if a construction worker at Gillette died on the job, my guess is that crew would be (forced) back to work as soon as the OSHA inspectors cleared out

i am all for the NFL taking some time on this one (they won't take too much time, because there's millions riding on this, so let's be honest here), but let's not pretend that the average working stiffs would be getting the same treatment

I worked for a Land Development / Contractor company when we had one of our most beloved pipe crew workers get sucked into a storm sewer and dragged 1000 feet to his death. I can tell you, we did not go back to work right away. The investigation took a while but aside from that, everyone was pretty much in shock. His wife ended up suing the Company, which I don't blame her. Obviously, not all events are the same but trying to equate what happened yesterday w/ having a co-worker die in your office (not you) is apples and pineapples.

I love how reporters need to add the qualifier of, “Obviously Hamlin’s health is the primary concern, but…” when talking about the actual game to make the lifeless losers on Twitter feel better. Stop that. Now. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together assumes you’re a normal person and you hope the kid makes a full recovery. Just do your job. The Twitter mob’s memory span has a two day time limit before they move on to the next thing to be OUTRAGGGGGEEEEEEDD about.
I can't count the number of times someone on ESPN last night said "now I know it doesn't matter, the health of Hamlin is all that matters right now, but when do you think they will they make a decision on when this game is played?"

Twitter even more so.

Are you implying they should have continued the game? That's crazy. Sorry if I misunderstood.

I'm just implying that in terms of organizational process, people should do more than just sit around acting sad, there is nothing wrong with engaging in rational dialog about logistics and what ifs, a process that loops in players/coaches. If they refuse to play then of course you can't force them to, but the consequences should be logically laid out rather than just "let's all feel sad and only think about the player". That's not how decisions should be made, you need people in charge to set aside feelings and think rationally even when it is hard. There are people literally paid to do this. A lot. There are more factors at play than just feelings here. What Skip Bayliss wrote was perfectly reasonable, a tiny slice of what the decision makers were absolutely having to worry about as reasonable people.

In terms of what I think they should have done (which obviously means jack squat) I would have tried to push to play the game if I was an owner or whatever. Also, my guess is if the coaches were Belichick and Reid, they would have finished the game. OTOH, my wife thought I was crazy when I said they should be professionals, finish the game, and rally for the dude who was hurt. But she's an NBA fan where each game is meaningless.

I agree with everything here. However, I am not convinced that Belichick would have pushed to keep playing. For all of his hard exterior (with media douche bags), he seems to really love and respect the players. I think he would have done the same thing. Could be wrong, of course.

Wow that is horrible, and I agree not a fair comparison. But wow.

not just that, what if he had this same accident outside the playing field. What would be the discussion then?

Yes good point. If the players were as obviously shell-shocked as the Bills players were, he might have responded the same. McDermott is not some softy he is a great coach.

What options are available to the NFL? Forfeiting, calling it a tie, ect just seem silly.

seems like there has been internal discussion by the bills on forfeiting this game and the Pats game and getting ready for the playoffs

The problem with saying this is that it implies that we have any effect on what happens to Hamlin. The guy is already in the hospital getting care. What does it matter what us random people out in the world are discussing? Why do we need to say that "his health is what matters most" - we're not his doctors...

It's like some kind of weird dogma lol. "Only thoughts and prayers allowed! If you talk about anything besides thoughts and prayers and the health of this man you don't know, your bad behavior will somehow impact the course of fate and make his health worsen! If only Bobby McSmith in Rhode Island hadn't talked to his friends about when the game might resume, Hamlin would've made it, but thanks to Bobby the outlook is grim."

In the time it took you to think this out and type it, you could have sent three ptayers.and thought about the tragedy more.

You're an insensitive jerk!

That was sarcasm/humor. Not serious, LOL. @Ross12

Calling it a tie would be extremely silly since Cincy was leading at the time and the Bills actively decided to hop on a plane back to Buffalo. If the game is going to be canceled, it should be a forfeit for the Bills, and a loss should be added to their record.

Yeah, if the Bengals gain this win then they have the tiebreaker over Buffalo and KC, so if Vegas manages to take down KC this weekend then Cincinnati would be the #1 seed (assuming CIN beats Baltimore). I doubt they want to give that opportunity away. A tie would make them essentially stuck in the #2 seed at the absolute best.

Highly unlikely they're forfeiting the Pats game although the backdoor to the Pats there would royally screw the Dolphins and Steelers out of a shot at the playoffs and I'd have my popcorn out for that lol.
