NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 1: Other Games

Josh Simmons got the lowest Chief PFF grade for the week. Meh he looked all right with the eye test other than the penalties.

I thought he looked decent on the snaps I really paid attention.

However......is just me, or did he look like he was lining up too far off the LOS. Chiefs back to their old tricks?

I know everyone wants to celebrate the end of the Chiefs, but context is important. It was week one…

The Chiefs schedule gets harder, the Chargers schedule gets easier.

This is only year two of Harbaugh, it could only get better. The Chargers were a sht show prior to Harbaugh’s arrival and Herbert has been put through a blender.

Both offenses were rusty, it was week one. Both defenses retained more of their players and had less transition.

The offenses on both teams will improve timing and execution. At the end of the day the Chiefs schedule gets harder, their path is harder. They’ll still be a very good team if they nail down their execution and timing.

Losing Worthy was big, especially with Rice gone.
Mahomes is still so dangerous, we saw it last night. When he gets in a rhythm tough guy to stop.
So, big disruption to their game plan early last night. They will figure it out I'm sure.
Much like us for years, everyone would write us off, "this is the year they drop off".
I'm not buying it, Mahomes and Reid are too good, they'll be fine.

If only Joe Alt would’ve came out a year later.

The thing i took away from this game is even with no skill players of note in the game for KC it still came down to the last possession and they were breathing down the Chargers neck all game long. To me this showed the massive difference between a great QB like Mahomes a good one like Herbert.

That all being said, I want to be clear KC was fortunate tonight with how the football bounce. A pick 6 dropped, a bonehead play by the RB and failure from LAC as a whole to end that half properly. Mahomes made a few other questionable plays that went their way. And that absolute blown coverage on that Mahomes bomb to what's his name when he was retreating from Mack.

Yes Mahomes and KC is the best improv team in the NFL, but they paid for none of those borderline plays tonight. So that needs to be kept in mind as well.

I agree with what you wrote, but would also mention KC lost their WR1, Xavier Worthy, on the first play of the game. We should find out soon how long he'll be gone but it probably isn't the whole season. We also know Rashee Rice comes back after Game 6. Things should improve for them presuming no more serious injury/suspension issues.

Speaking about how the football bounces, indeed as you note it came down to KC's last possession. If Chris Jones does his freaking job and keeps containment instead of freelancing inside we should have seen Mahomes with the ball in his hands and two minutes on the clock down by six. Def not a KC fan and glad to see them have some setbacks, but am still expecting them in the playoffs.

Beyond that, I'm not going to form a firm opinion on them after one game. They aren't the same team as when Hill and Kelce were in their primes but we knew that already.

Not just you.

Thornton is not good enough for the NFL. And the Chiefs OL can barely let a long route develop.

Like it or not, there is evidence otherwise:

It makes sense for KC to have a WR that can stretch the field even if is build means he won't be an effective blocker on run plays or get many yards after the catch. KC is are a big-play offense whereas we're more of a balanced run/pass offense. Their OL isn't great but with Mahomes able to create with his feet and throw on the fly DLs can't tee off like they can against a more traditional QB.

If Thornton puts a few more plays like this on film he'll stick in the NFL, IMO.

yep Pat will overachieve him
Receivers can’t block for and throw to themselves. They’re literally the last person that has to perform well in any given offensive pass play in order for it to work out.

If Randy Moss can look washed up on a terrible offense in 2006… then so can any WR.

Herbert was amazing. Chargers will challenge for the division this season.
Chefs are gonna get smacked around yet again next week by the Eagles.
JV versus Varsity at this point.
Ravens could hang with the Eagles.
Not sure what other AFC team could at this point.
8 or 9 win season for Mahomes...

Agreed, he’ll replace the role vacated by Justin Watson and MVScantling before him.

He doesn’t have to become Calvin Johnson to have a long successful career. He can become a role player.

That division went from Nathaniel Hackett, Antonio Pierce, and Brandon Staley as head coaches to Sean Payton, Pete Carroll, and Jim Harbaugh. KC is going to have problems.

Agreed, it’s a tough division now.. even though Carroll will need time to flip that roster and improve it. Harbaugh and Payton have a big head start on Pete.

The zebras and commish will make sure kc wont lose another for a while

A truck could literally drive through. Literally..

Laurence Maroney had that issue but the opposite. There were many times defenses would collapse in the middle giving him the opportunity to use his speed and kick it to the outside, but he had a horrible habit of running right into where the action was.
