Does anyone else think he's history?

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

Next year will be his last with the Pats, a trade could be in the offing during preseason.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

i think that it will be the end of it. Pats has been waiting to see how backup QB is doing patiently. When they see nothing change, it's time to get another back up. The fact that pats picked up another QB confirms it.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

I put his chances at 50/50. But I think it makes more sense to hold onto him for a bit to see if any other teams get injury to the QB position, and thus a need, before shipping him off for a pick. Can never have too many QB's at the most important position on the team.

Do you actually think the pats could get Anything for him?
If some team has a QB go down, do you think they would look to Cassel?
I don't see it.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

I think after that first Miami game, if Vinny had still been available we would have cut Cassell and picked Vinny back up.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

First of all you cant get nothing for nothing..

He is in the last yr of his contract, and will be around this yr, until O connell develops..

Connel will have many years to develop after Cassel is gone. TB's contract expires in 2010.???

if cassel is not gone, our current QB rookie is next in line. One of these twos has to go at some point. Next year is the latest.

Cassel will see ample pre season time before he is shipped to Chicago for a late round pick next year. O'C will go to the PS and Vinny will be brought in as a back up, IMO.

At 12 Yeas, 14 Nays
the vote doesn't reflect the universal disdain
this board showered on him all day.

One pick-6.
I like to think that BB considers a player's entire body of work
when deciding whether to hold him or fold him.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

I voted no but it's awfully close. I'd say it depends on Gutierrez. O'Connell probably will not be ready to be the #2 at the beginning of the year. So the question becomes is Gutierrez able to be the #2? If he is, then Cassel is gone, and if he is not, then Gutierrez is gone.

It wasn't the pick-6. It was the completely brain-dead lack of situational awareness for a back-up QB to come into a game in that situation and procede to do exactly the one thing that could cost his team the win.

Taking a knee three times or throwing up in the huddle like Donovan McNabb would have been smarter than what Cassell did in that game.

He's done here. Guitierrez has shown more awareness and will be the #2 QB when the Pats break training camp.

Cassel: "I think the situation is right for me to throw a pick."

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

About 50-50.

There's a small chance both Cassell and Guittierez stay. There's a small chance they both go. Most likely one will stay and one will go.

I think it's pretty even between them.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

Stopped reading right there.

Should have stopped even sooner, or just skipped the thread...

Mayock says Bill still likes Cassel. Odd how the backups are all named Matt...LOL

There was no rationale for trading (or even showcasing) Cassel until now. He had more value on the roster, something his critics never grasped. Cassel will have a job somewhere next season one way or another and whether we get compensation for that (pre-season trade) or not (FA in 2008) is the only question. What is a better pick then in at the end of the third - a rising QB or some guy who projects to our PS, period. He's like a commodities future. And don't be surprised if a guy like Dimitroff doesn't want a guy like Cassel on his roster to help build the patriot like culture in Atlanta and pave the way for a guy like Ryan and provide an early buffer so they don't have to throw him to the wolves when they need to pull the plug on Joey again in week 3. I guarantee you Mangenius would trade for him if he could. There are a dearth of remotely competent QB's in this league today.

It's hilarious how people here have been trying to get rid of Cassel for going on 4 years now...yet he's survived Vinny, Flutie, Gutierrez, Redman, and a host of others.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

It really depends. Is Gutierez ready to be the #2 QB?? I think its a possibility. He definitely seemed to have a better pocket presence than Cassel.

What can Cassel net us in a trade?? Unless we can get at least an early second day pick for him. Then what is the point in getting rid of him?? We would be better off keeping him and letting his contract expire. In the meantime we could put Oconnel on IR for the year.

Re: Will Cassel Make the Roster in 08?

I think they'll wait and see how O'Connell looks in preseason. If they see good things out of him and Guttierez, it's possible we cut him, but also possible we carry four QB's for the first five weeks and hope to get a trade partner by the deadline.

Cassel was a 7th rd pick, so if we can get someone to give us a 6th for him I think we call it a win. Too bad though, there was something about Cassel I liked.

No way O'Connell makes it to the PS. Some other team will snap him up
with the philosophy of " If Bioli drafted him, he must be something special."It's not worth the risk losing him So unless you plan on carrying 4 QBs, either one of Guttierez/Cassel gets cut or somebody gets a mysterious injury leading to IR or Cassel gets trading for a late round/conditional pick.
