What do you want the Pats to do with Butler?

Money does not seem to be the issue, an unseasoned agent seems to be the major stumbling block..

My thought is to have him sign the tender, with the understanding that the Pats will then negotiated a long term deal commencing with the 2018 season..

This is a whole lot of unnecessary drama, made possible by an incompetent agent..

Heard an insurance agent the other day on the Radio say that MB could get an insurance policy of $20 Million, for about $200K... that would be his back-up.

Money is the only issue.

I keep seeing folks criticizing Butler's agent, but it appears that he may get his client more than the Pats were willing to give him.

From the start of this nonsense I've felt the same way and nothing has changed. I'll be wicked pissed if the Pats let Butler go over a few dollars.

Payton just now heavily implied Butler is a part of the deal when he said Cooks was traded to get better on defense.

You don't think using the number 32 pick on a defensive player, such as a corner in a corner deep draft would improve the Saints defense?

The Saints would be idiotic to trade Cooks on a wink and a nod that the Patriots would trade Butler. Too many variables outside of both the Patriots and the Saints' control.

Butler may not want to sign a long term deal for what the Saints are offering. Butler could decide he'd rather play for the Patriots for another year instead, then go and make the real big money contract. Cap goes sup next year too, teams with more cap room than the Saints might want to sign him and he won't cost a first round pick...

No, the Cooks and Butler trades are separate.

I want to turn him into Zach Cunningham

A draft pick is not a sure thing. Butler is a proven commodity. Pairing him with Breaux would give the Saints two legit #1 corners.

How can we do that?? He didn't kill a guy!
I don't know has this guy ever been seen again?

Could be but I don't see why the Saints would publically pigeonhole themselves there. Maximizing draft value is about keeping other teams guessing and having flexibility. to pursue value and BPA.

Meanwhile Butler is the only defensive 1st-round-tendered RFA the Saints have hosted...

Keep hgim whatever the cost. Put the ball into his court whether to sulk about it -- with the full knowledge that if he chooses to do so, that WILL be remembered, and not just by us.

Which is why they did a trade they could both live with if for any reason they weren't able to finish it with Part 2.

Yes he is awesome! He is "Norb Cam" on Youtube and is actually very funny and has a lot of fun pod casts on Youtube. He has him streaming live facebook when he watched Super Bowl 51.. He has a recent Poscast called "Why I feel Sorry for Pats fans" but it is actually a long praise of BB and Tom as the GOATS. He feels "sorry " for us because someday it has to end. A very good watch. He is actually really cool. "Norb Cam" on Youtube.

I actually watched his SB51 video he does come off as a good guy which is why his picture came to mind for my joke.

I voted sign him long term, but I would be satisfied with him playing under the RFA tender this year, then hitting the market next year for his big payday, either with us or whatever team he wishes.

A starting CB trio of Gilmore, Rowe (with safety help up top some of the time), and Butler in the slot is essentially a no fly zone... especially with McCourty cleaning things up deep. Chung comes down to take on the TE and Harmon provides assistance to Gilmore when needed. Either way, though, putting Butler at nickel effectively nullifies the slot WR on many squads and puts the three best corners in the best situations for them on the field at the same time.

Sounds awesome Kontra! But if Butler can't be signed to a long-term deal, would you mind giving up a chance to regain the #32 pick for one year of amazing secondary play?

Butler departed New Orleans without a trade or contract being completed. He has not signed his tender which allows him to be traded.

Now NO has to convince Belichick to accept a trade and Bill is NOT agreeing to do it... Yet. And maybe never.

Welcome back Malcolm. Play for 3.91 million per annum, or sign a below UFA long term contract. Or you can go back to Popeyes if you wish.

The new CBA requires they come back before the season starts or the RFA tolls for another year.

So welcome back Malcolm and play hard so the big UFA contract is available in 2018.

I would keep him the next 2 years (if my understanding of the finances is right) at around $20M using the restricted and franchise tags, then re-evaluate the CB situation in 2019 and see if II want/ need to commit long term $$ to him. Just don't see the potential return being as valuable as he is to the team at that price.

Cool fact about Butler if I'm remember the Denver game last year right- he has played a positive part in each of the last real meaningful defensive play we've had the last 3 years:

This year - 3rd and forever after Long draws the holding penalty, he forces an incomplete 1 on 1 on the outside, keeping ATL out of FG range. Gives us a chance to tie it.

Last year - 3rd down just under 2 minutes, IIRC it was him locked up with a Bronco wideout 1 on 1 on the outside, forces an incompletes. Gives us a chance to tie it.

2 years ago in sb49 - we all know what happened.

He's not just a damn good corner, he is clutch and its more than just the sb49 play. Don't see how him not being on the team at 2 years / $20 M is a good thing. Of course, if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt though it's BB. But I do know that if it were up to me, when there's 2 minutes left in the AFCC / SB the next couple years and one play can prolong or end our title ups, I want him and Amendola on our side.

I like the above much more than "keep him whatever the cost" which I read a few posts above yours. I mean, Butler's agent could say "Okay no matter what the cost, 50 million in cash for 2 years." So somewhere between the absurd and losing him, do that.

But per your post, at the gut level, he's earned that kind of reaction among fans. (A lot of players have earned fan loyalty here over the years... but we have learned that only 12 is 12... and maybe one day, I have to remind myself, not even 12).

One of the nice things about being a fan of the Patriots recently is that if somebody who we "really need" leaves it feels like a gut punch, but we know that we'll survive it.

He will go down in Boston sports lore forever. Up there with Bobby Orr's goal, Ortiz homers, etc.
