Will Campbell Watch

I still feel pretty good about Campbell he's going to at worst be a league average tackle since he's already that or very good guard, the most important thing with already having Maye and no obvious pick at #4 was to avoid a bust and i think we've done that.

He was always going to struggle with Garrett.

Everyone struggles with Garrett.

He's not a guard.

At least 2 if not 3 of Garrett’s sacks were on Moses.

And the 2 Campbell gave up were when they had him playing a bizarre technique. They blocked Garrett with the TE and had Campbell retreat behind the block then pick Garrett up after he beat the TE.
Thats kind of impossible IMO because you don’t know how he will come off that block to position properly and then he has a running start and Campbell is dropped back way too far.
I think they abandoned that, and I hope we never see it again.

Yep this one will be a bit of a black mark on Campbell’s otherwise awesome rookie campaign so far. But it happened against one of the best in the game and plenty to learn from as far as how those chips/double teams were working, or weren’t working rather.

That's what I was thinking about the blocking scheme watching the game... isn't it more beneficial to dedicate a RB on Garrett's side to help out where the tackle gets beat? You can still set up screens off of that concept.

He will learn from it.

Will Campbell's learning curve has been really impressive. He just went up against the best. He will get better.

They did him no favors with how they blocked Garrett. They tried to put a TE on the line to that side to “double” him but Garrett just lined up wider outside the TE which results in a weird technique where either he was waiting for Garrett who had a full head of steam or he had to widen out to meet Campbell on a wider track which exasperates the issues he already has with his reach. Just a total flop on the scheme. They adjusted and I thought it was telling that they seemed to play Garrett on Moses more in the 2nd half.

Black mark? No. Not at all. Garrett is the frontrunner for the DPOY. There's a reason he gets paid $40m a year.

I blame the piss poor and unimaginative protection schemes more than anything else. But then again I suspect the schemes are restricted by the lack of athletic talent on the line.. there have been more than a couple of times where linemen fail to reach their trap block objectives because they're just not fast enough to get there in time.

In the BB era, Scar would scheme imaginatively to neutralize star rushers by having rotating blockers come from every which where. There is no better way to neutralize a star rusher than have a surprise block come out of nowhere to knock him off his base. He starts to think too much about who's going to come for him, starts looking around too much.

I remember a game where Suggs (Baltimore) got his clock completely cleaned out by Gronk on a wham block and was so spooked thereafter that he didn't even get as much as a hurry the rest of the game.

Garrett might be the best in the league and he’s still a rookie. He’s still been really good overall.

There was one sack or tackle by Garrett that I saw where Campbell held his own against him one-on-one but Maye moved way up and allowed Garrett to get to him. That may have been while using that technique but I'm not sure.

I don't follow college ball so the first time I see players are when they get to the NFL. This kid is the real deal.

Are people serious about being concerned about Campbell now??
I mean, come on. He had a few reps against THE BEST DE in the NFL where he got beat.
OL is a group effort, and sometimes the D player wins too. Browns are known to have one of the best DL's in the league.
So, our whole OL struggled a lot - because we're still new/young. But, we've seen enough of Will, that he is absolutely the guy. We'll be lucky if he plays with us for the next 12 years.

Only the ones that have had an axe to grind the whole time. Most rational individuals are very happy with what Campbell has been.

Felger and Mazz still fighting the good fight over his arm length looool

I was listening to Lazar and he was talking about how for most teams, you have to suck and draft high to get the blue chip players at certain positions: QB, LT and a premier defensive player. The Pats did that and are locked in with our QB, LT and CB1 for the next decade. That's the core you build around to have a sustainable team. So I was already high on Campbell before the draft and 11 weeks in, even more so.

Simmons wasn't exactly the steal of the draft on Sunday. That's understandable being his first game back but I'm glad we have Campbell.

You can’t seriously believe he actually means that… it’s very obviously hyperbole lol

It was not hyperbole, State actually believed they Campbell was going to be a massive bust at LT, and that Verdarian Lowe would take over left tackle.

State also never wanted Drake Maye, wanted them to trade down and take Spencer Rattler, and then claimed Rattler would have a better season than Maye this year.
