NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 17: NFL Other Games

Good Lord, no.

This is a terrible moment, but cancelling the season? That would be quite the overreaction.
That might be true, but if something happened, I truly don't know how they could be expected to take the field even this weekend.

I am sure that the league has established protocols for major injuries. Immediate time out of X, followed up by a league decision as info becomes available. They probably even have a set protocol for a death on the field. This, though, was a different animal - having to go full-on emergency service, CPR, shock, etc., probably wasn't in the book.
Valid points. Definitely unprecedented situation..

What implications can it have? The medical staff were there immediately and did their job as best they could from the sounds of it.

Wasn't a bad hit so simply something underlying or purely bad luck resulting in such a horrific scene. Nothing needs to be made of this other than hoping the player is okay.

With all the strides the league has made to make the game safer, it has caught up to the oil/gas industry. Incredible checks/balances for safety - and they work. Except when they don't - then it is generally catastrophic.

From the Bills board

Hamlin is not breathing on his own.

I’ll be shocked if it’s anything other than being moved to tomorrow night.
Tomorrow night works. Hopefully the kid pulls through but, even if he doesn’t, they’ll have time to process what they saw tonight.

If the convo goes « football » : this game is purely seeding, correct ? Both teams are going to the playoffs. BUF will be #1. CLE can win their division by winning next week.

So the game isn’t even that impactful in terms of the season it would seem.

Maybe I’m missing something.

Currently, Buffalo is the #2 seed, but they have a chance at the #1 seed and a bye if they win both games with KC losing their Wk18. A loss this week and next week (hypothetically) would result in Buffalo being the 3rd seed.

I can't even imagine, and the reactions I read would mirror how we'd all feel. I mean, I remember how I felt finding about about Bruschi's stroke, and that was in the offseason (I think that happened in February...?), I can't even imagine seeing it happen live to anyone from the Patriots. My reaction would have been the same as their fans, the game means nothing. All that matters is the well-being of the player.
It's interesting how people react. For those of us who remember Hank Gathers and when Reggie Lewis collapsed back in 93 this is terrifying and sad.

Probably the same way normal people come back to work after a co-worker dies.
True, we had a guy that we lost while I was there and life didn't stop, nobody got a day off...had sort of put it out of my mind, but you're definitely right.

to some that might sound harsh, but that is 100% true. I highly doubt this Sunday's games will be pushed back.

I know this won't happen, but I'd cancel the season if he ends up dying. It would be in really poor taste to continue the season.
Maybe you would cancel but no way in hell the NFL will.

And it sucks that this is how we need to live in the world.

I am not sure what the proper mourning time is. But they are not shutting down the season. Nor should they.

We lost someone a few years back. My first year in a management position. I gave my people a day off and the option of taking the 3-day bereavement period. Can’t remember many people taking advantage of that, but just about everyone went home with the exception of those who needed counseling.

KC don't need to lose, Bills have the tiebreaker so simply winning their games is enough. Rest of your point stands

The problem with such a quick turnaround is that play already happened, and recovery time is already needed.
