Where does J.C Jackson rank and what is he worth?

Corner is like QB in that you are just treading water on offense/defense if your QB/CB1 are not elite.
The 2020 Bucs, 2019 Chiefs, 2017 Eagles, 2016 Patriots, 2012 Ravens, 2011 Giants, 2010 Packers, 2009 Saints, 2008 Steelers, 2007 Giants, 2006 Colts, 2005 Steelers and 2004 Patriots all beg to differ.

An elite CB1 is not necessary to win a championship. A cohesive secondary full of functional players can succeed if the front seven is stout. Likewise, an elite CB is useless if the front seven is incapable of setting the edge or rushing the passer.

I want Jackson back, make no mistake. However, we are looking at impending free agencies (or retirements) of McCourty, Hightower, Brown, Phillips, White, Slater, Karras, Collins, all on top of Jackson, with about $30 million in cap space. Retaining Jackson, at the expense of a functional LB group, will regress this defense back to 2020.

Good summary. Specific to the Pats and the years they won it, their scheme needs an elite man-cover CB1. Team never did anything with smurf zone corners.

If you don't pay JC Jackson, what is the alternative? There's no one appealing in free agency. And the draft is a crapshoot. Do you trot out a poor secondary? If they have a plan, sure. Didn't pay Talib because they had revis. Didn't pay Butler because they had Gilmore. And seemingly traded Gilmore because they are confident in JC Jackson.

You need to pay these guys and strike while your QB is still on a rookie contract. Because when that contract is over you are going to have to pay him alot of money. You don't waste your QBs rookie contract years to save money. Look at the chiefs and Seahawks since their QBs got paid
To be objective, Mahomes contract really hasn't kicked in yet since Chiefs playing cap gymnastics. Seahawks is a good example. The Patriots will spend the money from savings on Jones but Belichick will try to spend it wisely.

I will trust Belichick and what he determines. There are several alternatives but Belichick may want to keep Jackson to have continuity. Patriots can trade for a cornerback, sign a FA that even could be a cap casualty, or draft one.

Belichick will have a number in mind and probably not go much above it. He take pride in finding inefficiencies in the market. If he thinks cornerbacks are being overpaid nowadays, he could even further improve other areas of the defense instead.

Stock watch on Jackson.

It’s Up.

5 targets 0 receptions vs. the browns

JC now leads all CB1s in comp pct. 50% & passer rating against 46.0

Saw a stat that said Jackson allows a TD per every 42 targets. For a comparison Jalen Ramsey allows a TD per every 38 targets. Xavien Howard allows a TD every 14 targets

JC is elite. Whether we rate him high or not doesn't matter , others would. He has 23 career interceptions as compared to 27 for Gilmore. His stats and work on field speaks for itself. Without JC , our defense would get carved out in passing game.

We need JC and we need to somehow make it work. 4 years 68 or maybe 5/ 80.

My understanding is that it is a weak CB FA class. I can see JC commanding 20 million per year. It’s going to take an overpay to keep him. Miles Bryant will be our CB 1 next year.

If he gets 4 more INTs this year, he'll join Bill Bradley as the only players in the SB era to have 9+ back-to-back INT seasons

And if he plays at that rate for 10 years, he becomes the NFL's all time interception leader.

The issue, as has been pointed out here, is that the signing of Jackson can't be calculated outside the context of the overall cost of next year's defense. Probably have to keep Phillips and Bentley, both of whom are having very good seasons, in the face of DMac and HT retirements (or age related performance drop offs). Losing the experience with this defense of those two, plus Jackson, in a single year would be very hard to replace in a single year.

Not one of the football experts here but initial thought is that both the interior LB position and S are harder to replace than is CB, when it comes to running this defense.

Can Josh uche make the leap so that our pass rush with judon and barmore becomes otherworldly so that our cornerbacks don't need to do much. That is the only way we can lose JC Jackson. Else get Shaun wade all the reps he can get . I don't have trust in Jalen Mills.

With the way JC is playing he is already outta our league. colts have huge cap space I guess..

Guess is mccourty is back. Hightower might retire. Bentley should not be that expensive. Phillips we might lose as he is playing way too good for his contract value. We might need to sign another cast off and hope they shine here. JC Jackson in all probabilities will be franchise tagged . That's the cheapest option.

Losing two of the three starting safeties, in a defense that relies on brains and experience, would be very difficult to make up for. You can't bring in guys from other teams and have them quickly perform well in those roles until late in year 1, or even year 2.

The bidding for Bentley may surprise you, especially if the Pats make a playoff run and he does well in those games. He'll be seen as a veteran who can play well for Belichick in a role that demands brains and toughness, and still young enough to have 5-7 good years ahead of him.

He's going to get more than Bill will pay for him.

He's Asanta Mk.2.

Now would be a good time to extend this dude

I'm willing to bet they tried last offseason and he said no.

I'm assuming even if they tried again now he'd say no.
