Wade will probably get a chance at FS this offseason but probably get cut by August.

I agree. IMO Mills is too slow to play the single high safety position. With Tampa Two or Thirds, Mills is fine, but he is not going to cover the whole field with his speed.

That’s a fair point, he’s never been the fastest guy. Even if he could be an okay safety, they’re thin at corner too so it just doesn’t make sense to rob that group to help another. It’ll be interesting to see how this is handled in the off-season, feels like the position has been a bit neglected.

CB has not been neglected, but safety I agree. Free safety has a lot of responsibility in the Pats defense so I am not sure if it works adding someone from the draft in Y1. I would think they would draft someone and immerse them for a year before they are ready to play a single high safety. DMac has 1 more year while they train someone?

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant safety, yes. I agree that it's definitely not as simple as just drafting somebody. I wonder if they can manage to keep DMac one more year and also bring back Duron Harmon for another layer.

If Devin is amenable, it would probably save them 2023 cap space to keep him since right now, all of his void years are hitting the cap for $9.7M in dead money. An extension turns a void year into a real year, so if he takes something like a $5M bonus and $1M 2023 salary then his 2023 cap hit would only be about $6.25M, a savings of around $3.5M (if my quick and shoddy napkin accounting is remotely accurate). Of course, he'd still have 3 void years left with a dead money hit of around $9M still in 2024.

in a perfect scenario we would have drafted a CB or S, let him learn from Dmac and take over this year, or maybe they are doing it this upcoming season. But i don't worry about our defensive backs as i think they are really well coached and even low round picks or udfa are coached up to play good with myles bryant the exception

Yes we always seem to have that Jordan Richards or Myles Bryant. Haha. Let's hope 2023 is different.

add slowjuan williams to that list, hopefully bryant and williams are not brought back, maybe bryant on Practice squad for ST and Safety insurance but please not cornerback.
I think we signed hayes to a 2 year contract which we signed late in the season didn't we?
I think FS and outside CB and our DB are set

Honestly... as much as Myles Bryant is the whipping boy for us here, the dude has been put into positions he really had no business being in. He was a UDFA a couple of years ago and his role should be as a depth corner, like your #4 or #5 guy. He generally knows his assignment and is in the right place but doesn't have the athleticism to make critical plays. But like, that's fine for a guy who should rarely see the field... at times this year he was the #2 corner (I think he was even the #1 corner with Mills, Jack and Marcus Jones all out in the Dolphins game??) which is way too much for him. I can't get that mad at him for being put in a position that he isn't capable of. You can't necessarily expect your 4th or 5th corner to be capable of stepping up and being a #1 corner against dudes like Tyreek Hill, and yet he honestly made some plays even despite that, but generally was overmatched which like, duh, of course he was, it's Myles Bryant.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. I otherwise do agree with your point that they coach their DBs well, I think Bryant is kind of an example of that since he went from bottom of the roster to #1 corner at times and it was not an absolute dumpster fire meltdown. Marcus Jones also made huge leaps from where he was in camp to where he was by end of season.

agreed good point, but even with the outside cb healthy and bryant covering the 4th WR like McKenzie from buffalo he got toasted, i feel qb like to attack him

Jack jones as well imo. phillips as well when he arrived here, dugger from D2 school too

Yeah Hayes was signed to a two year deal. He looked fine. Mills-Jack Jones-Marcus Jones-Hayes-Bryant could be OK. They probably do want to get a corner with a little size though and I wouldn't mind bringing Jonathan Jones back if his market isn't too hot. Or maybe after Staley gets fired, they dump JC Jackson and he scuttles back to NE.

Buffalo has a fleet of good athletic WRs though, that's a tough spot. And Allen buys so much time and things turn into school yard plays, that's when you need your CB to be athletic which isn't Bryant. I get it though. Good other recent examples of DBs for sure, Marcus Jones just seemed like someone whose recent development really jumped out. Dugger is a great example since he went from a raw D2 prospect to a guy making instinctual crazy pick 6 plays multiple times a season...

I would like a tall outside CB. Even Gilmore who has slowed down but can cover the taller slower receivers, not the smaller fast ones. We have DBs for the smaller fast ones. And a Defendive tackle to go with Barmore, like Payne from Washington.

if we for example draft a taller cb and resign JJ then i think we have invested too much in this position with Jack Jones, Marcus jones and Mills all can start at the CB position.

I hear ya, though Mills has spent time in camp and elsewhere at safety as well so he can flex a bit.

CB: Jon Jones - Jack Jones - Marcus Jones - drafted CB - Tae Hayes - Myles Bryant
FS: Mills - DMac for 1 year - Duron Harmon - drafted FS
SS: Dugger - Phillips - Peppers - Bledsoe

i could see that with a low day 2 or day 3 pick as the drafted CB, but if you put a first rd CB in there (because there are some taller CB in the draft looking really good and maybe available at 14) then it would be too top heavy imo, or at least not the asset allocation regarding priorities.

Agreed but not if we need a FS too.

Use FA for a taller CB, again Gilmore fits in instantly, a DT like Payne, and hopefully a fast LB for 3rd down (although BB never seems to do that).

Use the draft for all offense. OT times 2, WR, a TE to train, a center, maybe a free safety or fast LB if we did not sign one in FA.

i would prioritize it like you as well, OT and CB at the top with WR and FS, LB slight behind. The draft contains several OT worth a pick between 20-40 imo as well as taller CB's
LB and DT should be adressed via FA imo because WR and OT seems weak/not really guys i want for us

Agree... the WR and OT classes in FA are not good. I could see maybe one average tackle but eh. I'd probably throw a few draft picks at the position instead.

i am all about using 2 high picks on a LT and RT, let them fight out the 2 starting tackle positions with trent brown

I prefer a taller FA CB like Gilmore to avoid the learning curve with so many new CBs in the secondary.

OTs go fast in the draft. Hopefully a plug-and-play OT in Rd. 1 #14, and a developmental guy in Rd 3 or early Rd 4. I would support an OT in Rd 1 and 2.

This is totally correct.
