My guess - due to the fact Bird's arrival marked the rescue of the Celtics and was a major part (alongside Magic) of the NBA's resurgence as well.the last 2 posters put Bird over Russell. Just curious why?
We've been fortunate to have had so many great Boston/New England sports teams and players over the years. I can't argue with anyone's choices because they're all great.
However, as one of the old dudes here, I can remember seeing Ted Williams play. I was in High School when Ted played his last game in 1960. It was only fitting that he hit a home run during his last at bat in his last game. I found an old Youtube piece that shows his last hit. If this link works and you want to see it, the piece is about 5 minutes long. You might want to fast forward the first couple of minutes to get to it.
BTW, there were only 10,000 fans at Fenway that day. The RS were in 7th place. I think what some of the younger fans might miss is how important Williams was to the game and especially to the people of Boston and New England in general.
I would also like to put in an honorable mention for **** Williams. **** coached the RS out of Baseball doldrums to what is called the "Impossible Dream" of the 1967 Season. Yes, we lost the WS in 7 games that year but the Impossible Dream hooked a lot of what became die hard RS Fans (including myself) for the many years that followed.
Someone mentioned the importance of perspective and historical significance of these players and coaches and I totally agree.
I grew up with Larry so i'm def biased towards him but Russ is #1. Always will be.My guess - due to the fact Bird's arrival marked the rescue of the Celtics and was a major part (alongside Magic) of the NBA's resurgence as well.
Only arguments would be to add Jerry West for hoops considerationLA

Same thing with ClevelandYeah hockey would kill the SF mt Rushmore but the NFL/NBa/MLB is stacked
this one is a good oneDetroit. Ty Cobb. Barry sanders. Gordie howe and Isaiah. Isaiah is the weak link.
I didn't check it out but it was probably a weekday game. The RS didn't draw well back then especially for weekday games.Still blows my mind there were only 10k people in Fenway for Teddy's last game.
In 83 when Yaz retired the Sox sucked but Fenway was jammed.
Ortiz had a weeks worth of adulation.
I hate the fact Isaiah is on that list.Detroit. Ty Cobb. Barry sanders. Gordie howe and Isaiah. Isaiah is the weak link.
The Sox were in the desert for years in the late 50's/early 60's. There was the AL and NL, each with 8-10 teams and no divisions, so we had to fight through all those teams to get to the World Series. Most teams were out of the race by mid year, and we were regularly in 7th place and Fenway would be empty in September. That all changed in 1967.I didn't check it out but it was probably a weekday game. The RS didn't draw well back then especially for weekday games.
While I was in high School, I worked at a restaurant and in 1961 my boss took us to a RS weekday Game and he was able to buy tickets right behind the backstop on the same day of the game. I remember seeing very few people in the stands.
And of course I didn't think anything of it at the time but on that day, I got to see a Rookie by the name of Carl Yastrzemski play in his first season. LOL
I could be talked into something different but Bird was more my era. I picked Ted Williams because or the tunnel.the last 2 posters put Bird over Russell. Just curious why?
