runningback 40s coming keep an eye for:

Joe McKnight: He'll be blazing fast.

Johnathan Dwyer: He's going to blow chunks. Bad jumps, looks out of shape.

Toby Gerhart: The mystery speed will be answered.

Ben Tate: Hear alot of people on the forum talking about him.

The announcers actually make a good point here, RBs that can pass protect well are a lot more valuable. Because you can keep them in on passing downs.

Agreed. Dwyer and Tate are like mirror opposites today. Tate looks huge and defined and jumped like 10'4" but Dwyer didn't break nine feet.

I was impressed him [Jimmy Graham], Garrett Graham, and ****erson. Gresham looked excellent at times and looked like he needed work at other times. Wish Hernandez would have worked out.

I was disappointed with Gresham's overall performance relative to the hype. I have to agree J. Graham and ****son got my attention, as did Pitta. Many solid prospects into round 3-4.

Hence why I laugh when patsfans want Darren Sproles.

Unofficial 40 times.

Joique Bell only a 4.68.
Best with a 4.39. Nice.
Blount 4.62. Not bad considering he weighs 240.

Chris brown 4.58.
Andre Dixon 4.64. That's slow for his body build.
Anthony Dixon 4.67.

Here comes Dwyer. 4.59. Not great, but it's ok for his size.
Toby Gerheart... 4.53. Hmm surprising! His legs are huge!
Hardesty. 4.49.
Jackson 4.73. FB.

Javaris James 4.53. Wow he only manages to match Gerhart at his size?
Stafon Johnson 4.66.
Darius Marshall ?

Ryan Matthews 4.41. Pretty nice. 220 lbs.
Dexter McCluster. 4.55? 172 lbs. Wow that's disappointing.
Joe McKnight. 4.49.

So far, these backs are slow.

Gerhart: 4.53. He's a runningback, not a fullback.

Toby Gerhart is FASTER than Dexter Mccluster. OWNED!!!!!!

I was expecting a lot better from McCluster...

I was expecting a time in the 4.3xs from McCluster. Did I mishear his 40 time??

Here comes Spiller!!
Holy cow, 4.28!!

And it looked to me like he could go faster with a slightly better start!!

James Stark 4.48.
Ben Tate 4.45.

Ok it's official - Spiller can FLY! And he doesn't even look like he's using great sprinting technique, he's just flat out fast.

He looked really disappointed with it as soon as he finished. I'm expecting him to run in the 4.4's the next time around...

Spiller with an unofficial 4.28...and that was with bad form...

Grades:

Best: A 4.39

Gerhart: A- 4.53 good for his size

Dwyer: A 4.49 good for his size

Mccluster: D+ 5.55 ............

Spiller: A+ 4.28 speeedy

Ben Tate: A+ 4.45 great speed for his size

Most of the combine participants attend camps to enhance their combine numbers which have little bearing on how they play the game. They should do all the drills in full pads. The NFL should not send any scouts to the various pro days. If a player doesn't want to fully participate in the combine the it's just too damn bad.

I think if Spiller had been trained in proper sprinting technique he could easily have a chance at beating Chris Johnson's record.

Ok second sprint attempts.

Best 4.33. Nice improvement.
Blount 4.69.
Conner 4.73. FB

Andre Dixon. 4.65. Not very fast, and he only weighs 205.
Anthony Dixon. 4.65 at 233 lbs.

Dwyer up. 4.69. Ouch. He did not show up in very good shape for the combine.
Gerheart. 4.58.
Hardesty. 4.58. Hmm these guys are slowing down on the 2nd run, except for Best.
James. 4.59.
Johnson. 4.71.
Marshall. 4.62.
Matthews. 4.49.

McCluster. Can he redeem himself? 4.56 is his second time. OUCH. He is slo-ow for his weight (172). Looks like the first time was accurate after all.
McKnight. 4.42. McKnight can run. He has nice athleticism. But where was the production at the college level?
McNeal. 4.47. Nearly a 1/10th improvement.
Miller. 4.49.

There's not that many typical NFL runningbacks, (Spiller and Best). The rest are going to be bruisers/power type backs.

Mccluster is a wes welker clone. Close size, not fast, 4.5s, but is quick.

I would hesitate to compare any prospect to a guy who caught 100 passes in the pros in 3 consecutive seasons. I'd wait at least until we see McCluster's 3 cone times.
Those 40 times are definitely disappointing though. And I think that will cost him some draft stock, probably knock him down a couple of rounds.
I mean when you have 230 lb guys outrunning a 170 lb guy... that's pretty BAD.

B. Tate's second 40 4.46. He's been very consistent.
