Who would you rather have? Welker or Amendola?

DHB has ha da bunch of scrubs throwing him the football. I think he's a different player with Brady throwing him the ball.

What does that have to do with his **** route running and terrible hands? If they bring in a garbage receiver like that, Brady is only going to ignore him, like Ocho.

he's last two years in oakland were mid level WR numbers no one is going to pay a mid level WR 8 million per, i said i want the pats to sign him cause i think he could be signed for a 2 or 3 year contract that would only be a 3 million dollor cap hit in he's first year,

what your looking for is a true #1 WR that catchs everything thrown he's way thats just not going to happen but a mid level WR that has the potential to be a #1 with the right QB

Heyward-Bey misses a lot of catch-able passes. He was the third best option on the Raiders. Give me a break.

Do you guys know how many receiving yards Amendola had last year?

666

Sounds like a bad omen.

Seriously though, I think that Welker over Amendola is a no-brainer. Welker is about as tough as they come too...best slot receiver in the league, hands down. The guy is a machine there, and I think some Pats fans are rationalizing when they talk about his age. He's only 31 (32 next month), so I figure that he could be very productive for the next 5 years if he's driven to do that and doesn't get seriously injured. He didn't even really play all that much before coming to New England in 2007, so that probably saved some wear-and-tear.

What has Amendola REALLY proven so far? That's the question. You don't just plug in any old person in there and expect the same results, even if you are Tom Brady. There is a thing called chemistry too...Brady had it with Welker big-time.

Welker is proven...Amendola has potential. How both these guys do will be intriguing story-lines next year. God, I miss football.

It would be interesting to source some thread material when the Patriots first acquired Wes Welker to see what the sentiments were at that time. Amendola deserves to be rated on what he does with the Patriots, not what he did with the Rams.

So I think it's obvious welker was let go for money reasons. Regardless of how you feel about that who would you rather have?

Welker over the next two years or Danny vs the next 5?

Personally welker over the next two years seems the obvious choice, I don't see a scenario baring a injury how he doesn't give you the 200 catches the next two seasons.

I don't care how old he is he hasn't had injury concerns and any argument using that is moot considering who they brought in to replace his production. Thoughts?
Welker....i don't know much about Amandola, but from what ive read Welker is durable and dependable and Amendola isn't. Welker for two years sounded about right to me.

Yeah?

It would also be interesting to source some thread material about when the Patriots first acquired Tom Brady to see the sentiments at the time...or when Drew Bledsoe went down that year. "Don't worry, we have a Hall of Fame 6th round QB waiting to step up." NOBODY said anything of the sort.

Amendola deserves to be rated on what he's already done if we are going to rate him today, just like anybody else. Dude's been the league four years. He went undrafted and didn't do all that much up until now. Are you saying that we can't rate anybody until after the fact...maybe until after their entire career is over? That is, of course, not the way it works.

Like I say, he has potential. Brady should make him better.

Wes Welker had been in the league for 4 years before coming to New England, exactly the same as Amendola. Welker's best year up to that point was similar to Amendola's, only Joey Harrington was throwing to him that year in Miami...the only year he really had any real time at receiver.

I'll say this, though: I specifically remember Steve Tasker calling Welker his favorite player in the league while he was still in Miami.

There were several Patsfan morons wailing incessantly here about Kraft throwing in the late 7th round pick in the trade as being "too much"

Apparently Welker turned down a two year $15 million offer from the Titans. Ruston Webster said they were the other team trying to sign him.

interesting tidbit or maybe not.

Amendola did the studio analysis of Superbowl 46 for BBC.
It would be interesting to hear what he said about the drop that night.

unfortunately I was too busy punching a door and immediately deleted the recording.

Damn.

I remember him being a smart & articulate guy when he was doing the BBC gig.

Welker. im so pissed on this franchise, the man gave his life on the field, i dont believe ******* 2M$ or BB's ego just made that happen.

Welker is durable and dependable and Amendola isn't.

Welker for me too, but the durability issue is a little complicated.

Can you really be "prone" to the injuries that Amendola has had,

a broken collarbone and a dislocated elbow?

It seems like anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time is going to get those types of injuries, thus it was just his bad luck. It's not a bad back, bad knee, bad feet, muscle pulls, etc., which are the sorts of things that keep coming back.

Interesting comparison:

Wes Welker, including last year at $9.5mm franchise, earned $27,651,120 in six seasons with the Patriots.

Amendola was signed for five years at $31mm. Assuming he completes it, he will earn more in five years than Welker did in six.

Yes, very relevant question.
Some guys get hit, hard, and just don't get hurt. See Welker.
Some guys get hit, and get injured. See Edelman. Wheatley. Dowling.

Edelman's injuries might not be of the "injury prone" type, but his bones tend to break under the forces NFL players experience. Welker's don't.

It may be that Amendola is in the Edelman category.

2 days ago, I preferred welker

I now prefer amendola

Good article from Grantland about BB decision making in signing WW 6 years ago and signing DA now:

Bill Barnwell on the second day of NFL free agency - Grantland

When Bill Belichick dealt second- and seventh-round picks to the Dolphins to acquire Welker in 2007, he wasn't bringing in a player with much of a pedigree. Welker went unselected in the 2004 draft, and while he made the Chargers out of training camp, San Diego cut him after the opening week of the season. Every team in the league got a second chance to acquire Welker for free, and each of them passed. Welker cleared waivers and made it to the Dolphins, where he spent one year as a returner and special teams grunt before eventually working his way into regular offensive reps. Unable to beat out the immortal Chris Chambers and Marty Booker for spots in a below-average passing attack, Welker started just three games during his three seasons in Miami. He caught 96 passes for 1,121 yards and one touchdown. Not in his last year. Across all three years.

For this year and next, I'd rather have Welker than Amendola. I'd guess that the Pats made the switch with 2015-2017 in mind, but it's definitely a gamble. We'll see. I'm worried, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Amendola turns out to be awesome for us.

I have to admit it was those drops during the playoffs. Those kinds of catches are what WW was gotten for and he just couldn't get the job done.

Now I have no idea what kind of receiver DA is under pressure, but it's clear that WW gets a tiny case of the yips, and that's all one needs to blow the great play. I'm not excusing TFB, but he has gotten his team there so many times, it's about blanking time they get him there--to paraphrase GBB.

Sometimes I hate that the Pats think so far in the future (while other teams win the offseason), but then I realize we've been AFCE champs 10 out of the last 12 years
