this point in time ~ about the top level of "43" Defensive End talent in this Draft...But I reserve the right to change my mind!!

6 ~ And of course there're always UFA's!! My favorite projected Late Round ~ UFA is Scott Smith of Texas Tech!! When all is said and done, he could be the best'f'm!!

Or he could, you know...crap OUT!! :bricks:

Random Blasphemy II...

1 ~ At first, I was all hot and heavy about "The Ravin'" Dontari Poe as a Super Beast "34" Defensive End...and I STILL AM, mind you...But I have now officially defected to the "43" Dark Side...and it feels GOOD, baby!! As such, I have to wonder: Can the 6.5 Poe make the most of his considerable skills at D Tackle, next to Vince Wilfork?? Also...with The Ascension of Kyle Love "Hurts", and the potential ascension of Ron Brace ~ I don't know if anyone else feels this way ~ as a pretty sweet rotational Tackle with Wilfork and Love, not to mention the presence of the excellent though brittle Myron Pryor, and even Gerard Warren...IS Defensive Tackle, much as I worship the position, the BEST place to expend Draft Capital at this point??

2 ~ Addendum to that: Alameda Taamu. LOVE this guy. BEAST. VERY natural as a Defensive Tackle, unlike Poe, who's a bit too tall for the gig, in my view...ALSO unlike Poe, who's Stock continues to rise, Brother Taamu's seems to be sliding...enticingly so...And while I LIKE Kyle Love "Hurts" as a starting D Tackle, I LOVE him as a #3, behind a potentially APOCALYPTIC tandem of Wilfork and Taamu!!

3 ~ Hebron Fangupo. Another one of Wes Bunting's finds. A NASTY Nose Guard to keep in mind.

Random Blasphemy III

1 ~ I absolutely love Courtney Upshaw as a potential Sam in a "43", and would have to consider him at #24, or wherever the Saints Pick comes in...But one must also ask oneself how MUCH of an upgrade over Rob Ninkovich he would be...Because let me tell you: I've been on the rather tiny Ninkovich BandWagon for a LONG time, and the more I see, the more I LIKE.

2 ~ I see us as having no less than FOUR talented Starting Caliber "43" MidFielders + Flankers ~ ILB's and OLB's to you Earthlings!! ~ in Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Rob Ninkovich, and Dane Fletcher...So, much as I love all THREE of Luke Kuechly, Manti Teo, AND Vontaze Burfict, I'm having an hard time justifying heavy early round expenditure on those positions, at this point.

Random Blasphemy IV

1 ~ Finally, I must say that ~ outside of the early 1st Round guys ~ I see very few early round Secondary Prospects that inspire me with overwhelming confidence. For my money, you can KEEP pretty much the ENTIRE Strong Safety and Free Safety Class...And while there are many intriguing Corners, a lot of them have dubious Verticity ~ Turn + Burn Acuity, Earthlings!! ~ and fit far better in a Cover 2 than in our System, which plays a lot of Man.

2 ~ That being said, there are a number of Corners that I like at their projected Market Value...Stephon Gilmore is an early favorite of mine, though if Ras I Dowling's working out, next year, I'd like Gilmore to be our new Free Safety.

3 ~ As far as a pure Corner goes, my current favorite is Jamell Fleming.

4 ~ Robert Golden I love as potential Rover on the "425" Heavy Nickle.

5 ~ And Desmond Marrow I absolutely LOVE as a UFA and developmental potential PRO BOWLER!!

...And, yes, I want them all!! :rocker:

Lets make this draft interesting including a surprising trade
1a. Devon Still - DT- Penn State
1b. Courtney Upshaw - LB - Alabama
2a. Mark Barron - S - Alabama
2b. Trade for LeSean Jackson and Eagles 3rd round pick. 2nd pick is currently #62 and Eagles 3rd is #71. Jackson could be just like Moss and need a change of scenery but more important the Pats could get both a WR and PR all star from a team that has to get rid of him. Long shot but it may happen.
3a. Mike Webster - C -Ohio State
This draft gets a DL, LB, Safety, WR and Center.

Whose LeSean Jackson? Desean Jackson is a free agent after this season anyway and with all the stupid things he's done this season along with the drops, I hope he doesn't think he's getting paid like a #1.:lol2:

Sorry about the spelling mistakeSince he has done some stupid things he may be at a bargain price. I thought of the trade thinking we could get a receiver and only drop 9 spots. The Eagles may be willing to take anything right now and his agent is Drew Rosenhaus who is on good terms with the Pats.

1. David DeCastro- really good guard but can also play center.
2a. Brandon Jenkins LB FSU
3. Fletcher Cox DE/DT Miss State/ SEC Defensive Player of the week for 4 weeks this year - something like that. 6'4" 295
3b. Xavier Rhodes CB - FSU
3c. Jarius Wright WR - Ark
4. Harrison SMith S- Notre Dame
6. Greg Childs WR - Ark

obvoiusly there are trades in there.

Who's Mike Webster - C - Ohio St? Are you picking on ninja for his fascination with Mike Brewster? Whom some think is the next Mike Webster? I'm down with Still and Upshaw. We're on track to draft 28 and 29. Assume we lose AFCCG and NO loses at SF. I don't think either of your guys fall that far. I think they both go before 20 in fact. One can hope though. My early scenario to cause board meltdown will be

1a Peter Konz - C - Wisconsin - Konz will be inarguably the best player on the board. Nitwits like me will be screaming for help on the front 7 on defense.

1b trade down - Board goes into annual draft night meltdown. Some team trades us their 2nd in 2012 and 1st in 2013. Maybe Seattle

2a Billy Winn - DE - Boise St - Can play a two gap in the 3-4

2b Andre Branch DE/OLB - Clemson - Just a hunch

2c Joe Adams - WR - Arkansas - Kid with that sic punt return. He's gonna kill the 3-cone drilll at the combine and prob run about 4.4

3a traded for 2nd in 2013

3b Kenny Vaccaro - S - Texas

And, in a surprising day 3 trade. We deal Ryan Mallett to Cleveland for their 1st in 2013 and 5th in 2012. Cleveland gets their playmakers this year. T. Richardson and M. Floyd. Realizes they don't have a qb to get the ball downfield and voila we have a match made in heaven.

Wow, some good stuff here. Lots to respond too!

I completely agree. The ideal 4-3 RE is basically the ideal 3-4 ROLB, but without the coverage responsibilities. The ideal 4-3 LOLB is basically the 3-4 LOLB, but with more covering and less rushing. And a 4-3 DT is light years easier to draft than a 3-4 DE. And the result on the field has been similar. Very bad at its worst, pretty good at its best.
1 ~ At first, I was all hot and heavy about "The Ravin'" Dontari Poe as a Super Beast "34" Defensive End...and I STILL AM, mind you...But I have now officially defected to the "43" Dark Side...and it feels GOOD, baby!! I have a pretty similar opinion there. There's enough talent and enough bodies to make things work. Love is a decent NFL starter. Pryor was playing very well before he got hurt, and he's probably the best of the bunch outside of Wilfork. One guy to keep an eye on is Mike Martin out of Michigan. He sounds like the kind of "lunch pail" kind of guy you want on the DL, but isn't flashy enough for today's NFL to go any earlier than the 4th.

I've decided to wait until the combine to worry about 4-3 Sam prospects. So much of that spot is dropping into coverage, but it's hard to get a good idea of dropping potential until you see a guy do exactly what you'd want him to do in the NFL. Teo is probably my favorite SLB prospect followed by Upshaw and then Hightower, but combine drills and 3-cone/shuttle times will clear things up.
4 ~ Robert Golden I love as potential Rover on the "425" Heavy Nickle.
I haven't seen a ton of him, but as a guy with safety and CB experience, he caught my eye. Definitely a guy on my radar in the mid rounds.

I'm a huge fan of these 3 moves. The Pats need to trade for a first next year so they get a chance at Tyrann Mathieu, the Pats' future starting FS, and right now, the best part of this draft seems to be the late 2nd, early 3rd, so another pick there is great. I like Branch as a guy with the length and bulk to succeed as a DE for the Pats, and it's nice that he's finally put everything together on the field, with 10.5 sacks and 14 TFL this year. And it does make a ton of sense for Mallett to be traded, and getting a little in 2012 but a lot in 2013 is perfectly fine with me. And you make a really good point about Cleveland having a chance to completely redo their offense this offseason!

Mathieu is the most overrated POS in the entire SEC. Think about who he's covering. With two great corners in his defensive backfield he has the teams 3rd best receiver and he still gets beat. The guy is good for at least 1 boneheaded play a game, and a good punt return every now and again. He's around the ball alot and he can make plays when he gets there but at 5'8 (seriously doubt he's even 5'9) playing FS is a real stretch.

Well feel free to replace him with your favorite 2013 safety draft prospect. Another guy I like as a safety conversion is David Amerson, who has 11 picks this year at CB for NC State as a true sophomore. And he's listed at 6'3"!

Great stuff, man...And: thanks.

1 ~ Good eye on Mike Martin. Doesn't have an ounce of talent in his body ~ well: maybe an OUNCE ~ but, as you say: a "Lunch Pail" guy, and we can never have too many of THEM...A SCRAPPER, as I like to put it, and definitely a Patriots Guy that should go on Day 3. NICE call.

2 ~ Couldn't agree with you more on the MidFielders ~ and many others ~ about waiting on The Combine to put their Verticity ~ that's Turn + Burn Acuity, Earthlings!! ~ and many other vital attributes under the microscope!!

Another guy I like as a safety conversion is David Amerson, who has 11 picks this year at CB for NC State as a true sophomore. And he's listed at 6'3"!

3a. Mike Webster - C -Ohio State

This draft gets a DL, LB, Safety, WR and Center.

1 ~ You think the Eagles would give us Jackson JUST for swapping #62 for #71??? You have LOST it, my friend!!

There's a pretty good chance that Jackson would cost a 1st Rounder AND a 2013 2nd Rounder!!

2 ~ I APPLAUD your choice of Mike Webster as your Center, in Round 3.

Indeed, I don't think ANYONE would argue that Mike Webster isn't a good fit for that position.

However, at 59 years of age, his best days MIGHT be behind'm.

Just.........sayin'.

obvoiusly there are trades in there.

Oh, MAN, that is a LOAD of fresh, new names!! :rocker:

1 ~ My admiration ~ and that of others ~ for Childs is well documented, of course.

2 ~ Above all, David DeCastro is Priority 1 for me, this coming April, as is also well documented...But I believe ~ apologies if I've forgotten someone!! ~ that this is the first Mock I've seen ~ aside from my own excessive private notes!! ~ with him as the first Pick!! Well DONE, sir!!

Nice haul with the first 3 picks. Especially getting Lesean Jackson. Did they clone a dual specimen of the two players?

Btw, Desean Jackson is a unrestricted free agent at the end of the season so I don't feel a need to swap draft picks.

Mike Webster was from Wisconsin.
