I'm not going to make excuses because neither Brady, Belichick, nor the team will make excuses - but let's also keep in mind that the game conditions did NOT help.
One can always second guess play calling but again conditions are a factor in that - and even if you're in conditions where the running game should be expected to be the go-to play, from a strategic standpoint you still need to mix it up (knowing that incompletions will often result) just to keep defenses honest.
I'll take an ugly "gift" of a win, as it's better to be 2-0 rather than 1-1 or 0-2
Even if we were 0-2 our playoffs hopes would not be dashed - and I'd be reminding everyone that we we should all prefer to have the team peaking at full health come later in the season and the playoffs, rather than in September.
While the Globe's Wilbur is within his rights to call the offense "dreadful" - "dreadful" is also how I'd characterize his reporting:
"Why is Lloyd not here anyway?"
Um - I'm not a paid reporter, but given the fact that Lloyd was made an offer, it's because LLOYD doesn't WANT to be here or anywhere else. And the reason why he was cut in the first place should be something any decent reporter can understand.
"They decided to save a few bucks on Welker in favor of Amendola"
Um - no. Again, should I have to tell a REPORTER for the Patriots to get his facts straight?
Their offer to Welker was more than they offered Amendola. Welker CHOSE to take LESS money and go with the Broncos. His choice - so get your facts straight about that and know that Amendola's guaranteed money is only $6 million - which is not a bad risk to lock him up for 5 years.
"It is a decision the Patriots made that is only going to become more ominous as the season wears on, despite how ungrateful Patriots fans want to pound their chests over Welker’s dropped ball history during his time here."
Again, Welker made the decision to leave. The Patriots made the decision to offer him more than the Broncos and more than Amendola. Why can't this reporter use Google?
The fact of the matter is that despite Amendola's injury he MADE the key catches last week that Welker previously dropped even despite an injury. We have an extra win thanks to that.
“Less is more.”That is, unless you’re talking about receivers. More is more. More is better. It’s not complicated."
More... what? WRs? Can Belichick snap his fingers and prevent injuries? Has Wilbur looked around the NFL at teams like the Steelers or others and realized that there's a TON of injuries - potentially related to the CBA restriction on workouts allowing players to get into game shape?
It's not complicated - but apparently it is too complicated for Wilbur to understand.
Patriots' dreadful product is unwatchable - Boston Sports Blog - Boston.com
If and when the Patriots are approaching the playoffs in good shape (thanks in part to a 2-0 start) with key players returning rested and in good health, the panic of a sloppy, rainy, injury -limited game is going to make chicken-little reporters and fans look pretty silly.
