Then don't have him play the sport. This isn't rocket science. It's basic common sense.

Because typically you're playing against people roughly in the same weight class as you. Sure, some schools might have 1 or 2 abnormally large players, but not an entire roster like this school has managed to put together

Pop warner they protect the players with weight class divisions.. in Highschool it's sort of the same thing with JV and Varsity, but this Avon team is an anomaly, not the norm

There is a ton of risk in playing the sport and most parents acknowledge that and make their decision accordingly, but this team increases that level of risk by so much that it's not common sense to subject your team to it

Full grown men playing in the NFL are 300 lbs.. it would be negligent to put kids who weigh 1/3 of that against an entire roster 18 year olds that size

Hey Stacey Mcbride maybe put your son on a 200g + protein diet a day and get him into power lifting so he wouldn't be such a skinny runt. Too many kids these days come home from school, hit up the X box for hours while eating a diet consisting of easy mac, Cheetos, and soda.

And then many of those same kids go on to get engineering degrees, etc.. create companies and invent things that advance society

Not everyone wants to hit the gym every day and be a tough guy.. some people are destined for greater things than how much they can lift, etc

I spent my 20's working out 2 hours a day with a buddy who now competes in Crossfit.. I was jacked and loving it.. but by 29 or so I lost the interest and wasn't passionate about it anymore.. it takes a huge time commitment and a lifestyle to maintain that just didnt seem like an important priority anymore

Not everyone is into that stuff.. the difference tho is that when we were jacked out of our minds (my friend still is, I'm now soft/chubby and could care less), we didn't call others who didn't share that obsessive passion ****ies.. we would stick up for and defend anyone that someone was trying to target or bully

You just refuse to listen to reason here. Let's try it with bullet points and capital letters:

  1. IF YOU ARE AFRAID THAT YOUR CHILD WILL GET HURT PLAYING FOOTBALL, DON'T HAVE YOUR CHILD PLAY FOOTBALL.
  2. IF YOU ARE AFRAID THAT YOUR CHILD WILL GET HURT PLAYING FOOTBALL IN A PARTICULAR LEAGUE/CONFERENCE, DON'T HAVE YOUR CHILD PLAY FOOTBALL IN THAT PARTICULAR LEAGUE/CONFERENCE.
  3. IF THERE IS A TEAM IN YOUR LEAGUE/CONFERENCE THAT HAS SO MANY ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES THAT SAID TEAM'S EXISTENCE IN THE LEAGUE/CONFERENCE IS ONE YOU DEEM TO BE DANGEROUS, YOU HAVE OPTIONS: DON'T LET YOUR CHILD PLAY IN THAT LEAGUE/CONFERENCE, GET THAT TEAM REMOVED FROM THE LEAGUE/CONFERENCE, OR ACCEPT THE RISK
You don't pick and choose which teams in your league/conference you are willing to play against when the season is already in progress and, in this instance, when you had years of history to let you know that this was going to be a mismatch. The reality is that kids can get hurt playing football. If you're so worried about injury that you're pulling out of games, you don't belong on the field at all.

ONE DIRECTION!! Gawd I'm losing it..

I should know...I sat thru the freaking rain last fall when they came to Gillette.

Well to be fair, their fans have no direction and lack any sense of dimension. Unfortunately the D bags in the "band" know exactly what they're doing and making Brady like money for bad lip syncing and synchronized dancing.

Totally. Shes 11 and not totally corrupted yet.

Shes been exposed to Metallica and hasn't said its bad...:p

I'm curious how well the 300 lbers do when they finally compete against some kids their own size or bigger. I don't know about anyone else, but I sense some 300 lb. asses getting whipped.

I hate the wussification of our country, too. But there's character building, and then there's just plain stupid. Somewhere in the middle is the last, few remaining crumbs of common sense.

This place is just loaded with internet fake tough guys. I'll say this, it is comforting...

If someone unwittingly committed a micro-aggression against you, I'm sure they'll be happy to apologize for making you feel less than fabulous. In the meantime, perhaps you could go to a safe space and call your crisis counselor. All this talk about playing the games you signed on to play may be too much for your sensibilities.

LOL...WTF are you talking about? Nonsensical BS...now, don't start stalking me again...it's been awhile, but we all know it's like porn to you;)

I don't even like the argument of how big the other players are. Are they high schoolers? That's the only qualification to me. One team is going out of its way to recruit better players, that's the reward for the effort they put into recruiting. If you don't want to compete then kick rocks.

Again, I say this at risk of sounding like an internet tough guy but it's just one of my core values

I'm in the camp of the players are a bunch of ****ies, however it's not really a fair situation unless both schools can recruit.

What I mean is that if this private school is in a conference with a bunch of public schools who can only pull from their allotted parts of town or whatever that doesn't measure up to a school who can pull from a 50 mile radius

Great example of how our society has gone so soft. Let's just make the football field a "safe zone" that way the kids will feel "welcomed and included."

Important question: Have you ever played football?

Important question: Have you ever played football?

Not really an important question. There are tons of other sports and activities which involve risk, physical contact, violence, etc. Not everyone has to have direct experience with a sport in order to opine that this seems like a strange scenario. Is it possibly indicative of a larger societal issue? Maybe. Maybe not. But I think something valuable is lost when people aren't willing to honor a commitment, just because it may be difficult or even dangerous.

Look, I'm not going to rag on any of the parents, but if my son were on that team, and he had asked to sign up for football, I would tell him that he has to see things through. Even if it means the other team winning by 50+ points again, and him coming home with bumps and bruises, staying true to his commitment to the team is important. I want to instill in him a sense of responsibility.

I'm also curious if previous games resulted in injuries, or just injured pride.

Turns out there's a fourth option. See: the entire premise of this thread, and the original linked article.

You can claim that the parents and coaches and players don't have a right to forfeit a game, but you're simply wrong. They have that right, as proven by the fact that several teams here have chosen to exercise it. You may not agree with it, and that's fine, but clearly they don't care.

No, you don't understand.
If you're not willing to sacrifice your 14 year old son's long term health in order to satisfy some random coach-from-three-towns-over's ego, you're clearly a ****y and so is your kid.

/sarcasm, in case that wasn't clear.

IMO, the moment this private school felt the need to recruit a superteam to compete against a bunch of 120 pound 14 year olds, the whole spirit of competition and character building or whatever went out the window. What lesson is said 14 year old supposed to learn from going out there and getting his brain scrambled by someone who outweighs him by 100+ pounds? That when someone higher up the totem pole rigs the game against you, you aren't allowed to do or say anything about it? That your job is to be a good worker ant and throw yourself into the fire for no plausible personal gain, so that someone else can get their ego properly stroked? That high school football is more important than the rest of your life?

Youth sports are generally good. They generally instill discipline and build character. I doubt anyone here would deny that. But to act like there's no scenario where that stops being true is just an exercise in ignorance for simplicity's sake. And as usual, the assholes here are the adults. Specifically, everyone involved in the private school's football program, who felt the need to assemble a Dream Team to physically dominate a bunch of 15 year old public school kids in Nowheresville, USA, in the most dangerous sport that we allow to be played at that level. If we're looking to pinpoint the moment that someone's ego/feelings/insecurity trampled all over the concept of hard work, competitiveness, and building character in young men, it's ridiculous to look to a bunch of rightly concerned parents. Instead, we can find it in the coach and AD of the private school's football program.

I think its an important question if someone has a bravado type attitude towards this and suggests that the weakening of america is occurring because these kids didn't play against that team. I think to have such a stance, you'd need to have actually played the game to personally see what its about to have credibility

Uhh... what? This wasn't actually a serious reply to my post, was it?

The first paragraph was sarcasm. The rest is elaborating on why I agree with you.

Let's chill with calling them ****ies. I agree the mindset of this world has changed, but aren't these teenagers? You can't expect kids to have the passion NFL players do and you can't expect their parents to let them get potentially killed out there. This isn't professional football and most of these kids likely won't apply for the NFL anyway.

Yeah, not buying the recruiting thing.

My daughter goes to Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh NC. And some of the schools in the area tried pulling the same stunt, and I can say with no hesitation that Cardinal Gibbons DOES NOT recruit athletes.

1. If you are getting financial assistance from the school you are NOT eligible to participate in athletics.

2. If you transfer from another school, you are NOT eligible to participate in athletics for 365 days.

The second rule is Wake county wide, however the public schools in the area request waivers which are approved at somewhere around 98%.

Cardinal Gibbons does not request waivers. Specifically for that reason of not being accused of "recruiting" players. It's unfortunate too cause I know a young man who just transferred over from another school who is a baseball phenom and will have to sit out his entire sophomore year. Had he transferred to any of the public schools in wake county they would have requested a waiver and he would be playing this year.

The other schools where using all the same arguments I read in this article.
