Why does 1st round pick Sony Michel play like a jag?

This would make more sense if they actually used Sony as a blocker in obvious passing situations in 2018. They didn’t. It was exclusively White on the field on 3rd Diana and in those situations. They tried it with Michel in early 2019 before scrapping that plan altogether because they obviously didn’t like what they saw. Unless you can show me a chart or film review where he was in the game during those situations, you’re reaching here in an attempt to excuse a bad pick.
The Pats use a RB by committee approach and they've used a third down back since Dave Meggett and Kevin Faulk... things are supposed to be different now? The Pats primarily use Sony as their bell cow RB, it doesn't change his skillset or what Caesario specifically said was the reason they drafted him immediately after the draft.

Sony's been bad... when? The run blocking last season was atrocious. Todd Gurley's run blocking was equally bad in 2016 and he averaged 3.2 yards per carry. The Rams improved their TE, O-Line and coaching and he led the NFL in rushing and rushing TD's for the next two years... did his "talent" magically improve, did the talent fairy come in the night and sprinkle magic talent dust on him?

Football is blocking and tackling.

There are no magical players who transcend TEAM. Randy Moss on the Raiders doesn't suck, his TEAM sucks. Joe Mixon is learning that the longer he stays on the Bengals, he's about as talented a RB you'll find in the NFL and being a Bengal is wearing him down to a nub.

There's way too much worrying about how the Patriots use their picks vs how much they actually win.

First six games of 2019: No TE's, beat up O-Line = Sony averaged 3.5 yards per carry.

The final 6 games of the season they got Wynn back (Cowboys game), had two healthy TE's (Watson, Lacosse) and also had Elandon Roberts giving them quality experienced snaps at fullback. Sony averaged 4.3 yards per carry and put up 3 of his highest rushing totals on the season against better defenses.

Blocking matters, this isn't singles tennis.

He’s been utterly useless in the passing game, bad in pass pro, and he’s dependent upon a wrecking ball FB to make anything happen between the tackles. That’s not to mention the bone-on-bone issues, the fact that he looks like he’s running with a piano on his back, and unable to make anything happen behind perhaps one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. He was a waste of a first round pick, and this is coming from a guy who wanted him. But all of that doesn’t change the fact that you used a quote about his skills as a blocker to justify the pick when, in reality, he was rarely if ever in pass pro in 2018 and most of 2019. He was so bad on third down that the Patriots gave up on using him in those spots.

Show me some charts or graphs. This sounds like complete imagination on your part. Tom was one of the best protected QB's in the league with Sony or otherwise, a total reimagining by you.

When has the team ever gone away from James White... never. Moreover for a young player to get pass attempts from 40+ year old Tom Brady they need to invest in TB12. Tom throwing past Sony to Edelman is how the Eric Rowe took a pick six to the house in week 16.

Our young WR's are magically effective now with Cam, the talent fairies must have found them as well.

Well it makes it all worth it then. Clearly the only place to get a plodding RB that can block is in the first round. Now the pick is fully justified.

You tell those homers. You are doing a great job.

I don't like what I've see from Michel since 2019, but I'll wait until the end of the season before before bringing out the pitchforks.

Apparently, a mobile QB and healthy O-line isn't enough for him so far.

Don't feel bad for him, he made his choice signing that extension.

Sounds like I don’t need to do that. Sounds like you already know that...

Very nice job launching a torpedo into your own point. You’ve just proven my point that your original analysis, that he was selected because of his skills in pass pro in obvious passing situations, was B.S. Otherwise, why would they have “never gone away from James White?”

Nevertheless, they tried him in that role early last season. He did so well that they never tried him in that role again.

You smell that? I smell a red herring. How is this relevant to Sony’s struggles or heroics as a pass protector and as a third down specialist, per your OP that I responded to?

Here... let’s try this for an exercise. This will let me know whether I need to continue hammering your point here. Yes or No: Sony is one of the ten best RBs in the entire league (thus making him worth the first round tag). No need to follow up after that or qualify it. Give me a yes or a no on that question.

Yeah, what's up with that?
I called him out for being a crappy poster. He just straight up personally insults just about anyone who doesn't agree with him and I said something along the lines of him working hard to maintain his worst poster on the board label. Now he follows me around talking about calling out homers.

Damn, people getting really passionate about Sony.
You’re new here. It’s like this with every topic. This is probably the most “homerfied” sports message board that exists on the internet.

They tried Sony as a third down back last season? That's news to the rest of us.

Sony didn't receive a single pass target until week 3 last season, he didn't receive another until week 5 after the media pointed out Sony was underutilized in the pass game and providing a tell to the coaches... he caught 3 balls on 3 targets in week 5.

Seems you'd better try providing graphs or at least some semblance of data because your memory is hazy.

In week one Sony led the team in rush attempts, he has always had the same role. It's a RB by committee, always has been.

In 2019 Chubb played 68% of the Browns offensive snaps on the season, Sony played 37%... about half as many snaps as Chubb on offense. Chubb rarely left the field, the Patriots rotate players in, they use players situationally.

What’s funny, at least to me, here is that you don’t realize that you’re completely destroying your own OP - that he was drafted with an eye toward pass protection and as a pass catcher - while also including a nice straw man for good measure. His lack of use there in 2018 and 2019, my original counter point, refuted that. And now you’re doing nothing but making my point for me here. First rule of holes, my friend.

Now let’s have an answer to that question. Here it is, in case you forgot...

The Patriots didn't draft Sony to be the best of anything except the best at doing his job.

So far the only thing destroyed has been your take they tried out Sony as a receiving back and he failed. When? Never is the answer, they've always had James White, they've used Sony as the runner since his rookie season. If he sucked they would bench him for Rex, White or anyone.. simple.

This reads like a tattered white flag waving in the wind. I’ll let you off. Your non-answer answer and the fact that you’ve backtracked your OP speaks volumes. Have a good night.

That is all you do here. You think you are some sort of Homer police. Its kinda embarrassing.
