With All The NFL Injuries, Could Ryan Mallett Be Traded This Week?

I won't bother debating the many other points you brought up so that I can focus on the main issue.

You have to understand that most of the talent required by a QB is between the ears. The vast majority of us are not born with what it takes mentally to be a top-level QB. No matter how many physical skills you may have, without the mental ability - make that capability - to read defenses and make decisions in a split second, you'll never be a top-level NFL QB. The examples of this are legion.

Make no mistake about this, the capability of doing this is a God-given talent that few have. It is nurtured and developed just like many of the physical skills you comment on, but it is the critical talent in a QB. That's why the bottom rated talent in physical skills in 30 years of an NFL combine can be touted by some as the greatest of all time - because decision making is the defining attribute of an NFL QB.

So, it's all mental is it? Is that how Josh McDaniels became the best QB in the NFL?

Look, obviously, the mental aspect cannot be overlooked, and Brady knocks it out of the park. Mallett is an unknown in that area, although he is known to be the son of a coach, a student of the game and someone that was very successful playing against NFL talent and coaching in the SEC. I haven't seen anything indicating bad decision making in his preseason work. Maybe he won't be elite mentally, but if he is solid, combined with his physical talents, he should be a very good QB. I give him the benefit of the doubt there since the coaching staff seems to like him.

Brady have Three Years Tops in this league barring another injury he's already 36. In three years Mallett is 28, now lets say we give Mallett an extension he coud be a 28 year old heir aparant who transitions right into our QB position. Steve Young sat alot of years before he got his chance behind Montana. I think Mallett coud hit our young WR's in stride if given the chance.:bricks:

The coaches see what The Hammer can do every day. BB will make that decision. I predict that The Hammer walks in 2015. Comp pick.

if McCarron falls out of the first round, he'll be one of the Pats' draft choices and Mallett could potentially walk even sooner than that.

I don't think McCarron will ever be a significant starter in this league.

Brady will be cut or traded before he retires. There will be no meltdown if his successor is good.

ROFL, man. Kraft's next door neighbor.

Why is Mallet seen as a valuable trade item? He's never looked particularly good in any of his preseason appearances.

Because he's better than Brady. Haven't you been following along?

I think it's cute that posters think Tom decides how long he is the starting QB. The chances of him being the QB of the NEP when he's 40 are close to nil.

Yeah, cuz it's always a great idea to trade your backup QB when there are only two QBs on the roster. Do I even have to explain why?

Well they're paying him to be the starter when he's 40 unless he's traded thanks to that guaranteed contract. That contract is basically un-cuttable.

Doesn't he have to be in the roster at the end of 2014 to get the full guarantee?

any update tot the rumored trade with Arizona?...2 second rounders and Mallett for Fitz?

I’m not confirming anything but right now the trade is 2 2nd round picks and ryan mallett for Larry Fitzgerald. More details in AM if real".

This stuff is getting ridiculous.

Didn't Arizona just pay him a roster bonus of like, 10 million dollars in the spring?

I thought we went over all of this several months ago regarding Fitzgerald?

On top of that, he'd have to restructure here at a much lower number, wouldn't he?

Belichick giving up TWO second round picks to turn around and then pay a player a ton of money at the position of WR? I think we have a better shot at seeing the sun explode into a billion pieces tomorrow morning.

It's something like that...the second to the last game, or the last game, as you stated.

What are the chances that Tom Brady wouldn't be here in approx. one year from now though? Is there someone else who is suddenly going to fall into our laps that would be good enough to even bring up the discussion during our drunkest hours?

Boy, that'd be the biggest **** move ever. Make him babysit a group of rookies for an entire summer and the 2013 season, then get rid of him so he doesn't receive his guaranteed money...

The only thing that brings this out Cloud ****oo Land, albeit only to the realm of WTF?, is that his salary for 2013 is only $5M.

None of those who wanted Tebow released have started threads or brought him up in a long time, there's no point in it, however the Tebowites will never let the idea of him being a Patriot drop, as we saw here. Imo the fact that Tebow preferred taking 2 million to play games in Russsia over going to the CFL or AFL to work on his "skills" demonstrated that he really has no interest in working for an NFL job but that one should simply be given to him instead, unless he simply gave up on the idea altogether.

Correction TEBOW TURNED DOWN the offer to play 2 games in Russia. Last I heard Tim was practicing at USC. Just because no other team has offered to pick Tebow up dosen't necessarily mean lack of talent. Kurt Warner is a prime example of that. Not looking for a Tebow debate as the thread is not intended for that. However, I had to respond to this post and make a correction that Tebow turned down the offer to play football in Russia.

Remember that yet-to-be-paid guarantees written into the contract transfer to the new team. That's why it was hard to trade Cassel: whatever team took him would be obligated, at a minimum, to pay him $14.6M.

Pure speculation but with Sam Bradford and Jay Cutler both possibly out for the rest of the season, Mallett and Christian Ponder have both possibly seen their trade stock go up a touch overnight.

I could see Mallett being a nice fit in Chicago with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey both being tall enough to benefit from Ryan's big arm.

So if the Bears offered a 3rd rounder, do we take it?

Note: Bears are in a virtual 3 way tie for first place in their division.

Edit: Deleted a Tebow reference to keep the OP about Mallett only.

Great thread Manxman. I am totally open to them trading Mallett and bringing in another backup QB. Whether he'll be traded, I don't know. Anyways I agree with your post.

Amusing coincidence.

Tebow should have taken the cool mill to play 2 games
