That could be the case, but I still think that the '07 team did have to exhibit some grit to make it through the season 16-0. They certainly did have to manufacture some wins there. So I'll concede on the point that they really didn't have to adjust their gameplan, but I'll stick to my guns on the fact that the 07 team had to find ways to win at least a few times during the 07 season. Unfortunately, lady luck cashed in during SB42.

You know I'm trolling to an extent here to make a point. Obviously the 07 team was an incredible offensive machine with the potential to use their strength to force overplays and get easy scores in big games down the stretch.

You know those big games where passing machines like the Rams and Colts have gotten crunched by supposedly average to good defenses that forced them to try to adjust. they didn't, or couldn't and they lost.

I'm saying that failure is not unlike the 07 or 09 Patriots. We have as much talent as anyone in football if we use it all and use it intelligently.

Maybe I'm not fully understanding you, but the poll is asking about the worst Pats team since 2004. It only seemed right to use the full season to try to make the point. I used the numbers since Week 5 of this season only to try to make the sample size as similar as I could.

From the OP:

To keep things consistent, let's use the "version" of the team that entered the playoffs (or in the case of last year, at the end of the year.)

As for the rest, if you want to think that the inconsistent Brady we've seen this season is better than Cassel was at the end of last season, we'll just have to disagree. I'm hoping that Brady makes this moot over the remainder of the season.

A lot of teams sweep the preseason too.

The Colts consistently won regular season games while we won championships and we laughed at them.

Now winning in the regular season and losing the big game is good.

OK.

You are making the most ridiculous argument I've ever seen you make. A team went 18-0 before losing a game in which the QB was hobbled, the tight ends were injured, the RG had to leave the game and an already injured backup had to sub in, the 3rd down back got dinged up and the opponent's completed one of the flukiest pass plays in history. Somehow people considering that team to be better than teams that won fewer games and weren't as good has become bad in your mind.

That's sad, really, that you've allowed a game to make you so embittered.

See this thread is ridiculous because everybody can argue all day about which team as better or worse. At the end of the day though there is only one real target for every Patriots team this decade and thats to win the big game. If you don't win the big game then you have failed to reach the ultimate goal.

Every Patriots team since 2004 has failed to do that. I'd have to say that the best team was 2007 as they got closer to accomplishing that goal.

The 2008 team didn't make the playoffs ergo they were furthest away from achieving their goal.

So for me the order starting with the worst team is

2008
2005
2006
2007

We cannot include this years team yet because there is still every chance that we go all the way to the big game, and who knows we could even win it if the Saints are not there or they don't have the bottle for it on the big day.

If you want to compare regular seasons i guess the team that won all the games is the best.

I'm just saying how we all made fun of teams like the Colts who were incredible in the regular season but not built for the playoffs when defenses tighten.

I'm really only concerned with this season and the fact that we've adopted the live and die by the pass philosophy of those teams we used to beat in crunch time by making them one dimensional.

Please, by all means, let's categorize the worst teams of the ones that haven't won, I guess I'm off the thread emphasis.

Again, I'm not the least bit bitter. I just don't care about collecting players, or anointing non winning teams as greater or lesser.

The best teams are the ones that win it all. The others are relatively equal, the only difference being how they affected future teams ability to win it all.

I believe you'll find my philosophy to be consistent. i don't play fantasy football and I actually believe pronouncements like "only thinking of the next game", "we don't collect players" "humble pie" "the only game that counts is the last one", you know the stuff people say now, but really only care if the QB puts up 500 yds, or beats weak sisters like the Titans or the Bucs by 50 points.

I know I'm in the wrong thread, so fuggetaboutit.

08 we were a better team and Brady had not been inj, we would have been in the playoffs.. Not a knock on Cassel, but till he learned to play the position cost us 2-3 games...

05 Tom Brady took the team on its back and led them to the division title... The D was bad then...

I look at it differently. Because we played a patient and balanced offense we managed to attain a record that would have made the playoffs almost any year, with a very green quarterback.

Play the same way with the option of Brady to Moss when defenses adjust and you've got a monster IMO.

There is one serious problem with your post, one word.

lol @ the idiots who voted this year when the REGULAR season isnt even over.

Changing my vote to 2009. The road futility is indefensible.

Yeah, I'm changing my vote to 2009 as well. This team is pathetic right now.

They are rebuilding but they will not admit it..This team is pathetic IMO very bad,

Easily this one...I want Cassel back lol

this one based on current work

At this point in the year, the 2005 team is still the worst for me. That team was just plain horrendous on the defensive side of the ball for so much of that year. There were so many non-competitive games (SD at home, Denver in the regular season, at KC, a lethargic, gross loss at Carolina, etc.). This team is the most gut-wrenching, bar none, but it is still better than 2005.
