What's wrong with the Chiefs?

They still haven't really "paid" Mahomes yet. His cap number this year is only $7M. Next year it balloons to $36M and then to $47M in 2023.
It makes you appreciates Brady's brilliance. If Brady cashed in after the second or third ring, he would have been a very good QB in the HoF. Instead, he left money on the table and they were able to sustain it for a remarkable amount of time. Now Brady is the GOAT and he's worth exponentially more because of it.

Ok... So you draft defensive rookies on cheap contracts
Another "the draft is so easy, just get stars with every pick" post.

There is no magic formula for building a team. It does not exist.

It is guesswork built on just raw data - it has no way to account for personality, work ethic, injuries, fit with other teammates, coachability, off-field drive to improve (fitness, game film, etc), family, salary cap, agents, etc, etc - all of which (plus other factors) has a definitive impact otherwise the draft success rate and free agency success rate would be extremely high and sustainable and follow GMs wherever they went.

KC has the same record as us. Their defense is letting up an average of 32 points a game. Mahomes has looked off a lot this season.

What's the problem in KC?

Did Brady/Bucs break them? Are defenses figuring them out now the 4 man front and 2 deep safeties?

What can they do to get back on track?
Superbowl Hangover Syndrome. Plus defensive lineman Chris Jones was out. No pass rush.

Yeah I wasn’t expecting this kind of drop off till next year. Figured they’d be toe to toe with buffalo for the afc.

Teams figured out that if you take away the broken play homeruns and force Mahomes to actually play the position in the short game, he's not great at it. Also, the dumb throws he constantly makes are getting picked off now.

Also also, that defense suuuuuuuucks.

Perfectly put and well-said. I'd add that their receivers also drop too much, and they don't run the ball enough out of arrogance for wanting to show off the passing game.

But yeah, Mahomes still has too much Favre in him. This is why you can argue that Rodgers has always been better; Rodger's pure quarterbacking has been great recently, he can actually play within an offense and play the surgical game.

They have little patience to take what the defense gives them.

They refuse to establish a running game. They have a stable of JAG RB’s which is odd for Reid.

Every play looks the same.

It’s Hill and Kelce and that’s it.

D has a ton of JAG’s.

Collinsworth at it again last night saying Sorensen was one of their best defensive players. Sorensen is one of those guys every team has that has no business being a starter. That guy is a terrible S.

My guess would be the gargantuan contract Kermit signed... The cheefs are already feeling the impact... No money to bring in the mid tier free agents that provide quality depth

A few thoughts

- Dungy said that teams are now copying the Bucs game plan from last year. The big plays aren’t there. The Chiefs need to bury their ego and run the damn ball if other teams are playing coverage/safeties deep. The problem is they aren’t burying their ego and don’t have a good running game.

- as every other poster has said, the defence is Swiss Cheese.

- the cost of all their stars will have them in a bind for a while to come. Very front end loaded and not much depth. Opposite of the Patriots when we were on top. Gotta have depth in the NFL.

- the brilliance of Brady is he’d take what he could get and not force it if it wasn’t there. That’s not Mahomes. There’s many ways to win a football game. Brady learnt that early on.

With all the commercials and advertisements he’s doing, you’d think he wouldn’t have hamstrung the salary cap by taking top of the market deals and gone Brady’s route if he really wanted to be in the GOAT convo.
You mean he didn’t give the Chiefs the Patrick rate?

The concept isn’t that difficult. Drafting in that position makes it challenging. So, why do you keep paying to increase offensive production when you just paid a guy $45M a year to make everyone else better? Already paying market for Hill and Kelce. They were still paying $15M for Watkins up into last year. Big contracts for Fisher and Schwartz. Sinking money into the o-line now when just having average, competent players is needed.

So you have Mahomes, Kelce, and Hill who alone, with mere competent supporting cast, should get you 30 ppg. Spend another $40M so you can average 33 ppg instead? Diminishing returns.

On defense, you have a bottom of the barrel unit where spending that money could have made a huge difference.

It’s the same thing everywhere except New England…get a superstar QB and then make sure you placate them at the cost of a more sensible strategy. The real savings on Brady wasn’t his own contracts…it was the cheap deals for skill players and somewhat o linemen. He made average guys better. They took the cost savings and invested into special teams, defense, and depth. Not such a complicated concept but many GMs/coaches afraid to say no to their franchise QB and face fan retaliation.

They somehow signed Thuney and traded for Olando Brown Jr.

However, look at their drafts since Mahomes and Kareem Hunt in 2017. It’s brutal.

This is a bingo. Brady always had patience in games. If we had to run 50 times to win, that is what he would do. If we had to throw 50 times, he would as well. They are not patient on KC. Indy was not patient in the Manning early days. I remember that 2004 playoff game. Pats basically said, go ahead and run and James was gashing the pats, and Peyton continued to just heave up balls in the snow to Ty Law. It was not like it was a blow out, it was a close game yet Peyton could not bring himself to go into pound the ball mode.

As a Florida alum, I support this message.
Chop over the chomp
1) You can participate while holding a beer
2) You don't feel 'special needsy'

That's right ..... they also have a big contract in Thuney!

Does anybody know how much they will be paying those 4 guys (Mahomes, Hill, Kelce and Thuney) next year?

They will have lots of talented veterans who will be delighted to play for them for chump change for a year at a time in order to play with Mahomes, boost their stats and win a championship.
Another benefit of having a top tier QB

Doing that chop 381 times a game feels “special needsy.”

I’d say Sorensen is maybe the second-worst coverage safety in the NFL, right behind Jamaal Adams.
