I feel BB might roll the dice with Jimmy G in FA if they feel Zappe is not the answer. That said even Ray Charles can see that weak arm Mac is not the answer.

Even if they like Zappe, he's still a rookie so I could see them bringing in Garoppolo regardless and seeing how things go in camp. That said, it probably depends on what Garoppolo costs. Purdy's performance this season has probably hurt Garoppolo's market price a good bit.

What exactly does "done their research" mean here though? They already know him and have worked with him...

I guess it makes sense, but I wonder. I imagined him taking a year or two off since he's getting paid for 4 more years, but he's really young so maybe he wants to get his career on track again for another future HC opportunity right away. And obviously he's a confident guy, so "the guy who fixed the dysfunctional Pats offense" would be pretty good on a resume.

Maybe the can trade for Hopkins if he's the OC.
IF its' like how they research WR's I don't want Kliff K.

I have no problem with that we would be foolish to pass on Jimmy G we Drafted him. This is going to be a very telling Offseason for BB he needs to get with the times the league has caught up to us.

“Done their research” is the language that Albert Breer used, who’s the only source for all this stuff at the moment. Seemed to imply they were doing stuff more recent, but who knows.

The Hopkins implication would be nice though!

This is would be kind of interesting getting Kliff Kingsbury and Jimmy G this Offseason both QB's Drafted by the Patriots Hmmmm.

D Hopkins will be 31 though getting a little long in the tooth.

This is what bad teams do....

They draft a QB in the 1st rd.

They support him with sub-standard coaching, average personnel and the skillset is incompatible with the offensive system they choose to run
-OR-

They change the system and coaching in which he had success with which then leads to regression.

They then deem the QB no longer their future. It's all his fault.

Rinse. Repeat.
I am not the biggest fan of Bill personality and grumpy attitude but I think he is a smart coach. So I can’t believe that Bill decided in the offseason to change the system to screw Mac Jones.

For one we don’t know what the new system really is. I don’t think it is that much different from last year. I still think it’s was supposed to be a simpler version of the EP system.

My guess is after the departure of Josh, BOB was probably the only option that could have coached the old system. Bill wouldn’t screw Saban or BOB didn’t to leave Saban I don’t know but I think Bill plan A didn’t happen and he didn’t want to hire an OC with a completely different system so he hired Patricia back thinking that in simplifying the system it could work. In the end it didn’t.

Edit; I also think Bill thought Mac was a smart guy and could take it.

Its amazing everyone in the thread is killing the choices patriots choices but no alternatives are being offered. 99 % any choice made is not going to make fans happy

I think he had to play Mac otherwise the locker room would have imploded.

Mac has his supporter in the locker room. Meyers, Bourne, Andrews, Henry, Harris and probably Stephenson are Mac guys.

That’s why I could totally see Bill broke that nucleus in the offseason. Meyers and Bourne could be gone. Cutting Henry would save 10M.
Henry should be bye bye.
Or at least have his contract reworked.

I said trade Mac Jones and sign Jimmy G or draft a rookie QB with a trade up.
I also would be interested in trading a low pick for Mitch Trubisky.
Or sick Baker Mayfield.
Both of these retreads have a bigger arm and have more mobility and awareness in the pocket.

Hopefully that’ll lower his trade value…... Beggars can’t be choosers, sure i’m more intrigued by a guy like Jeudy or Higgins as BGC and others have mentioned, but the cost might really be prohibitive for those guys when we have other tackle and secondary sized holes to fill.

And we were a bad Team and the end who can't beat good Teams. Fans are not completely clueless Mac Jones deficiencies were glaring and might not be correctable. I don't think a OC makes a difference in his game his mechanics are just bad.

I would be surprised If BB doesn't move on especially with Jonnu Contract. We can definitely upgrade in the Draft Henry can go back to East LA.

I agree. I think Bill wanted to avoid at all costs a divided locker room.

Other reason is I think they just felt Mac was the better QB and wanted to give him ample opportunity to adapt to the new system.
I agree with all of that. I also want to throw in that Bill loves the competition factor to always be at play.
I think a big part of it was trying to light a fire under Mac’s butt even if he thought Mac was the guy.
2nd year players are still in the “you’ve got to earn it category”.
What could have been a big problem is when the fans were chanting Zappes name. But then again if Mac could not handle the pressure caused by that then I am not sure I would not want him in a SB game with the game on the line. Mac handled it well

I don't get how people claim that O'Brien's offense is not a modern offense. The current en vogue offense of the Shanahan offense is just the West Coast Offense with a few twists which has been around for as long as the Ehrhardt/Perkins offense which the Patriots run or ran prior to this year. Like how Kyle Shanahan revamped the WCO a bit for the modern NFL, the same can be done for the Ehrhardt/Perkins offense if that is what O'Brien brought to the team if he is hired.

The fact is that no one is inventing the wheel with offenses today. There are only a handful of offensive systems that have been around for decades and what has happened over the years is revisions to those offenses to adapt to the playing style of the day.

The fact is based on the current personnel of this team, the Pats would probably have been more successful on offense this year if they ran their traditional offense.

I think it will be open season on the Patriots QB position in 2023 Mac will not be handed the job if he doesn't outright win it.

Or Drafted a better Rookie WR who would have made some sort of impact Watson @ 29 or Pickens over Boney T in the Second.

That's a point many posters ignore in their rage - to hire or make a deal with someone, you need two parties to agree. Can't just go and snatch whoever you'd like.

As it should be. How many UDFA make our team. Best player wins
