Wickersham book discussion

If you don’t agree with me, find another team to root for!!!

Anyone who thinks they should get rid of Belichick because the Patriots haven’t had a winning record over the last year and a quarter is a moron, and they should go find a team that never loses to root for.

They went from double digit wins for 20 years to 8-12 since the beginning of last season. That's a nose dive. Things are what they are whether you like them or not.

I don't know where I said I wasn't willing to put up with a few years of rebuilding. I quoted a post that said had if Bill left the franchise would nose dive. Webster dictionary has an alternate definition of nose dive: a sudden extreme drop. We went from 12-14 wins a year over the span of two decades to 7 wins and now 1-3. Seems like a sudden extreme drop in the number of wins to me.

You just said that the team is currently in a nosedive under Belichick...you are clearly impatient with the rebuild. Stop spinning, which you do a lot.

I know this revelation will shock the conscience but, barring a rash of COVID and injuries, I expect the Pats to improve a lot as the season progresses.

To be honest I think we are pretty close to starting from scratch. Let's say by year 3 Mac is just starting to enter his prime. How many guys on the current roster do you think will still be here in 2 years from now? Maybe Andrews, Dugger, Uche, Meyers, and a few other rookies from this and last year's class? I don’t think this team had a lot of young talent coming into the season which is why they went wild in free agency. Maybe some of these guys give Mac a boost next year and accelerate the learning curve but I think Bill really needs to nail the next draft class or two particularly at the skill positions and in the secondary to set us up going forward for the next 3-5 years.
2 years from now? Bourne, Henry, Smith, Meyers (I think they'll keep him around), Stevenson, Taylor...Judon, Mills, Perkins, Barmore, Wade (hopefully, he becomes something) - whole bunch of people, plus those they choose to keep, as they'll have money.

Unlike many of the FA deals, particularly this year with the down money, most of the FAs brought in are on 3 or 4 year contracts.

When could you ever look at a football team and predict rosters two years down the road? Two years is an eternity in the NFL. Looking at all the expiring contracts/possible retirees, etc., is just going to give you heartburn.

Avtually they are 8-12...is 20 games enough of a sample or nah? Maybe it was the 160 mil they spent in the offseason and still cant get more than 18 ppg. Is that how they stayed competitive for 20 years? Going crazy in the offseason?
If you look at the Pats roster last year, you'll see that they had a lot of guys over 30, along with a bunch, a large bunch, of people on their rookie deals.

So let's say they didn't spend that money, since you seem to be complaining abut it...

First of all, you have to spend near the CAP, but let's say they just did a bunch of 1-year deals or whatever...in your scenario, they have the same dearth of talent they had last years, where Meyers is their unquestioned #1 and their rookie QB is throwing to Meyers, Gunner, Harry and Asiasi.

They don't have Judon, who has already become the leader on that D. They don't have McCourty's replacement on the team.

But they have a crapload of money going forward? Then what?

What's your formula?

I excluded the rookie class from this year and last but my point was that we still have a pretty old roster at most of the starting spots. I am talking more about young guys we can truly start to build around. Obviously Mac is one and so far Barmore looks like a good one but going back through the last few draft classes there really isn't anyone you can point to and say that is a cornerstone type guy. I think a lot of these recent free agents will unfortunately be a bridge from the lean years to getting back into being actual contenders again. The roster still needs to be supplemented with a lot more young talent and by the time Mac is coming into his prime a lot of these guys signed this year will be gone.

I gave the definition in my previous post. Keep up.

Good question from Ernie. Not sure what they were doing either.

Patricia is turning out to be quite the dunce if this book is to be believed. I don't like that he seems to be worming his way back in with Bill either.

They went 20 years without spending 160 mil in the offseason, now its the move? If you can find a time when a team did that and won, let me know. So what formula did they use for the last 20 years? That one seemed to work, lets go with that one.

Aren’t Bill and Fat Matt good buddies away from football though? I read somewhere them and their wives hang out together. It’s not just a business relationship.

They're swingers? Wow, who knew.

Why, did he eat your lunch? Lol
I think he's referring to the sexual assault accusation from when Fat Matt was a student at RPI

Yeah apparently they're pretty close. I liked Patrica before he left but once he was gone we saw a more aggressive defense and the way Patrica failed miserably on and off the field in Detroit I wasn't thrilled to have him back. Now if this book is to be believed it seems like he was a big part of blowing that super bowl against Philly.

The Patriots really threw away a Super Bowl apparently over Butler getting into an argument with Matt Patricia. I don’t know whether to lmao at that or be sad.

patricia is a lard, his players hated him, he is super arrogant, and micro managed everyone around him. His instincts as a D coordinator is horrible

go back to building planes matt

Wow I didn't see this earlier. I hope Ernie didn't leave because Patricia is back. At least someone within the organization was saying something at half time.

Patricia wasn’t creating schemes behind belichicks back. The patriots had struggled with the Reid offense, and were consistently using light personnel more often.
That season they used the infamous 4 safety package throughout the season against teams that used that scheme.
They weren’t disagreeing about how to defend the run, Adams felt stopping the run should be a bigger priority and they should get out of the 4 safety defense.
I never liked that scheme, but using contrived writings like this to trash a good DC is silly.
Patricia was DC here 6 years and we went to 3 Sbs and won 2. They were 75-21 in the reg season and 11-4 in the post season. His defense, on average ranked 9 in scoring.

When did it become cool for fans to piss in the people who delivered success to the franchise?
