Worst Offensive Performance in Recent Memory

they didn't have tom brady.

No they did not. The Pats started three quarterbacks that year: Marc Wilson (6 starts), the immortal Tommy Hodson (6 starts) and 37-year-old Steve Grogan (4 starts).

They also didn't have Bill Belichick. 1990 was the year of one Rodney A. Rust who came in with some fanfare that he was going to install the "Air Coryell" offense.

When I google images of Rod Rust, here's what I get:

I'm not going to make excuses because neither Brady, Belichick, nor the team will make excuses - but let's also keep in mind that the game conditions did NOT help.

One can always second guess play calling but again conditions are a factor in that - and even if you're in conditions where the running game should be expected to be the go-to play, from a strategic standpoint you still need to mix it up (knowing that incompletions will often result) just to keep defenses honest.

I'll take an ugly "gift" of a win, as it's better to be 2-0 rather than 1-1 or 0-2

Even if we were 0-2 our playoffs hopes would not be dashed - and I'd be reminding everyone that we we should all prefer to have the team peaking at full health come later in the season and the playoffs, rather than in September.

While the Globe's Wilbur is within his rights to call the offense "dreadful" - "dreadful" is also how I'd characterize his reporting:

"Why is Lloyd not here anyway?"

Um - I'm not a paid reporter, but given the fact that Lloyd was made an offer, it's because LLOYD doesn't WANT to be here or anywhere else. And the reason why he was cut in the first place should be something any decent reporter can understand.

"They decided to save a few bucks on Welker in favor of Amendola"

Um - no. Again, should I have to tell a REPORTER for the Patriots to get his facts straight?

Their offer to Welker was more than they offered Amendola. Welker CHOSE to take LESS money and go with the Broncos. His choice - so get your facts straight about that and know that Amendola's guaranteed money is only $6 million - which is not a bad risk to lock him up for 5 years.

"It is a decision the Patriots made that is only going to become more ominous as the season wears on, despite how ungrateful Patriots fans want to pound their chests over Welker’s dropped ball history during his time here."

Again, Welker made the decision to leave. The Patriots made the decision to offer him more than the Broncos and more than Amendola. Why can't this reporter use Google?

The fact of the matter is that despite Amendola's injury he MADE the key catches last week that Welker previously dropped even despite an injury. We have an extra win thanks to that.

“Less is more.”That is, unless you’re talking about receivers. More is more. More is better. It’s not complicated."

More... what? WRs? Can Belichick snap his fingers and prevent injuries? Has Wilbur looked around the NFL at teams like the Steelers or others and realized that there's a TON of injuries - potentially related to the CBA restriction on workouts allowing players to get into game shape?

It's not complicated - but apparently it is too complicated for Wilbur to understand.

Patriots' dreadful product is unwatchable - Boston Sports Blog - Boston.com

If and when the Patriots are approaching the playoffs in good shape (thanks in part to a 2-0 start) with key players returning rested and in good health, the panic of a sloppy, rainy, injury -limited game is going to make chicken-little reporters and fans look pretty silly.

The 'angry face' emoticon' is the Internet equivalent of whining I would say.

Other side of the coin: Man I've been waiting for a game where the D consistently made big stops.

I didn't put the angry face emoticon on there. I don't even know how to do that.

No, because we LOSE those games.
I know people find it hard to accept but a punt is actually better than an Int

question was not the worst game performance. it was worst offensive performance.

we won because of our defense, not offense.

this performance was brutal because of too many dropsies, bad play calling, bad communication, running wrong routes, brady wasn't sharp, etc. it had everything going.

some of those bad brady performances weren't this bad.

Yup the overall offensive numbers are ugly, but I'd rather be looking at ugly numbers and be up 2-0 in the record books then looking at pretty numbers and being down 0-2 to start the season.

The story of the season has really been the Pats defense. They have stepped up in these 'ugly wins' and without them we wouldn't be where we are so far. The offense is integrating a lot of new parts - a completely new WR and TE corps. So it's gonna take some time. Give it some time then.

If we're still looking bad by week 6, then I'd start to worry. I'd say we are fortunate to be up 2-0 at this point and I'm happy with that as long as we continue to show incremental improvement going forward.

OP states "recent memory", posters bring up games from a decade ago and the 90's....

Fact of the matter is, if this was any other 2 teams we'd be sitting here talking about how pitiful both teams looked offensively and how they are in no way shape or form superbowl contenders. I'll gladly take 2-0 given the circumstances but lets not act like we'd be 2-0 against teams without rookie QB's. Amendola and Gronk need to come back ASAP because I don't think we beat the bucs playing like we did.

The numbers themselves are U-G-L-Y.

- 9 first downs. That's right. Nine.
- 4-18 on third downs. 22.2% conversion rate.
- 232 total yards.
- 3.6 yards per play.
- Brady: 19-39 (48.7%) - Those are Tebow numbers.
- 2.3 yards per rush.
- 26 minutes of possession.

I can't remember a game where the Patriots' offense played worse. The only saving grace in this game is this number: 0 turnovers. No game-changing mistakes, fortunately.

I knew this would be a work in progress and that things would not look good early on. But this is worse than I thought. The injuries to Gronk, Vereen, and Amendola sure haven't helped. But my goodness, how many times last night did a young receiver either run the wrong route or simply drop a pass? A ton.

I thought Brady's numbers would suffer this year because of the young receivers. Yikes, has that proven to be true so far. His stats thus far:

52.7%, 473 yds, 3 td, 1 int

That is very un-Brady like.

They get 10 days to work on things. My hope is to somehow get by Tampa but see the young guys improve. If they don't improve, the Pats are in huge trouble. If they do, there's hope.

Brady's numbers so far, 2-0.

I actually expect them to be worse against Tampa bay in a week and a half because the Bucs have a much better run defense than the Jets, and they have a really good secondary. Unless Brady and his young receivers step it way way up they could be shut out.

Note-I am an optimist but if all the Bucs have to do is shut down Edelman then it is going to be the longest of days in Foxborough. Belichick is going to have to pull an unbeievable game plan out of his @ss and the players are going to have to be at their best.

Hopefully Gronk will be ready to go.

A whole two games ago I remember the Patriots turning the ball over three times while scoring 13 points, in a much more important game.

When the highest scoring Pat in fantasy is the defense, you know the world is upside down (fortunately, I was playing the Pats defense)

Brady's numbers so far, 2-0.

Barley eeking out a win over the helpless Jets and Bills and their never-played-a-game-before rookie quarterbacks is not something to be proud of. Relieved and feeling lucky, yes, but not proud. We were expected to kill these two teams and instead performed dismally against them.

I am proud of any win no matter how it's done.

It's about time today's Pats team learns how to win games like this. If this is the end of the Air Brady show then so be it. The Air Brady show got us 0 rings, a soul-crushing 18-1 SB loss, a second SB loss, and two embarrassing one and dones at home. Perhaps it's a good thing if this team is about to morph back into the gritty Pats who actually knew how to win in January and February back in the day...

That game was bad, but the Pats moved the ball up and down the field at will in that game. They just sputtered in the red zone. Last night the Pats couldn't do anything outside of that first drive.

I've been longing for the day when the defense was capable of carrying this team if need be. While I see good signs and I remain hopeful, I am cautious about it because the two teams we just played have very bad offenses.
