Who would of thought in 2004 how bad the next four years would be

Re: That's the price Pat fans are going to pay for the excellence

Another hideous thread.
This year was bad, but not because of any results in the standings.
Only because a very special QB has his future in doubt.

Hey I'm a guy who has second-guessed the team in our playoff defeats the last couple of years but this year we got the very best out of our boys and then some. After Brady went down, I thought we would go 10-6 if everything fell into place (Cassel not imploding, D stepping up). We did one game better, albeit under different circumstances (Cassel stepping up to save an imploding D).

You must understand that there are many here for which only Super Bowls matter. They would have preferred the following to what the team accomplished.

4-12
4-12
8-8 in the playoffs and win the SB
4-12

Fans have a right to their own view of the world, no matter how dysfunctional. For them, the day after the SB, 31 teams are total failures, and certainly major disappointments. For me, that would be a sad disappointing world to live in. I can understand; after all, many grew up as Red Sox fans, learning to enjoy such disappointments. BTW, these fans will likely spend the next six months talking about how we need to rebuild at every position.

For others, we have had a great four years, and an absolutely great 2008. We have had one of the best team decades of all time. There is no question in our mind that we would be the overwhelming favorite in current the Super Bowl run if Brady hadn't been injured, and we would have been in the playoffs with one or two fewer injuries, or even a bit better luck from others (11-5 in a two-wildcard system has always been good enough in the past).

Funny, there are fans of at least 25-28 other teams that would have loved to had the four "bad" years the Pats have had since their last Super Bowl. Other than the three and soon to be four (assuming the Colts, Steelers, or Giants don't win again) who have won Super Bowls in that time period, who has had a better four year stretch than the Patriots over that time.

I guess if we spoiled when we consider three of four years making the playoffs, two of four years making the AFC Championships, one year making the Super Bowl, a perfect regular season, breaking about a dozen records, and overcoming the loss of Brady to win 11 games a bad stretch.

Seriously other than the three teams that actually won Super Bowls, who had more success in that stretch. And the Giants and Steelers missed the playoffs at least one year during that stretch.

2005- Pats lose in a divisional playoff game. Our hated rivals, the Steelers win the Super Bowl.

2006- The disastrous AFCCG and our biggest rivals, the Colts, winning the Super Bowl.

2007- That doesn't need to be explained.

2008- Pats missing the playoffs. Most likely one of our rivals is going to win the Super Bowl. It will probably be the Chargers seeing how the Steelers have already have won one in the past four years.

Ummm, how is this bad ? The Pats have been one of the best teams over the last 4 years, averaging 12 wins a season. Us, as Pat's fans, have become pretty spoiled. Unless the Giants win the next 2 SB's, the Pats will be known as the team of the decade. When's the last time that happened ? Hint, never! The Pats are 112-33 since 2001, 3 SB Championships, 4 AFC Championships (5 AFC Championship games !!), boy are we spoiled ! Heck, even the so called bad years, the last 4 years, the Pats are 55-17 (and have gone to 2 AFCCG's !!). With the amount of injuries we had this year, the Pats showed the heart of a champion, and hopefully the football gods shine on us again next year, with an injury free year.

What a horribly spoiled fanbase we have become. Being competitive for the long stretch the Pats have is to be applauded and appreciated, folks.

That said it all....SPOILED!!!!!!! Good post...BAd years...I guess for some that ARE spoiled..it may be bad...BUT anyone with perspective KNOWS about what BAd is..who has been a fan..teams in the 70s...80s..90s...ALL way way worse...If this is considered bad...you are a Patriot fan with only a few years being one..

The OP probably could have framed their question better, but again (surprise, surprise) doesn't deserve nearly the abuse they are taking from the Patsfans.com elite cognoscenti.

I think the heart of the question is not without merit: looking back after the 2004 SB, you probably wouldn't think that between 2005-2008 the Pats would not win a SB, only get to one SB, and not make the playoffs in one year.

Obviously it's all about perspective, as "fans of other teams" would love to have the Pats "failures." But it just speaks to the expectations of champions that Pats fans expect a SB every year are disappointed without it.

Disappointment does not equal "season is a failure." Frankly, the fans of every team not in the playoffs should be disappointed today.

Is anyone ashamed of being a Patriots fan?

That's the only way you could consider the past four years "bad".

You would also be a complete idiot.

Like I said in other threads:

-When you win 3 SB's in 4 years, alot of things big or small have to go your way for that to happen, no matter how great you are. Can't win them all and the last 4 years have just been the law of averages catching up to us IMO. I think now it's about time things start bouncing our way again and definately feels like we're due for another title soon as long as we stay this competitive.

-When you can look at the results of our past 4 seasons as 'bad', that just shows how great a shape our franchise is in right now. And there's no reason to believe we're not going to get any better in upcoming years given our cap situation and the play of some of our younger players this year.
Great post!

The title of this thread is so stupid, that I can't even believe that someone would take the time to type:

"Who would of thought in 2004 how bad the next four years would be"

How BAD the last 4 years have been? Seriously?

My goodness, I need to visit Patjew in China.

Out of the past 4 years, the only one I can look back on and be bothered by is last years SB. Besides that, yeah the losses sucked but it's better to enjoy the season and have some exciting games than just get dominated 12 times a year. Just this season we had some great football games, some come from behind wins...just a year of very enjoyable football. So we didn't make the playoffs. Yeah, that sucks. It's not the end of the world though.

You think these last 4 years have been bad? Try being a Lions, 49er, or Jets fan.

2005- Pats lose in a divisional playoff game. Our hated rivals, the Steelers win the Super Bowl.

The officiating that year was one of the worst in league history.

2006- The disastrous AFCCG and our biggest rivals, the Colts, winning the Super Bowl.

We all know the Colts had the game handed to them because the officials refused to call pass interference on the Colts players.

2007- That doesn't need to be explained.

Another official refuses to make a call during the game and admits that he was incorrect in not doing so immediately after the game.

Now, those are all facts. Not whining. Not crying. Just facts. And the other fact is that the Patriots were on the short end of the stick for it. Oh well. It happens.

2008- Pats missing the playoffs. Most likely one of our rivals is going to win the Super Bowl. It will probably be the Chargers seeing how the Steelers have already have won one in the past four years.

You keep claiming that all these teams are Rivals of the Pats. They aren't. And I don't believe that it will be an AFC team that wins this year. My bet is Carolina.

The problem is defensive and offensive coaching. I miss Weiss and Romeo. McDaniels is a good one, but more of a Marino than a Montana. Pees is just garbage, and Mangini was horrible before him.

Yes, Pess is garbage. That's why the defense, under him, set the team record for least points allowed.

Sorry, but Crennel wouldn't have done any better with the issues the team had on the defense during the last 2 years. To say otherwise is to say that Crennel is some kind of healing magician or that he could have prevented Colvin from getting hurt last year or Thomas from breaking his arm this year...

How.......bad?

You mean....

How bad it was that the Patriots went 16-0, had two AFC championship appearances, made the playoffs three out of those four years, and the one year they didn't make it, a backup quarterback took them to 11-5 in an exciting season?

Your compass is all screwed up. Talk to someone in Detroit or Dallas or...hell anywhere else in the NFL about bad.

You didn't hear that Crennel is a voodoo witch? I'd still love to see him back. Nothing against Pees but I love a nice RAC.

Perhaps I am in the minority here, but I could care less about the path it takes to get there. All I care about is how it ends, and the endings of the past four years, whether the end of the Patriots' season or the NFL season in general, have been nothing short of disastrous to me.

Its good to know that you've just recently jumped on the bandwagon and that your sense or reality is truly warped to the point where even good things look bad.

I have been a Pats fan since the 60's. WHile I would have loved a couple more SB's the last 4 years have been fine given the horrible ownership we had till B Kraft took over. I love have a team to root for that is well coached and gives a great effort almost every week.

Leave well enough alone

RAC is a damn good DC. Don't get me wrong. But for people to make comments like Maverick did about Pees is just assinine.

Just my opinion ..... lame thread !

The Patriots have had a COUPLE of disappointing games, one or two big games ... IN 4 YEARS !!

Wow, looking kinda spoiled !
