What role will Marcus Cannon have with the Patriots in 2013?
By: John Morgan

With all the starters returning from last year's offensive line for the Patriots, what role will Marcus Cannon have? Where is his best fit, and where can he be the most productive?...

There are many options on the OL. We have brought back everyone but Thomas, and have added Svitek and Greene.
================

The key is indeed Cannon. Where he fits could effect lots of players including: Svitek, Zusevics, Connolly, Wendell, Greene and McDonald.

==============

BOTTOM LINE

We were arguably the best OL in the NFL last year. Mankins is more healthy this year. We should see improvement. Also, having Ballard means we always have a very solid 6th OL at TE. Of course, the preference is the best at that role: Gronkowski.

Dante is able to deal from strength in trying to improve the OL.

One issue that could factor in that Wendell is not signed for 2014.

I think that Cannon is going to establish himself as the starting right guard leaving Connolly and Wendell battling for the starting center job at some point this year.

Also, Markus Zusevics establishes himself as the 3rd OT and not Svitek. Just a hunch.....

If Cannon can win the starting guard position, Connolly will get the starting center position. Wendell was serviceable at center, but Connolly is better.

I respect your opinion, Rob. I'm not so sure that I agree with that statement though, especially after seeing the past season.

I think most would have agreed with you going into the season last year, but I think we saw some very good things from Wendell, and Belichick won't likely want to change up the chemistry that he and Brady have had in the past 18 games together either. Just my opinion.

FWIW--I doubt that Cannon wins the starting guard position either, but that's also debatable. For all of the talk about Cannon playing guard, we've yet to see anything come out of it. Not only that, but Belichick's comments have not led anyone to feel that they want him playing guard either, despite the very limited snaps that he actually ended up finally receiving there last year.

My guess is that we continue to see some of the past trends in TC, with players practicing in roles that they aren't as familiar with, in case of emergency.

This will lead to a plethora of "Cannon will play guard" this year threads due to seeing him take lots of reps initially at guard in TC.

When all is said and done though, all comments from Belichick have led us to believe that they want him to be a tackle, and he is a servicable tackle to have in case of injury.

Cannon was playing guwrd during otas...lets see where that goes. Cannon would be a beastly guard with that size.

I don't think I agree with this.
