I think everyone wants JC to stay over Bodden 2.0And those two statements together are why I’m hoping they’ll pay JC

I’d love Bodden, or Bodden 2.0, as the CB2 opposite JC.I think everyone wants JC to stay over Bodden 2.0
Bodden was an excellent CB2 here. Problem is he was their CB1
I like the sound of this:Good article
I'm probably one of the few on this board who has expressed some apprehension paying JC top 5 CB money but this article has me rethinking my position.
J.C. Jackson Is Proving He's No ‘System Guy' and Is About to Get Paid
J.C. Jackson is being mentioned in the same sentence as Mike Haynes these days, and for good reason. As our Phil Perry writes, New England’s top corner is proving that he’s no fluke — and he’s about to get paid.www.nbcboston.com
The franchise tag is projected to be between $17 and $17.5 million for the cornerback position," PFF's contract expert Brad Spielberger told Next Pats this week. "His camp would probably want to work around that number and try to get a multi-year deal maybe for just underneath that to avoid getting the franchise tag. But there are going to be teams that step up.

If Leigh Bodden stays healthy then Brady is probably going for his 10th ring this yearMy memory is not all that bad. He had one okay year, parlayed it into a payout and took the money and ran.
’09 he was an above average corner For the Pats, on a one year contract.
He and the team couldn’t agree on a new contract, so he tested FA waters, had a visit with Houston then signed a four year Patriots deal for $22million with $10million guaranteed. I figure he thought he was worth CB1 money, Pats told him to test the market and come back with a realistic number. For comparison the CB franchise tag in 2010 was $9.566 million. So he got about half of that amount. Not a really high market, just an above average CB.
On that deal he sat out 2010 with an injury, then played five games with 4 PD before retiring in October 2011.
if he’s your model of the alternative for paying JC then BB better open the vault.

Agree, and this is exactly why BB was correct in grabbing a bunch of solid Free Agents this off-season.I don’t think a lot of you are assessing Jackson’s market correctly. Most teams extend their superstars a year before their contract is up. Or franchise them. But they rarely hit the open market. If the Patriots don’t franchise Jackson, and we’re talking about his actual free agency market value, I think less than $20M is too low.
Top bidding teams aren’t going to use Ramsey’s deal as a “we can’t pay him more than the top corner” line. That’s not how this works. Not if a player like Jackson hits the market, and now he’s close enough that he might not accept anything less.
- The cap is going from 182M to 20M8 next year. Each team is about to find a lot of dollars in their couches.
- TJ Watt signed a 28M annual deal with 80M guaranteed. That’s the big game changer right there. Yes, I realize he’s not a defensive back, but look at how mixh more he got than the previously established norm. Jamal Adams got 17.5M as a strong safety, also pushing the bar much higher. Steelers and Seahawks were looking at their cash flow and the cap situation post-pandemic.
- The contracts for Ramsey, White, Gilmore, etc. aren’t so relevant. Again, look at recent stuff accounting for the post-Covid world. Marshon Lattimore got 19.5M two months ago. Marlon Humphrey also got 19.5M a month ago. JC Jackson could absolutely be considered better than these two, or at least equal.
- There’s no way he’s taking $16/17M. The time to do that was a year ago, and back then, people thought it was too high. That’s the risk of “I’m not sold yet.” Now he’s poised for 20M+.

Now that you presented this, there is a possibility Jackson pushes or even exceeds $20M. We've seen plenty of times player A get paid more money then player B (who signed shortly prior) who may be better than player A. Jamal Adams is also very good comp as a starting point as he's been pretty bad in Seattle. If he can't rush the passer, he's worthless. If Jackson leads or is close to league in INT's again, then he deserves to be paid at least Lattimore and Humphrey money. This would be the 3rd straight year he would be in the running for INT leader in the NFL and that is no fluke. It would be asinine to let him walk.I don’t think a lot of you are assessing Jackson’s market correctly. Most teams extend their superstars a year before their contract is up. Or franchise them. They let Gilmore go, letting Jackson go would be a very disappointing blunder by Bill.Every day they drag their feet, the price tag keeps going up. Set time with his agent now and extend JC Jackson asap. 18m/year get it done. No faith in this mediocre front office around Bill.
.
I feel the same way about Jackson as I did about Trey Flowers. Would have loved to have re-signed Flowers but the bidding got ridiculous and would have stopped us adding other players. The Lions clearly regret signing a good but not great player to a mega deal.
Same will happen with Jackson. I would happily re-sign him to a very good deal - say top 10 corner money at $14m a year. I have no interest at $18m+. A team that signs him for that amount is going to regret it. You need to look at the opportunity cost of doing it and who else you can't therefore sign. Franchising him is an even worse plan as you can't lower his cap hit in year one.
Opportunity cost? Who else would they be missing out on if they sign Jackson? You need good CB's to win games in this NFL.I feel the same way about Jackson as I did about Trey Flowers. Add a healthy Bodden to the 2011 team and they likely win the Super Bowl. Bodden > Edelman as a CB.10th ring?
