WR is a need now...

Patriots had prior visit with WR Furrey

With No. 3 receiver Jabar Gaffney signing with the Broncos in free agency, the Patriots could be seeking reinforcements. One name to keep on the radar is former Rams and Lions receiver Mike Furrey.

Furrey visited with the Patriots at Gillette Stadium prior to the start of free agency. The visit came early because Furrey was released by the Lions Feb. 9, and thus didn't have to wait until Friday to sign with another club.

Furrey, who had a career-high 98 catches in 2006, has yet to sign with any team at this point.

The timing of Furrey's visit adds important context to the situation.

Teams that bring in players on the first day of free agency are generally aggressive in trying to sign them. This appears to be a case in which the Patriots did their due diligence, and could potentially have interest at some point, but nothing appears imminent.

Add me to the Robiskie bandwagon late day 1.

How about Mike Thomas (Arizona) on day 2??

I for one am definitely looking forward to the draft simply to see what WR we take. Because this WR shortage is setting up nicely come late April. Anyone who's been able to watch combine coverage may agree that WR is probably the best and deepest position in the draft. Lots of good day 1 talent and beyond. Personally, Id love to see us add Brian Robiskie from Ohio State. He already plays like a veteran, he's big, smooth, runs great routes and his old man is an NFL coach, so he obviously has a high football IQ. And of course there are other great WRs in the draft. But that kid is definitely on my personal short list. But "best available" player at many points in this coming draft is going to be a WR.

Did you ever think that maybe that was why Belichick looked to add players at other positions, first?

The Draft blocking TEs look poor, hence Baker. The Draft Rbs looked unimpressive, hence Taylor.
The Draft CBs looked poor, hence the courting of Bodden.

Maybe a pattern there?

Another query, Was he talking to Boddenas a CB, or a Lewis Sanders type CB/ Safety, that he described the position evolving into, at the Combine?

I love Mike Thomas, but I don't see him as a fit outside, and doubt very much he makes it to day 2.

LOVE Mike Wallace. Returns kicks, too. Though I agree (and hope) that NE doesn't take a WR on Day One, I hope they start looking early on Day Two. Not too many solid number threes can be found as UDFAs, especially with a Pats scheme that seems to require some experience.

My current hope is that we get a 4th round comp pick and we end up using our 2 4th round picks on DT Sammie Lee Hill from Spillman and Wallace at WR. I think Wallace could really turn in to something special. As a value, I like him better than any WR in this class not named Crabtree.

And one I completely agree with. Robiskie has TJHoush potential as a versatile, reliable possession type guy. If we were to steal him in the 2nd round, Id be doing cartwheels.

I view him as a mixture of Hines Ward and David Givens. I'd be doing cartwheels as well.:singing:

I'm not buying this idea that the draft at those positions is poor. This draft is very very deep. I see strength at the DB and RB positions in particular, the TE position is mediocre.

Now that we got rid of Vrabel i think we will grab an OLB/DE in the first round im hoping for a pass rusher like aaron maybin!!

Michael Clayton

He was very productive as a rookie.

He could fill Jabar's Role maybe even exceed with some coaching.

I like Jordan Norwood the best of the 3 PSU WRs.

He has good athleticism, remarkable hands, runs excellent routes. His father is a WRs coach and now the offensive coordinator at Baylor U. He grew up knowing the position.

He is NOT fast, and may not get drafted, but I see him as Bobby Engram #2. his great athleticism is in terms of quickness, nimble feet and excellent leaping ability.

Ventrone?

Heywood Bey is a revisit of Bethl and Jackson, Fast in a straight line. Track man in a football uniform. Maclin and maybe Crabtree are the gold, and way too rich for the Pats picks or needs.

The one thing that Moss has was 4.2 speed as well as that body control/hands. He will play like Marvin Harrison and be effective until he is 36, or 37 baring injury.

I totally agree about DHB being Chad Jackson version II. Don't want any part of him. From what I've seen on Maclin he doesn't run very precise routes. I don't see the "gold" there. Crabtree, yes, but it aint going to happen.

Well, fast in a straight line or not, his change of direction numbers aren't too bad: 4.18 short shuttle, 6.80 3-cone

Clayton would be a nice pickup if the price is right. Although his numbers have been down since his rookie year, he does other things very well (i.e., run blocking, special teams play.)

I like the idea of Clayton as a big possession WR - along with a day 2 speedster in the draft to develop and help stretch the field - if the price is right.

Don't you mean 'if brains translated' he'd have made several pro bowls by now?

And what evidence is there to suggest that DHB has any more brains (or heart) than Chad Jackson?

You're usually more fair than this. The kid got hosed in New England, by the fans as much as by the team. Then the poor guy finds a team and latches on, only to have his former O.C. end up as the head coach there.

The man must be thinking that he's been cursed.
