Why do people put so much stock in finals series/super bowl record?

Montana played in two laugher SBs where the opponent didn't bother to show. He played great in those 2, but it helps having Miami acting like they've never seen Roger Craig go out for passes, or Denver letting Jerry Rice run through their secondary uncovered.

He was good when he needed to be in SB16, but Cincy shot themselves in the foot in key moments. Kudos to the 49ers D for making plays when they needed as they were a huge reason they won...much like the Pats D in SB36 while Brady won MVP.

SB23 is Montana's SB shining moment and it almost didn't come to be as Cincy dropped an easy interception in the endzone that would have both kept a score off the board and ruined the "no SB interceptions" clutchness label.

When Montana wasn't making SBs, his teams were putting up 3 points in consecutive one-and-dones against the Belichick Giants D, or he was getting benched in a home playoff game as the heavy title favorite in a 3rd straight one-and-done. I'm pretty sure Montana will take 3 SB losses over those exits. Brady has never ended a season like those Montana finales.

Chris

Brady's legacy is intact as the GOAT of QBs and maybe as the best player ever regardless of position. The guy went for 500 yards in a losing effort. Our coaching staff blew that game.

Montana played in an era in which the NFC won, what? 14 Super Bowls in a row? All the tough teams were in the NFC. If the Niners had played in the AFC in the same era, he'd probably make the Super Bowl more but also would have lost more, possibly very badly. Maybe he would have succumbed to the 86 Bears or lost to the Giants 49-3 in the Super Bowl or gotten benched like he did in 87.

In the same vein Lebron James has gone to 7 NBA Finals in a row and won 3 in an era when all of the other great teams are in the Western Conference. If his teams were in the West all this time, he might have a perfect 3-0 Finals and fallen to the likes of the Spurs, Warriors, and Mavs before getting to the finals.

In all cases, the perfect finals record isn't as important as how many times they proved to be on the last team standing.

And then there's Bill Russell. His team was the last one standing for 11 of the 13 years he played. Of the two seasons his team didn't win it all they lost in the finals once and he was injured for the other. Now that's what I call dominant.
